    State-space model identification and feedback control of unsteady aerodynamic forces

    Unsteady aerodynamic models are necessary to accurately simulate forces and develop feedback controllers for wings in agile motion; however, these models are often high dimensional or incompatible with modern control techniques. Recently, reduced-order unsteady aerodynamic models have been developed for a pitching and plunging airfoil by linearizing the discretized Navier-Stokes equation with lift-force output. In this work, we extend these reduced-order models to include multiple inputs (pitch, plunge, and surge) and explicit parameterization by the pitch-axis location, inspired by Theodorsen's model. Next, we investigate the na\"{\i}ve application of system identification techniques to input--output data and the resulting pitfalls, such as unstable or inaccurate models. Finally, robust feedback controllers are constructed based on these low-dimensional state-space models for simulations of a rigid flat plate at Reynolds number 100. Various controllers are implemented for models linearized at base angles of attack α0=0,α0=10\alpha_0=0^\circ, \alpha_0=10^\circ, and α0=20\alpha_0=20^\circ. The resulting control laws are able to track an aggressive reference lift trajectory while attenuating sensor noise and compensating for strong nonlinearities.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure

    A numerical study of fin and jet propulsions involving fluid-structure interactions

    Fish swimming is elegant and efficient, which inspires humans to learn from them to design high-performance artificial underwater vehicles. Research on aquatic locomotion has made extensive progress towards a better understanding of how aquatic animals control their flexible body and fin for propulsion. Although the structural flexibility and deformation of the body and fin are believed to be important features to achieve optimal swimming performance, studies on high-fidelity deformable body and fin with complex material behavior, such as non-uniform stiffness distributions, are rare. In this thesis, a fully coupled three-dimensional high-fidelity fluid-structure interaction (FSI) solver is developed to investigate the flow field evolution and propulsion performance of caudal fin and jet propulsion involving body and/or fin deformation. Within this FSI solver, the fluid is resolved by solving unsteady and viscous Navier-Stokes equations based on the finite volume method with a multi-block grid system. The solid dynamics are solved by a nonlinear finite element method. The coupling between the two solvers is achieved in a partitioned approach in which convergence check and sub-iteration are implemented to ensure numerical stability and accuracy. Validations are conducted by comparing the simulation results of classical benchmarks with previous data in the literature, and good agreements between them are obtained. The developed FSI solver is then applied to study the bio-inspired fin and jet propulsion involving body deformation. Specifically, the effect of non-uniform stiffness distributions of fish body and/or fin, key features of fish swimming which have been excluded in most previous studies, on the propulsive performance is first investigated. Simulation results of a sunfish-like caudal fin model and a tuna-inspired swimmer model both show that larger thrust and propulsion efficiency can be achieved by a non-uniform stiffness distribution (e.g., increased by 11.2% and 9.9%, respectively, for the sunfish-like model) compared with a uniform stiffness profile. Despite the improved propulsive e performance, a bionic variable fish body stiffness does not yield fish-like midline kinematics observed in real fish, suggesting that fish movement involves significant active control that cannot be replicated purely by passive deformations. Subsequent studies focus on the jet propulsion inspired by squid locomotion using the developed numerical solver. Simulation results of a two-dimensional inflation-deflation jet propulsion system, whose inflation is actuated by an added external force that mimics the muscle constriction of the mantle and deflation is caused by the release of elastic energy of the structure, suggest larger mean thrust production and higher efficiency in high Reynolds number scenarios compared with the cases in laminar flow. A unique symmetry-breaking instability in turbulent flow is found to stem from irregular internal body vortices, which cause symmetry breaking in the wake. Besides, a three-dimensional squid-like jet propulsion system in the presence of background flow is studied by prescribing the body deformation and jet velocity profiles. The effect of the background flow on the leading vortex ring formation and jet propulsion is investigated, and the thrust sources of the overall pulsed jet are revealed as well. Finally, FSI analysis on motion control of a self-propelled flexible swimmer in front of a cylinder utilizing proportional-derivative (PD) control is conducted. The amplitude of the actuation force, which is applied to the swimmer to bend it to produce thrust, is dynamically tuned by a feedback PD controller to instruct the swimmer to swim the desired distance from an initial position to a target location and then hold the station there.     Optimized kinematics enable both aerial and aquatic propulsion from a single three-dimensional flapping wing

