    Dopaminergic Regulation of Neuronal Circuits in Prefrontal Cortex

    Neuromodulators, like dopamine, have considerable influence on the\ud processing capabilities of neural networks. \ud This has for instance been shown in the working memory functions\ud of prefrontal cortex, which may be regulated by altering the\ud dopamine level. Experimental work provides evidence on the biochemical\ud and electrophysiological actions of dopamine receptors, but there are few \ud theories concerning their significance for computational properties \ud (ServanPrintzCohen90,Hasselmo94).\ud We point to experimental data on neuromodulatory regulation of \ud temporal properties of excitatory neurons and depolarization of inhibitory \ud neurons, and suggest computational models employing these effects.\ud Changes in membrane potential may be modelled by the firing threshold,\ud and temporal properties by a parameterization of neuronal responsiveness \ud according to the preceding spike interval.\ud We apply these concepts to two examples using spiking neural networks.\ud In the first case, there is a change in the input synchronization of\ud neuronal groups, which leads to\ud changes in the formation of synchronized neuronal ensembles.\ud In the second case, the threshold\ud of interneurons influences lateral inhibition, and the switch from a \ud winner-take-all network to a parallel feedforward mode of processing.\ud Both concepts are interesting for the modeling of cognitive functions and may\ud have explanatory power for behavioral changes associated with dopamine \ud regulation

    Solving constraint-satisfaction problems with distributed neocortical-like neuronal networks

    Finding actions that satisfy the constraints imposed by both external inputs and internal representations is central to decision making. We demonstrate that some important classes of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) can be solved by networks composed of homogeneous cooperative-competitive modules that have connectivity similar to motifs observed in the superficial layers of neocortex. The winner-take-all modules are sparsely coupled by programming neurons that embed the constraints onto the otherwise homogeneous modular computational substrate. We show rules that embed any instance of the CSPs planar four-color graph coloring, maximum independent set, and Sudoku on this substrate, and provide mathematical proofs that guarantee these graph coloring problems will convergence to a solution. The network is composed of non-saturating linear threshold neurons. Their lack of right saturation allows the overall network to explore the problem space driven through the unstable dynamics generated by recurrent excitation. The direction of exploration is steered by the constraint neurons. While many problems can be solved using only linear inhibitory constraints, network performance on hard problems benefits significantly when these negative constraints are implemented by non-linear multiplicative inhibition. Overall, our results demonstrate the importance of instability rather than stability in network computation, and also offer insight into the computational role of dual inhibitory mechanisms in neural circuits.Comment: Accepted manuscript, in press, Neural Computation (2018

    Competition through selective inhibitory synchrony

    Models of cortical neuronal circuits commonly depend on inhibitory feedback to control gain, provide signal normalization, and to selectively amplify signals using winner-take-all (WTA) dynamics. Such models generally assume that excitatory and inhibitory neurons are able to interact easily, because their axons and dendrites are co-localized in the same small volume. However, quantitative neuroanatomical studies of the dimensions of axonal and dendritic trees of neurons in the neocortex show that this co-localization assumption is not valid. In this paper we describe a simple modification to the WTA circuit design that permits the effects of distributed inhibitory neurons to be coupled through synchronization, and so allows a single WTA to be distributed widely in cortical space, well beyond the arborization of any single inhibitory neuron, and even across different cortical areas. We prove by non-linear contraction analysis, and demonstrate by simulation that distributed WTA sub-systems combined by such inhibitory synchrony are inherently stable. We show analytically that synchronization is substantially faster than winner selection.     Artificial Cognitive Systems: From VLSI Networks of Spiking Neurons to Neuromorphic Cognition

    Neuromorphic engineering (NE) is an emerging research field that has been attempting to identify neural types of computational principles, by implementing biophysically realistic models of neural systems in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) technology. Remarkable progress has been made recently, and complex artificial neural sensory-motor systems can be built using this technology. Today, however, NE stands before a large conceptual challenge that must be met before there will be significant progress toward an age of genuinely intelligent neuromorphic machines. The challenge is to bridge the gap from reactive systems to ones that are cognitive in quality. In this paper, we describe recent advancements in NE, and present examples of neuromorphic circuits that can be used as tools to address this challenge. Specifically, we show how VLSI networks of spiking neurons with spike-based plasticity mechanisms and soft winner-take-all architectures represent important building blocks useful for implementing artificial neural systems able to exhibit basic cognitive abilitie

    Neuronal rhythms are ubiquitous features of brain dynamics, and are highly correlated with cognitive processing. However, the relationship between the physiological mechanisms producing these rhythms and the functions associated with the rhythms remains mysterious. This article investigates the contributions of rhythms to basic cognitive computations (such as filtering signals by coherence and/or frequency) and to major cognitive functions (such as attention and multi-modal coordination).     Transformation of context-dependent sensory dynamics into motor behavior

