Proceedings of the 20th IEEE Region 8 EUROCON Conference, EUROCON 2023, 6-8 July 2023, TurĂn, ItalyNetwork densification is a key technology to achieve the spectral efficiency (SE) expected in 5G wireless networks and beyond. However, the proximity between transmitters and receivers increases the interference levels, becoming a major drawback. To overcome this problem, several interference management techniques have been proposed to increase the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Interference alignment (IA) algorithms have been extensively studied due to their capability to achieve optimal degrees of freedom (DoFs) in interference channels (ICs). Nevertheless, most of the works are limited to a purely theoretical analysis based on non-realistic assumptions such as perfect channel state information (CSI) and the synchronization of all nodes in the network. To the best of our knowledge, only a few articles address the IA implementation using reconfigurable hardware. To cover this lack, this paper proposes a practical design of the IA algorithm based on the SINR maximization, known as MAX-SINR, considering a multi-user IC. Each transmitter and receiver is implemented on the National Instruments USRP-2942. A practical solution for the channel estimation and synchronization stages in an IC, that are usually omitted in theoretical works, is developed. The performance of the proposed implementation is shown in terms of the SINR gain, SE, and bit error rate (BER). Unlike previous works, all the results are based on real measurements providing valuable insights into the performance of IA algorithms. This work has received funding from the European Union (EU) Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Sklodowska-Curie ETN TeamUp5G, grant agreement No. 813391. Interference alignment testbeds

Interference alignment has triggered high impact research in wireless communications since it was proposed nearly 10 years ago. However, the vast majority of research is centered on the theory of interference alignment and is hardly feasible in view of the existing state-of-the-art wireless technologies. Although several research groups have assessed the feasibility of interference alignment via testbed measurements in realistic environments, the experimental evaluation of interference alignment is still in its infancy since most of the experiments were limited to simpler scenarios and configurations. This article summarizes the practical limitations of experimentally evaluating interference alignment, provides an overview of the available interference alignment testbed implementations, including the costs, and highlights the imperatives for succeeding interference alignment testbed implementations. Finally, the article explores future research directions on the applications of interference alignment in the next generation wireless systems.Jacobo Fanjul's research has been supported by the Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO) of Spain, under grants TEC2013-47141-C4-R (RACHEL project) and FPI grant BES-2014-069786. In this paper, we present an experimental study on the performance of spatial interference alignment (IA) in indoor wireless local area network scenarios that use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) according to the physical-layer specifications of the IEEE 802.11a standard. Experiments have been carried out using a wireless network testbed capable of implementing a 3-user MIMO interference channel. We have implemented IA decoding schemes that can be designed according to distinct criteria (e.g., zero-forcing or MaxSINR). The measurement methodology has been validated considering practical issues like the number of OFDM training symbols used for channel estimation or feedback time. In case of asynchronous users, a time-domain IA decoding filter is also compared to its frequency domain counterpart. We also evaluated the performance of IA from bit error ratio measurement-based results in comparison to different time-division multiple access transmission schemes. The comparison includes single- and multiple-antenna systems transmitting over the dominant mode of the MIMO channel. Our results indicate that spatial IA is suitable for practical indoor scenarios in which wireless channels often exhibit relatively large coherence times. This work has been supported by Xunta de Galicia, MINECO of Spain, and by FEDER funds of the E.U. under Grant 2012/287, Grant TEC2013-47141-C4-R (RACHEL project), Grant CSD2008-00010 (COMONSENS project), and FPU Grants AP2010-2189 and AP2009-1105

Un-coordinated multi-user and inter-cell interference alignment based on partial and outdated information for large cellular networks

The cellular networks have gone through rapid evolution during the past decade. However, their performance is still limited due to the problem of interference. Therefore, interference management in current and future cellular networks is still an ongoing research topic. Interference Alignment is one of the techniques to manage the interference efficiently by using "align" and "suppression" strategy. In the first part of this thesis we focus on Coordinated inter cell interference alignment in a large cellular network. We assess the performance of interference alignment based transmit precoding under specific receiver strategies and coordination scenarios by comparing with different state of the art precoding schemes. We continue our assessment by considering imperfect channel state information at the transmitter. The results show that the gains of coordinated alignment based transmission are very sensitive to the receiver strategies and imperfections as compared to the other precoding schemes. However, in case of the availability of good channel conditions with very slow moving users, coordinated interference alignment outperforms the other baselines even with imperfect channel state information. In addition to that, we propose efficient user selection methods to enhance the performance of coordinated alignment. The results of our assessment draws important conclusions about the application of coordinated interference alignment in practical systems. In the second part of the thesis we consider a cellular system where each cell is serving multiple users simultaneously using the same radio resource. In this scenario, we have to manage not only the inter cell interference but also the multi user interference. For this purpose, we propose a novel Uncoordinated transmit precoding scheme for multi user cellular networks which is based on the alignment of multi user interference with partial and outdated inter cell interference. We show analytically that our scheme approaches the performance optimal transmission scheme. With the help of simulations we show that our proposal outperforms the state of the art non-alignment based multi user transmit precoding schemes We further propose user selection methods which exploit the diversity gains and improve the system spectral efficiency. In order to assess the feasibility of our proposal in a real system, we evaluate our scheme with practical constraints like imperfect information at the transmitter and limited feedback in uplink channel. For the proof of concept we also evaluate the performance of our scheme with measured channels using a software defined measurement platform. Finally, we also assess the application of our proposal in future heterogeneous networks. The outcome of our efforts states that as an interference alignment based transmission scheme, our scheme is a good candidate to manage the two dimensional interference in multi user cellular networks. It outperforms the non-alignment baselines in many scenarios even with practical constraints
