    Evaluation of Corporate Sustainability

    As a consequence of an increasing demand in sustainable development for business organizations, the evaluation of corporate sustainability has become a topic intensively focused by academic researchers and business practitioners. Several techniques in the context of multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) have been suggested to facilitate the evaluation and the analysis of sustainability performance. However, due to the complexity of evaluation, such as a compilation of quantitative and qualitative measures, interrelationships among various sustainability criteria, the assessor’s hesitation in scoring, or incomplete information, simple techniques may not be able to generate reliable results which can reflect the overall sustainability performance of a company. This paper proposes a series of mathematical formulations based upon the evidential reasoning (ER) approach which can be used to aggregate results from qualitative judgments with quantitative measurements under various types of complex and uncertain situations. The evaluation of corporate sustainability through the ER model is demonstrated using actual data generated from three sugar manufacturing companies in Thailand. The proposed model facilitates managers in analysing the performance and identifying improvement plans and goals. It also simplifies decision making related to sustainable development initiatives. The model can be generalized to a wider area of performance assessment, as well as to any cases of multiple criteria analysis

    This second volume dedicated to Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) in Information Fusion brings in new fusion quantitative rules (such as the PCR1-6, where PCR5 for two sources does the most mathematically exact redistribution of conflicting masses to the non-empty sets in the fusion literature), qualitative fusion rules, and the Belief Conditioning Rule (BCR) which is different from the classical conditioning rule used by the fusion community working with the Mathematical Theory of Evidence. Other fusion rules are constructed based on T-norm and T-conorm (hence using fuzzy logic and fuzzy set in information fusion), or more general fusion rules based on N-norm and N-conorm (hence using neutrosophic logic and neutrosophic set in information fusion), and an attempt to unify the fusion rules and fusion theories. The known fusion rules are extended from the power set to the hyper-power set and comparison between rules are made on many examples.     Information selection and fusion in vision systems

    Handling the enormous amounts of data produced by data-intensive imaging systems, such as multi-camera surveillance systems and microscopes, is technically challenging. While image and video compression help to manage the data volumes, they do not address the basic problem of information overflow. In this PhD we tackle the problem in a more drastic way. We select information of interest to a specific vision task, and discard the rest. We also combine data from different sources into a single output product, which presents the information of interest to end users in a suitable, summarized format. We treat two types of vision systems. The first type is conventional light microscopes. During this PhD, we have exploited for the first time the potential of the curvelet transform for image fusion for depth-of-field extension, allowing us to combine the advantages of multi-resolution image analysis for image fusion with increased directional sensitivity. As a result, the proposed technique clearly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, both on real microscopy data and on artificially generated images. The second type is camera networks with overlapping fields of view. To enable joint processing in such networks, inter-camera communication is essential. Because of infrastructure costs, power consumption for wireless transmission, etc., transmitting high-bandwidth video streams between cameras should be avoided. Fortunately, recently designed 'smart cameras', which have on-board processing and communication hardware, allow distributing the required image processing over the cameras. This permits compactly representing useful information from each camera. We focus on representing information for people localization and observation, which are important tools for statistical analysis of room usage, quick localization of people in case of building fires, etc. To further save bandwidth, we select which cameras should be involved in a vision task and transmit observations only from the selected cameras. We provide an information-theoretically founded framework for general purpose camera selection based on the Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence. Applied to tracking, it allows tracking people using a dynamic selection of as little as three cameras with the same accuracy as when using up to ten cameras

    Parent’s Emotion Coaching of Positive and Negative Emotions as it Relates to Children’s Communication of Emotions

    Children’s skills for effective communication about their emotional experiences is important for adaptive expression, regulation, and understanding of emotions. Although research supports associations between parental emotion socialization (e.g., emotion coaching) and distal child outcomes, such as social skills, there is scant research on proximal outcomes, such as children’s emotion communication. Additionally, existing research focuses on coaching and communication of negative over positive emotions. In the current study, parents’ coaching and children’s communication of emotions were rated while parent-child dyads (N=115, Mage = 9 years) were observed in the lab discussing past family experiences. Parents coached and children communicated in a more specific and emotion-focused way about negative than positive emotions. The strength of associations between parents’ more effective emotion coaching and children’s more effective emotion communication were similar for positive and negative discussions, therefore, discussions of positive events may still provide a fruitful context for emotion learning
