    Constraint-based run-time state migration for live modeling

    Live modeling enables modelers to incrementally update models as they are running and get immediate feedback about the impact of their changes. Changes introduced in a model may trigger inconsistencies between the model and its run-time state (e.g., deleting the current state in a statemachine); effectively requiring to migrate the run-time state to comply with the updated model. In this paper, we introduce an approach that enables to automatically migrate such runtime state based on declarative constraints defined by the language designer. We illustrate the approach using Nextep, a meta-modeling language for defining invariants and migration constraints on run-time state models. When a model changes, Nextep employs model finding techniques, backed by a solver, to automatically infer a new run-time model that satisfies the declared constraints. We apply Nextep to define migration strategies for two DSLs, and report on its expressiveness and performance

    Fiat: Deductive Synthesis of Abstract Data Types in a Proof Assistant

    We present Fiat, a library for the Coq proof assistant supporting refinement of declarative specifications into efficient functional programs with a high degree of automation. Each refinement process leaves a proof trail, checkable by the normal Coq kernel, justifying its soundness. We focus on the synthesis of abstract data types that package methods with private data. We demonstrate the utility of our framework by applying it to the synthesis of query structures--abstract data types with SQL-like query and insert operations. Fiat includes a library for writing specifications of query structures in SQL-inspired notation, expressing operations over relations (tables) in terms of mathematical sets. This library includes a suite of tactics for automating the refinement of specifications into efficient, correct- by-construction OCaml code. Using these tactics, a programmer can generate such an implementation completely automatically by only specifying the equivalent of SQL indexes, data structures capturing useful views of the abstract data.     An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.

    This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.

    Advanced flight control system study

    A fly by wire flight control system architecture designed for high reliability includes spare sensor and computer elements to permit safe dispatch with failed elements, thereby reducing unscheduled maintenance. A methodology capable of demonstrating that the architecture does achieve the predicted performance characteristics consists of a hierarchy of activities ranging from analytical calculations of system reliability and formal methods of software verification to iron bird testing followed by flight evaluation. Interfacing this architecture to the Lockheed S-3A aircraft for flight test is discussed. This testbed vehicle can be expanded to support flight experiments in advanced aerodynamics, electromechanical actuators, secondary power systems, flight management, new displays, and air traffic control concepts

    On the Practice and Application of Context-Free Language Reachability

    The Context-Free Language Reachability (CFL-R) formalism relates to some of the most important computational problems facing researchers and industry practitioners. CFL-R is a generalisation of graph reachability and language recognition, such that pairs in a labelled graph are reachable if and only if there is a path between them whose labels, joined together in the order they were encountered, spell a word in a given context-free language. The formalism finds particular use as a vehicle for phrasing and reasoning about program analysis, since complex relationships within the data, logic or structure of computer programs are easily expressed and discovered in CFL-R. Unfortunately, The potential of CFL-R can not be met by state of the art solvers. Current algorithms have scalability and expressibility issues that prevent them from being used on large graph instances or complex grammars. This work outlines our efforts in understanding the practical concerns surrounding CFL-R, and applying this knowledge to improve the performance of CFL-R applications. We examine the major difficulties with solving CFL-R-based analyses at-scale, via a case-study of points-to analysis as a CFL-R problem. Points-to analysis is fundamentally important to many modern research and industry efforts, and is relevant to optimisation, bug-checking and security technologies. Our understanding of the scalability challenge motivates work in developing practical CFL-R techniques. We present improved evaluation algorithms and declarative optimisation techniques for CFL-R, capitalising on the simplicity of CFL-R to creating fully automatic methodologies. The culmination of our work is a general-purpose and high-performance tool called Cauliflower, a solver-generator for CFL-R problems. We describe Cauliflower and evaluate its performance experimentally, showing significant improvement over alternative general techniques

    DESIGN OF OPTIMAL PROCEDURAL CONTROLLERS FOR CHEMICAL PROCESSES MODELLED AS STOCHASTIC DISCRETE EVENT SYSTEMS

    This thesis presents a formal method for the the design of optimal and provably correct procedural controllers for chemical processes modelled as Stochastic Discrete Event Systems (SDESs). The thesis extends previous work on Procedural Control Theory (PCT) [1], which used formal techniques for the design of automation Discrete Event Systems (DESs). Many dynamic processes for example, batch operations and the start-up and shut down of continuous plants, can be modelled as DESs. Controllers for these systems are typically of the sequential type. Most prior work on characterizing the behaviour of DESs has been restricted to deterministic systems. However, DESs consisting of concurrent interacting processes present a broad spectrum of uncertainty such as uncertainty in the occurrence of events. The formalism of weighted probabilistic Finite State Machine (wp-FSM) is introduced for modelling SDESs and pre-de ned failure models are embedded in wp-FSM to describe and control the abnormal behaviour of systems. The thesis presents e cient algorithms and procedures for synthesising optimal procedural controllers for such SDESs. The synthesised optimal controllers for such stochastic systems will take into consideration probabilities of events occurrence, operation costs and failure costs of events in making optimal choices in the design of control sequences. The controllers will force the system from an initial state to one or more goal states with an optimal expected cost and when feasible drive the system from any state reached after a failure to goal states. On the practical side, recognising the importance of the needs of the target end user, the design of a suitable software implementation is completed. The potential of both the approach and the supporting software are demonstrated by two industry case studies. Furthermore, the simulation environment gPROMS was used to test whether the operating speci cations thus designed were met in a combined discrete/continuous environment
