    The design and implementation of a multimedia storage server tosupport video-on-demand applications

    In this paper we present the design and implementation of a client/server based multimedia architecture for supporting video-on-demand applications. We describe in detail the software architecture of the implementation along with the adopted buffering mechanism. The proposed multithreaded architecture obtains, on one hand, a high degree of parallelism at the server side, allowing both the disk controller and the network card controller work in parallel. On the other hand; at the client side, it achieves the synchronized playback of the video stream at its precise rate, decoupling this process from the reception of data through the network. Additionally, we have derived, under an engineering perspective, some services that a real-time operating system should offer to satisfy the requirements found in video-on-demand applications.This research has been supported by the Regional Research Plan of the Autonomus Community of Madrid under an F.P.I. research grant.Publicad

    The Design of a System Architecture for Mobile Multimedia Computers

    This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks.     Delivering Live Multimedia Streams to Mobile Hosts in a Wireless Internet with Multiple Content Aggregators

    We consider the distribution of channels of live multimedia content (e.g., radio or TV broadcasts) via multiple content aggregators. In our work, an aggregator receives channels from content sources and redistributes them to a potentially large number of mobile hosts. Each aggregator can offer a channel in various configurations to cater for different wireless links, mobile hosts, and user preferences. As a result, a mobile host can generally choose from different configurations of the same channel offered by multiple alternative aggregators, which may be available through different interfaces (e.g., in a hotspot). A mobile host may need to handoff to another aggregator once it receives a channel. To prevent service disruption, a mobile host may for instance need to handoff to another aggregator when it leaves the subnets that make up its current aggregator�s service area (e.g., a hotspot or a cellular network).\ud In this paper, we present the design of a system that enables (multi-homed) mobile hosts to seamlessly handoff from one aggregator to another so that they can continue to receive a channel wherever they go. We concentrate on handoffs between aggregators as a result of a mobile host crossing a subnet boundary. As part of the system, we discuss a lightweight application-level protocol that enables mobile hosts to select the aggregator that provides the �best� configuration of a channel. The protocol comes into play when a mobile host begins to receive a channel and when it crosses a subnet boundary while receiving the channel. We show how our protocol can be implemented using the standard IETF session control and description protocols SIP and SDP. The implementation combines SIP and SDP�s offer-answer model in a novel way

Responden kajian ini terdiri daripada 20 orang guru dan 50 orang peiajar di Sekoiah Menengah Teknik Batu Pahat yang dipilih secara rawak. Untuk kajian ini instrumen yang digunakan ialah jenis soal selidik di mana penilaian dilakukan berdasarkan kepada persepsi responden terhadap Modul Pembeiajaran Kendiri Pendidikan Alam Sekitar. Data-data yang dikumpulkan dianalisis 7?ie;!ggHHa/raH &af!'sf;ca/ Packages For socz'a/ & f e / : c e j (SP-S^ i^er^zoH 77.0 yang melibatkan skor min, peratus dan ujian t. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan kesesuaian isi kandungan modul (skor min= 3.19), kesesuaian aktiviti (skor min = 3.18), tahap keboiehiaksanaan (skor min = 3.17) dan ciri-ciri mesra pengguna (skor min = 3.20) adaiah pada tahap yang tinggi. Dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan tidak terdapat perbezaan yang signifikan di antara guru dan peiajar terdapat kesesuaian isi kandungan, kesesuaian aktiviti, keboiehiaksanaan dan ciri-ciri mesra pengguna. Oleh itu, hasil kajian menunjukkan Modul Pembeiajaran Kendiri Pendidikan Alam Sekitar ini dapat membantu pensyarah dan peiajar daiam proses pengajaran dan pembeiajaran