    Flapping wings in nature demonstrate a large force envelope, with capabilities far beyond the traditional limits of static airfoil section coefficients. Puffins, murres, and other auks particularly showcase this effect, as they are able to generate both enough thrust to swim and enough lift to fly, using the same wing, purely by changing the wing motion trajectory. The wing trajectory is therefore an additional design criterion to be optimized along with traditional aircraft parameters and could open the door to dual aerial-aquatic robotic vehicles. In this paper we showcase one realization of a three-dimensional flapping-wing actuation system that reproduces the force coefficients necessary for dual aerial-aquatic flight. The wing apparatus oscillates by the root and employs an active upstream and downstream sweep degree of freedom. We analyze two types of motions in detail: aerial motions where the wing tip moves upstream during the power stroke of each flapping cycle and aquatic motions where the wing tip moves downstream during the power stroke. We design these aerial and aquatic flapping-wing trajectories using an experiment-coupled optimization routine, allowing control of the unsteady forces throughout each flapping cycle. Additionally, we elucidate the wakes of these complex wing trajectories using dye visualization, correlating the wake vortex structures with simultaneous experiment force measurements. After optimization, the wing trajectories generate the large force envelope necessary for propulsion in both fluid media and furthermore demonstrate improved control over the unsteady wake

    The Baseline Design of The UiS Subsea Glider for Cargo and Liquid Carbon Dioxide Transportation

    This dissertation presents the baseline design of the UiS subsea-freight glider (USFG) for cargo and liquid carbon dioxide transportation. The USFG is a cutting-edge autonomous vessel developed to be an alternative to active transportation technologies and satisfy the demands of small-scale fields for CO2 transportation. Usually, these smaller fields fail to economically justify the costs of large tanker or cargo ships or underwater pipelines on the seabed, as the transport volume is nominal compared to larger fields. The USFG can travel underwater at an operational depth of 200 meters, allowing the glider to carry freight operations without considering ideal weather windows. The length of the USFG is 5.50 meters, along with a beam of 50.25 meters, which allows the vessel to carry 518 m3 of CO2 while serving the storage needs of the carbon capture and storage (CCS) ventures on the Norwegian continental shelf. It can maneuver itself underwater by monitoring the flow between the ballast tanks. During the entire mission of the USFG, from capturing to injection locations, it follows a pre-laid route while experiencing transient loads from the ocean current. A planar mathematical model for the analysis of equilibrium glide paths of the USFG is presented. The model is developed using Simscape Multibody in MATLAB/Simulink to study the volatile dynamics of the glider. Subsequently, the gliding paths of USFG in the vertical plane are analyzed along with the observability and controllability of the steady equilibrium glides. Along with the control gliding design of the USFG, the mechanical design is also presented in this work. The maneuvering model of the USFG is presented along with two operational case studies: the equilibrium glide and the -38° dive. The extreme motion along the surge direction affects the range of the glider (vital for battery design) and the dynamic controller parameters concerning maneuverability. Finally, the averaged conditional exceedance rate (ACER) is employed to scrutinize the extreme motion (surge direction) of the USFG while gliding to a defined depth. This analysis is done when the glider is exposed to an average current velocity of 0.5 m/s and 1.0 m/s. The presented ACER method efficiently uses the available data points and accurately predicts the extreme surge responses precisely and accurately

