Theoretical Interpretations and Applications of Radial Basis Function Networks

    Get PDF
Medical applications usually used Radial Basis Function Networks just as Artificial Neural Networks. However, RBFNs are Knowledge-Based Networks that can be interpreted in several way: Artificial Neural Networks, Regularization Networks, Support Vector Machines, Wavelet Networks, Fuzzy Controllers, Kernel Estimators, Instanced-Based Learners. A survey of their interpretations and of their corresponding learning algorithms is provided as well as a brief survey on dynamic learning algorithms. RBFNs' interpretations can suggest applications that are particularly interesting in medical domains

Automated detection of breast cancer using SAXS data and wavelet features

The overarching goal of this project was to improve breast cancer screening protocols first by collecting small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) images from breast biopsy tissue, and second, by applying pattern recognition techniques as a semi-automatic screen. Wavelet based features were generated from the SAXS image data. The features were supplied to a classifier, which sorted the images into distinct groups, such as “normal” and “tumor”. The main problem in the project was to find a set of features that provided sufficient separation for classification into groups of “normal” and “tumor.” In the original SAXS patterns, information useful for classification was obscured. The wavelet maps allowed new scale-based information to be uncovered from each SAXS pattern. The new information was subsequently used to define features that allowed for classification. Several calculations were tested to extract useful features from the wavelet decomposition maps. The wavelet map average intensity feature was selected as the most promising feature. The wavelet map intensity feature was improved by using pre-processing to remove the high central intensities from the SAXS patterns, and by using different wavelet bases for the wavelet decomposition. The investigation undertaken for this project showed very promising results. A classification rate of 100% was achieved for distinguishing between normal samples and tumor samples. The system also showed promising results when tested on unrelated MRI data. In the future, the semi-automatic pattern recognition tool developed for this project could be automated. With a larger set of data for training and testing, the tool could be improved upon and used to assist radiologists in the detection and classification of breast lesions

Heart disease is one of the trivial issues regarding health problem over the last few decades in India. Numerous methods have been developed with still-ongoing modifications and ideas to observe and evaluate ECG signals based on each heart beat. Majority of research revolves around arrhythmia classification, heart rate monitoring and blood pressure measurements that require highly accurate assessments of rhythm disorders which can be possible by measuring QRS complex of ECG signal, so accurate QRS detection methods are very important to be utilized. There have been proposed many approaches to find out the R peak detection to analyze the ECG signals in past few years. Most recent and efficient techniques of R peak detection have been reviewed in this paper. Techniques which have been reviewed in this paper are Pan and Tompkins, Wavelet Transform, Empirical Mode Decomposition, Hilbert-Huang Transform, Fuzzy logic systems, Artificial neural networks

A comprehensive study on disease risk predictions in machine learning

    Get PDF
Over recent years, multiple disease risk prediction models have been developed. These models use various patient characteristics to estimate the probability of outcomes over a certain period of time and hold the potential to improve decision making and individualize care. Discovering hidden patterns and interactions from medical databases with growing evaluation of the disease prediction model has become crucial. It needs many trials in traditional clinical findings that could complicate disease prediction. Comprehensive survey on different strategies used to predict disease is conferred in this paper. Applying these techniques to healthcare data, has improvement of risk prediction models to find out the patients who would get benefit from disease management programs to reduce hospital readmission and healthcare cost, but the results of these endeavours have been shifted

Novel hybrid extraction systems for fetal heart rate variability monitoring based on non-invasive fetal electrocardiogram

This study focuses on the design, implementation and subsequent verification of a new type of hybrid extraction system for noninvasive fetal electrocardiogram (NI-fECG) processing. The system designed combines the advantages of individual adaptive and non-adaptive algorithms. The pilot study reviews two innovative hybrid systems called ICA-ANFIS-WT and ICA-RLS-WT. This is a combination of independent component analysis (ICA), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) algorithm or recursive least squares (RLS) algorithm and wavelet transform (WT) algorithm. The study was conducted on clinical practice data (extended ADFECGDB database and Physionet Challenge 2013 database) from the perspective of non-invasive fetal heart rate variability monitoring based on the determination of the overall probability of correct detection (ACC), sensitivity (SE), positive predictive value (PPV) and harmonic mean between SE and PPV (F1). System functionality was verified against a relevant reference obtained by an invasive way using a scalp electrode (ADFECGDB database), or relevant reference obtained by annotations (Physionet Challenge 2013 database). The study showed that ICA-RLS-WT hybrid system achieve better results than ICA-ANFIS-WT. During experiment on ADFECGDB database, the ICA-RLS-WT hybrid system reached ACC > 80 % on 9 recordings out of 12 and the ICA-ANFIS-WT hybrid system reached ACC > 80 % only on 6 recordings out of 12. During experiment on Physionet Challenge 2013 database the ICA-RLS-WT hybrid system reached ACC > 80 % on 13 recordings out of 25 and the ICA-ANFIS-WT hybrid system reached ACC > 80 % only on 7 recordings out of 25. Both hybrid systems achieve provably better results than the individual algorithms tested in previous studies.Web of Science713178413175

A texture segmentation prototype for industrial inspection applications based on fuzzy grammar

    Get PDF
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose a set of techniques, in the domain of texture analysis, dedicated to the classification of industrial textures. One of the main purposes was to deal with a high diversity of textures, including structural and highly random patterns. Design/methodology/approach – The global system includes a texture segmentation phase and a classification phase. The approach for image texture segmentation is based on features extracted from wavelets transform, fuzzy spectrum and interaction maps. The classification architecture uses a fuzzy grammar inference system. Findings – The classifier uses the aggregation of features from the several segmentation techniques, resulting in high flexibility concerning the diversity of industrial textures. The resulted system allows on-line learning of new textures. This approach avoids the need for a global re-learning of the all textures each time a new texture is presented to the system. Practical implications – These achievements demonstrate the practical value of the system, as it can be applied to different industrial sectors for quality control operations. Originality/value – The global approach was integrated in a cork vision system, leading to an industrial prototype that has already been tested. Similarly, it was tested in a textile machine, for a specific fabric inspection, and gave results that corroborate the diversity of possible applications. The segmentation procedure reveals good performance that is indicated by high classification rates, revealing good perspectives for full industrialization