In this paper we use conductance based models and electrophysiological recordings to address the study of the dual role of a sensory network to organize two behavioral context-dependent motor programs in the mollusk Clione limacina. We show that: (i) a winner take-all dynamics in the gravimetric sensory network model drives the typical repetitive rhythm in the wing central pattern generator (CPG) during routine swimming; (ii) the winnerless competition dynamics of the same sensory network organizes the irregular pattern observed in the wing CPG during hunting behavior. Our model also shows that although the timing of the activity is irregular, the sequence of the switching among the sensory cells is preserved whenever the same set of neurons are activated in a given time window. These activation phase locks in the sensory signals are transformed into specific events in the motor activity.     Dynamical principles in neuroscience

    Dynamical modeling of neural systems and brain functions has a history of success over the last half century. This includes, for example, the explanation and prediction of some features of neural rhythmic behaviors. Many interesting dynamical models of learning and memory based on physiological experiments have been suggested over the last two decades. Dynamical models even of consciousness now exist. Usually these models and results are based on traditional approaches and paradigms of nonlinear dynamics including dynamical chaos. Neural systems are, however, an unusual subject for nonlinear dynamics for several reasons: (i) Even the simplest neural network, with only a few neurons and synaptic connections, has an enormous number of variables and control parameters. These make neural systems adaptive and flexible, and are critical to their biological function. (ii) In contrast to traditional physical systems described by well-known basic principles, first principles governing the dynamics of neural systems are unknown. (iii) Many different neural systems exhibit similar dynamics despite having different architectures and different levels of complexity. (iv) The network architecture and connection strengths are usually not known in detail and therefore the dynamical analysis must, in some sense, be probabilistic. (v) Since nervous systems are able to organize behavior based on sensory inputs, the dynamical modeling of these systems has to explain the transformation of temporal information into combinatorial or combinatorial-temporal codes, and vice versa, for memory and recognition.     Thalamo-cortical spiking model of incremental learning combining perception, context and NREM-sleep

    The brain exhibits capabilities of fast incremental learning from few noisy examples, as well as the ability to associate similar memories in autonomously-created categories and to combine contextual hints with sensory perceptions. Together with sleep, these mechanisms are thought to be key components of many high-level cognitive functions. Yet, little is known about the underlying processes and the specific roles of different brain states. In this work, we exploited the combination of context and perception in a thalamo-cortical model based on a soft winner-take-all circuit of excitatory and inhibitory spiking neurons. After calibrating this model to express awake and deep-sleep states with features comparable with biological measures, we demonstrate the model capability of fast incremental learning from few examples, its resilience when proposed with noisy perceptions and contextual signals, and an improvement in visual classification after sleep due to induced synaptic homeostasis and association of similar memories

    Information processing in a midbrain visual pathway

    Visual information is processed in brain via the intricate interactions between neurons. We investigated a midbrain visual pathway: optic tectum and its isthmic nucleus) that is motion sensitive and is thought as part of attentional system. We determined the physiological properties of individual neurons as well as their synaptic connections with intracellular recordings. We reproduced the center-surround receptive field structure of tectal neurons in a dynamical recurrent feedback loop. We reveal in a computational model that the anti-topographic inhibitory feedback could mediate competitive stimulus selection in a complex visual scene. We also investigated the dynamics of the competitive selection in a rate model. The isthmotectal feedback loop gates the information transfer from tectum to thalamic rotundus. We discussed the role of a localized feedback projection in contributing to the gating mechanisms with both experimental and numerical approaches. We further discussed the dynamics of the isthmotectal system by considering the propagation delays between different components. We conclude that the isthmotectal system is involved in attention-like competitive stimulus selection and control the information coding in the motion sensitive SGC-I neurons by modulating the retino-tectal synaptic transmission

    Synthesizing cognition in neuromorphic electronic systems

    The quest to implement intelligent processing in electronic neuromorphic systems lacks methods for achieving reliable behavioral dynamics on substrates of inherently imprecise and noisy neurons. Here we report a solution to this problem that involves first mapping an unreliable hardware layer of spiking silicon neurons into an abstract computational layer composed of generic reliable subnetworks of model neurons and then composing the target behavioral dynamics as a “soft state machine” running on these reliable subnets. In the first step, the neural networks of the abstract layer are realized on the hardware substrate by mapping the neuron circuit bias voltages to the model parameters. This mapping is obtained by an automatic method in which the electronic circuit biases are calibrated against the model parameters by a series of population activity measurements. The abstract computational layer is formed by configuring neural networks as generic soft winner-take-all subnetworks that provide reliable processing by virtue of their active gain, signal restoration, and multistability. The necessary states and transitions of the desired high-level behavior are then easily embedded in the computational layer by introducing only sparse connections between some neurons of the various subnets. We demonstrate this synthesis method for a neuromorphic sensory agent that performs real-time context-dependent classification of motion patterns observed by a silicon retina