    Aquatic escape for micro-aerial vehicles

    As our world is experiencing climate changes, we are in need of better monitoring technologies. Most of our planet is covered with water and robots will need to move in aquatic environments. A mobile robotic platform that possesses efficient locomotion and is capable of operating in diverse scenarios would give us an advantage in data collection that can validate climate models, emergency relief and experimental biological research. This field of application is the driving vector of this robotics research which aims to understand, produce and demonstrate solutions of aerial-aquatic autonomous vehicles. However, small robots face major challenges in operating both in water and in air, as well as transition between those fluids, mainly due to the difference of density of the media. This thesis presents the developments of new aquatic locomotion strategies at small scales that further enlarge the operational domain of conventional platforms. This comprises flight, shallow water locomotion and the transition in-between. Their operating principles, manufacturing methods and control methods are discussed and evaluated in detail. I present multiple unique aerial-aquatic robots with various water escape mechanisms, spanning over different scales. The five robotic platforms showcased share similarities that are compared. The take-off methods are analysed carefully and the underlying physics principles put into light. While all presented research fulfils a similar locomotion objective - i.e aerial and aquatic motion - their relevance depends on the environmental conditions and supposed mission. As such, the performance of each vehicle is discussed and characterised in real, relevant conditions. A novel water-reactive fuel thruster is developed for impulsive take-off, allowing consecutive and multiple jump-gliding from the water surface in rough conditions. At a smaller scale, the escape of a milligram robotic bee is achieved. In addition, a new robot class is demonstrated, that employs the same wings for flying as for passive surface sailing. This unique capability allows the flexibility of flight to be combined with long-duration surface missions, enabling autonomous prolonged aquatic monitoring.Open Acces

    Dynamics of Pectoral Fin Rowing in a Fish with an Extreme Rowing Stroke: The threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus)

    The dynamics of pectoral fin rowing in the threespine stickleback are investigated by measuring the instantaneous force balance on freely swimming fish throughout the stroke cycle and comparing the measured forces with fin motions and an unsteady, blade-element model of pectoral fin propulsion. Both measured and modeled forces suggest that attached vortex and circulatory forces and not inertial (added mass) forces dominate the force balance. Peak forces occur at midstrokes. There is no evidence for large force peaks at the stroke transitions due to either rapid fin rotation (supination) or rapid fin closure against the body. The energetics of pectoral fin rowing are estimated using the unsteady blade-element model and an indirect method based on the center of mass dynamics. The results indicate that the mechanical efficiency of pectoral fin rowing is low (0.1-0.3) relative to a flapping mechanism and possibly relative to axial undulation at comparable speeds

    Developing and Testing an Anguilliform Robot Swimming with Theoretically High Hydrodynamic Efficiency

    An anguilliform swimming robot replicating an idealized motion is a complex marine vehicle necessitating both a theoretical and experimental analysis to completely understand its propulsion characteristics. The ideal anguilliform motion within is theorized to produce ``wakeless\u27\u27 swimming (Vorus, 2011), a reactive swimming technique that produces thrust by accelerations of the added mass in the vicinity of the body. The net circulation for the unsteady motion is theorized to be eliminated. The robot was designed to replicate the desired, theoretical motion by applying control theory methods. Independent joint control was used due to hardware limitations. The fluid velocity vectors in the propulsive wake downstream of the tethered, swimming robot were measured using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). Simultaneously, a load cell measured the thrust (or drag) forces of the robot via a hydrodynamic tether. The measured field velocities and thrust forces were compared to the theoretical predictions for each. The desired, ideal motion was not replicated consistently during PIV testing, producing off-design scenarios. The thrust-computing method for the ideal motion was applied to the actual, recorded motion and compared to the load cell results. The theoretical field velocities were computed differently by accounting for shed vortices due to a different shape than ideal. The theoretical thrust shows trends similar to the measured thrust over time. Similarly promising comparisons are found between the theoretical and measured flow-field velocities with respect to qualitative trends and velocity magnitudes. The initial thrust coefficient prediction was deemed insufficient, and a new one was determined from an iterative process. The off-design cases shed flow structures into the downstream wake of the robot. The first is a residual disturbance of the shed boundary layer, which is to be expected for the ideal case, and dissipates within one motion cycle. The second are larger-order vortices that are being shed at two distinct times during a half-cycle. These qualitative and quantitative comparisons were used to confirm the possibility of the original hypothesis of ``wakeless\u27\u27 swimming. While the ideal motion could not be tested consistently, the results of the off-design cases agree significantly with the adjusted theoretical computations. This shows that the boundary conditions derived from slender-body constraints and the assumptions of ideal flow theory are sufficient enough to predict the propulsion characteristics of an anguilliform robot undergoing this specific motion