    Ethernet - a survey on its fields of application

    During the last decades, Ethernet progressively became the most widely used local area networking (LAN) technology. Apart from LAN installations, Ethernet became also attractive for many other fields of application, ranging from industry to avionics, telecommunication, and multimedia. The expanded application of this technology is mainly due to its significant assets like reduced cost, backward-compatibility, flexibility, and expandability. However, this new trend raises some problems concerning the services of the protocol and the requirements for each application. Therefore, specific adaptations prove essential to integrate this communication technology in each field of application. Our primary objective is to show how Ethernet has been enhanced to comply with the specific requirements of several application fields, particularly in transport, embedded and multimedia contexts. The paper first describes the common Ethernet LAN technology and highlights its main features. It reviews the most important specific Ethernet versions with respect to each application field’s requirements. Finally, we compare these different fields of application and we particularly focus on the fundamental concepts and the quality of service capabilities of each proposal

    Operating systems have grown in size and functionality. Today's many flavours of Unix provide a multi-user environment with protection, address spaces, and attempts to allocate resources fairly to users competing for them, They provide processes and threads, mechanisms for synchronization and memory sharing, blocking and nonblocking system calls, and a complex file system. Since it was first introduced, Unix has grown more then a factor twenty in size. Several operating systems now consist of a microkernel, surrounded by user-space services [Accetta et al., 1986; Mullender et al., 1990; Rozier et al., 1988]. Together they provide the functionality of the operating system. This operating system structure provides an opportunity to make operating systems even larger. The trend for operating systems to grow more and more baroque was signalled more than a decade ago [Feldman, 1980], but has continued unabated until, today, we have OSF/1, the most baroque Unix system ever. And we have Windows/NT as a demonstration that MS-DOS also needed to be replaced by something much bigger and a little better.\ud In this position paper, I am asking what community we serve with our operating systems research. Should we continue doing this, or can we make ourselves more useful to society and industry by using our experience in operating systems in new environments.\ud I argue that there is very little need for bigger and better operating systems; that, in fact, most cPus will never run an operating system at all; and that our experience in operating systems will be better applied to designing new generations of distributed and ubiquitous applications

    An autonomic delivery framework for HTTP adaptive streaming in multicast-enabled multimedia access networks

    The consumption of multimedia services over HTTP-based delivery mechanisms has recently gained popularity due to their increased flexibility and reliability. Traditional broadcast TV channels are now offered over the Internet, in order to support Live TV for a broad range of consumer devices. Moreover, service providers can greatly benefit from offering external live content (e. g., YouTube, Hulu) in a managed way. Recently, HTTP Adaptive Streaming (HAS) techniques have been proposed in which video clients dynamically adapt their requested video quality level based on the current network and device state. Unlike linear TV, traditional HTTP- and HAS-based video streaming services depend on unicast sessions, leading to a network traffic load proportional to the number of multimedia consumers. In this paper we propose a novel HAS-based video delivery architecture, which features intelligent multicasting and caching in order to decrease the required bandwidth considerably in a Live TV scenario. Furthermore we discuss the autonomic selection of multicasted content to support Video on Demand (VoD) sessions. Experiments were conducted on a large scale and realistic emulation environment and compared with a traditional HAS-based media delivery setup using only unicast connections

    Analysis and implementation of the Large Scale Video-on-Demand System

    Next Generation Network (NGN) provides multimedia services over broadband based networks, which supports high definition TV (HDTV), and DVD quality video-on-demand content. The video services are thus seen as merging mainly three areas such as computing, communication, and broadcasting. It has numerous advantages and more exploration for the large-scale deployment of video-on-demand system is still needed. This is due to its economic and design constraints. It's need significant initial investments for full service provision. This paper presents different estimation for the different topologies and it require efficient planning for a VOD system network. The methodology investigates the network bandwidth requirements of a VOD system based on centralized servers, and distributed local proxies. Network traffic models are developed to evaluate the VOD system's operational bandwidth requirements for these two network architectures. This paper present an efficient estimation of the of the bandwidth requirement for the different architectures.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figure
