The SDSS-IV extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey: selecting emission line galaxies using the Fisher discriminant
We present a new selection technique of producing spectroscopic target
catalogues for massive spectroscopic surveys for cosmology. This work was
conducted in the context of the extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic
Survey (eBOSS), which will use ~200 000 emission line galaxies (ELGs) at
0.6<zspec<1.0 to obtain a precise baryon acoustic oscillation measurement. Our
proposed selection technique is based on optical and near-infrared broad-band
filter photometry. We used a training sample to define a quantity, the Fisher
discriminant (linear combination of colours), which correlates best with the
desired properties of the target: redshift and [OII] flux. The proposed
selections are simply done by applying a cut on magnitudes and this Fisher
discriminant. We used public data and dedicated SDSS spectroscopy to quantify
the redshift distribution and [OII] flux of our ELG target selections. We
demonstrate that two of our selections fulfil the initial eBOSS/ELG redshift
requirements: for a target density of 180 deg^2, ~70% of the selected objects
have 0.6<zspec<1.0 and only ~1% of those galaxies in the range 0.6<zspec<1.0
are expected to have a catastrophic zspec estimate. Additionally, the stacked
spectra and stacked deep images for those two selections show characteristic
features of star-forming galaxies. The proposed approach using the Fisher
discriminant could, however, be used to efficiently select other galaxy
populations, based on multi-band photometry, providing that spectroscopic
information is available. This technique could thus be useful for other future

Extreme Value Distribution Based Gene Selection Criteria for Discriminant Microarray Data Analysis Using Logistic Regression
One important issue commonly encountered in the analysis of microarray data
is to decide which and how many genes should be selected for further studies.
For discriminant microarray data analyses based on statistical models, such as
the logistic regression models, gene selection can be accomplished by a
comparison of the maximum likelihood of the model given the real data,
, and the expected maximum likelihood of the model given an
ensemble of surrogate data with randomly permuted label, .
Typically, the computational burden for obtaining is immense,
often exceeding the limits of computing available resources by orders of
magnitude. Here, we propose an approach that circumvents such heavy
computations by mapping the simulation problem to an extreme-value problem. We
present the derivation of an asymptotic distribution of the extreme-value as
well as its mean, median, and variance. Using this distribution, we propose two
gene selection criteria, and we apply them to two microarray datasets and three

Down and out or up and in? Polarization-based measures of the middle class for Latin America
This document presents a systematic review of empirical approaches to the identification and measurement of the middle class as the concept is used in the applied literature. It then presents an arguably less arbitrary definition of the middle class which is based on sound principles of distributional analysis and derived from income polarization measures. The document illustrates the differences between the existing approaches and the proposed methodology with a comparative analysis of the extent and evolution of the middle classes since the early 1990s in six Latin American countries. Logopenic and nonfluent variants of primary progressive aphasia are differentiated by acoustic measures of speech production
Differentiation of logopenic (lvPPA) and nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) variants of Primary Progressive Aphasia is important yet remains challenging since it hinges on expert based evaluation of speech and language production. In this study acoustic measures of speech in conjunction with voxel-based morphometry were used to determine the success of the measures as an adjunct to diagnosis and to explore the neural basis of apraxia of speech in nfvPPA. Forty-one patients (21 lvPPA, 20 nfvPPA) were recruited from a consecutive sample with suspected frontotemporal dementia. Patients were diagnosed using the current gold-standard of expert perceptual judgment, based on presence/absence of particular speech features during speaking tasks. Seventeen healthy age-matched adults served as controls. MRI scans were available for 11 control and 37 PPA cases; 23 of the PPA cases underwent amyloid ligand PET imaging. Measures, corresponding to perceptual features of apraxia of speech, were periods of silence during reading and relative vowel duration and intensity in polysyllable word repetition. Discriminant function analyses revealed that a measure of relative vowel duration differentiated nfvPPA cases from both control and lvPPA cases (r2 = 0.47) with 88% agreement with expert judgment of presence of apraxia of speech in nfvPPA cases. VBM analysis showed that relative vowel duration covaried with grey matter intensity in areas critical for speech motor planning and programming: precentral gyrus, supplementary motor area and inferior frontal gyrus bilaterally, only affected in the nfvPPA group. This bilateral involvement of frontal speech networks in nfvPPA potentially affects access to compensatory mechanisms involving right hemisphere homologues. Measures of silences during reading also discriminated the PPA and control groups, but did not increase predictive accuracy. Findings suggest that a measure of relative vowel duration from of a polysyllable word repetition task may be sufficient for detecting most cases of apraxia of speech and distinguishing between nfvPPA and lvPPA
What does touch tell us about emotions in touchscreen-based gameplay?

This phenomenon raises a very interesting question: does touch behaviour reflect the playerâs emotional state? If possible, this would not only be a valuable evaluation indicator for game designers, but also for real-time personalization of the game experience. Psychology studies on acted touch behaviour show the existence of discriminative affective profiles. In this paper, finger-stroke features during gameplay on an iPod were extracted and their discriminative power analysed. Based on touch-behaviour, machine learning algorithms were used to build systems for automatically discriminating between four emotional states (Excited, Relaxed, Frustrated, Bored), two levels of arousal and two levels of valence. The results were very interesting reaching between 69% and 77% of correct discrimination between the four emotional states. Higher results (~89%) were obtained for discriminating between two levels of arousal and two levels of valence
The Validity, Reliability, Measurement Error, and Minimum Detectable Change of the 30âSecond FastâPaced Walk Test in Persons with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Novel Test of ShortâDistance Walking Ability
Objective
To develop and establish the reliability, validity, measurement error, and minimum detectable change of a novel 30âsecond fastâpaced walk test (30SFW) in persons with knee osteoarthritis (OA) that is easy to administer and can quantify walking performance in persons of all abilities.
Methods
Twenty females with symptomatic knee OA (mean age [SD] 58.30 [8.05] years) and 20 ageâ and sexâmatched asymptomatic controls (57.25 [8.71] years) participated in the study. Participants completed questionnaires of demographic and clinical data, the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS), and the 36âitem Short Form Health Survey (SFâ36) followed by 30SFW performance. Participants returned 2â7 days later and performed the 30SFW again.
Results
The knee OA group reported function that was worse than controls (all KOOS subscales; P \u3c 0.0001). The 30SFW intrarater and interrater reliability were excellent [ICC(2,1) = 0.95â0.99]. Knee OA participants walked a shorter distance in the 30SFW than controls (mean [SD]: OA 44.4 m [9.5 m]; control 58.1 m [7.8 m]; P \u3c 0.0001). Positive strong correlations were found between the 30SFW and the KOOSâActivity of Daily Living, SFâ36âPhysical Functioning, and SFâ36âPhysical Health Composite scores (P \u3c 0.0001). A nonsignificant, weak correlation between 30SFW and SFâ36âMental Health scores was present (r = 0.32, P = 0.05).
Conclusion
The 30SFW has excellent intrarater and interrater reliability. The 30SFW demonstrated excellent known groups, convergent, and discriminant validity as a measure of shortâdistance walking ability in persons with knee OA. Clinicians and researchers should consider using the 30SFW to quantify walking ability in persons with knee OA and assess walking ability change
