Itinerant Architecture: Global Politics and World Building in the Work of Minoru Yamasaki and Associates, 1951-86

The office of Minoru Yamasaki and Associates (MYA) was an important actor in twentieth century American architectural production, yet Yamasaki himself appears as an ambiguous figure in postwar architecture. Until recently, practicing architects and historians alike have largely overlooked MYA’s many contributions, dismissing them as overly corporate or without significant formal innovation. At the same time, Yamasaki’s status as a Japanese-American growing up during WWII has been largely overlooked. Reconsidering MYA’s projects through the thematic lens of itinerancy and displacement, the dissertation explores connections between architecture and Cold War diplomacy, international travel, and global economic development. Over the course of four chapters, I examine the firm’s designs for airports, hotels, apartment, and governmental buildings as emblematic of global capitalism—but also as constitutive of new forms of global political and economic relations. Each building-centered case study discloses important partnerships constituted among architects, city planners, developers, private corporations, and foreign governments that influenced the production of American-designed buildings on a range of global sites. Looking beyond the World Trade Center and the Pruitt-Igoe public housing project, the dissertation reveals how MYA constructed postwar America in a global setting—at home and abroad—even as the figure of Yamasaki himself ambiguously reflects the costs of U.S. hegemony.PHDArchitectureUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. thesisThe premise of this research is to determine when the end of rentierism will occur in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as well as what actions the government is taking to prepare for it. After compiling population growth, domestic consumption demand, and depreciating oil production into four separate future predictive scenarios, the results are that the end of rentierism will occur between 2022-2033 in Saudi Arabia. Analysis on the social, economic, and political landscapes was conducted to illustrate the current social and economic obligations that the government currently has. Alternatives to petroleum were analyzed, resulting in the finding that there are no viable natural resource alternatives to oil in order to maintain rentierism. The primary obstacles to preparing for the death of rentierism were found to be the extreme dissent within and between the House of Saud and the religious establishment, and the lack of stated goals with timelines and accountability for implementing economic diversification goals

An Analysis of Public Boys’ High School Location Using GIS: Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Case Study

The research study area is the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Jeddah high schools are separated by gender due to cultural background. In 2018, a research was conducted related to public girls’ high schools (Belarem et al., 2018) and the research neglected boys’ public high schools which is considered a gap in the study. In addition, the emphasis of this research is on the male population because it is more than the female population in the city which will require more schools for boys in the future. Moreover, and from an urban planner point of view, public schools are part of the city infrastructure and the quality of physical, social, and academic of schools is part of the quality of the city. This research is to study Public Boys’ High school physical location distribution and population accessibility to these schools using Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis tools such as euclidian and network analysis. Furthermore, city historical Landsat imagery in the last 30 years to be used to study the city urban sprawl(population) to estimate future urban sprawl (population) direction in the city. Such analysis will enable urban planners and educators to come together to determine future school siting for better quality

The planning and development of the city of jeddah1970-1984

For centuries Jeddah has been the principal entrepôt to western Arabia and the gateway to the Holy Cities of Mecca and Medina. This work covers the period 1970-1984 during which, under the writer's personal direction on site in Jeddah, the city’s first comprehensive development plan was formulated and implemented. In narrative style, this thesis describes the preparation and monitoring of the original plan and its subsequent review by others. With the benefit of hindsight and personal experience, the writer offers an explanation for the successful realisation of the development plan despite an unforeseen four-fold growth in population over this fifteen year period. It can be concluded that this was due principally to the active and harmonious participation of a locally appointed composite Saudi technical team with the Consultant's British planning team and the inspired leadership of Engineer Mohammed Said Farsi, Mayor of Jeddah. The flexible philosophy and format of the plan enabled it to be modified in consequence of unforeseen changes to the Kingdom’s base economy arising from the increased demand for petroleum products in 1973. This approach to city planning is identified as making a major contribution to the successful realisation of the original objectives of the plan

This research aims to observe the legality of determination of the fake news or hoax spreading suspect as seen from Law no 11 of 2008 on Electronic information and transaction law. The employed method is normative legal researc by examining applied legal rules in Indonesia. The results show that the determination of a suspect in a fake news of hoax case is based on Article 28 paragraph (1) of Electronic information and transaction law (UU ITE). However, th use of the article is unfitting because the existence of a clause "which causes consumer losses in Electroni Transactions". The term is used in trading activities through electronic systems (electronic commerce) in the national and international trades. Besides, the element of consumer loss must be fulfilled. Consequently, a special article in Electronic information and transaction law related to hoax spreading should be composed. Keywords: Lagalization, Determination, Fake News, Suspec

Full version unavailable due to 3rd party copyright restrictionsThis thesis aims at investigating the level of service at departure area of KKIA. The study further measures the perceived quality of service and passenger satisfaction in term of tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy by using five steps of lean six sigma (Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve and Control). The study aims to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of using a lean six-sigma managerial approach to the departure area of KKIA to enhance the level of service (LOS) and customer satisfaction. The passenger flow through the airport is used to measure the quality of services. Existing studies that discuss lean six-sigma implementation in airports were evaluated. Data was collected about KKIA departure area and its LOS both before and after the lean six-sigma implementation. Additionally, a SERVQUAL questionnaire was used to evaluate pre- and post-implementation review. The questionnaire features easy-to-collect data to measuring the perceived quality of service and evaluate passenger satisfaction with the LOS in KKIA. Before the study concepts of LOS and Lean was unheard within the airport community. Initial evaluation show poor customer service and many delays (waste) within the departure are at KKIA. During the study a growing awareness of Lean and LOS showed improvements in the customers’ experience, e.g, removing the shop at the entrance, improving flow thought the airport. Concluding the study, there was a total reduction in waiting from 54.74 minutes to 34.87 minutes (35.7% reduction). Also the LOS on the IATA Performance Standard went from E (Inadequate) to C (Good). This is improvement, excellent but without continuous improvements the Airport’s LOS will reduce back as passenger numbers grow from 16 million passengers per year (up from 9.8 million in 2004), to an expected 25 million by 2025. Interesting different cultural approaches to lean management became evident during the study when compared to other implementations in Europe to the Middle East. Cultural difference will always affected the reliability of the results. However, by considering these cultural effects in answering questions and interviews, the lean implementation was still successful. As culture changes are ongoing, evaluation of the situation at KKIA is required for ongoing improvements. Best-practice for the continued improvement of ongoing lean management is suggested for the departure area at KKIA. These key strategies and best-practice approaches are useful to future implementations at other airports.Saudi Arabia government scholarshi

EVALUATION PAVEMENT DISTRESSES USING PAVEMENT CONDITION INDEX

    Get PDF
Pavement deterioration is resulted by both environmental and structural causes. It is difficult to maintain the road on the same specification that was owned at the opening and problems start to appear represented in the pavement cracks, holes and undulations and so on. Recognizing defects and understanding their causes helps us rate pavement condition and select cost-effective repairs. Periodic inspection is necessary to provide current and useful evaluation data. It is recommended that ratings be updated every year. Maintenance is an essential practice in providing for the long-term performance and the esthetic appearance of an asphalt pavement. The purpose of pavement maintenance is to correct deficiencies caused by distresses and to protect the pavement from further damage. A condition rating of the pavement will help determine what pavement maintenance technique is necessary. A methodology was proposed to investigate the pavement condition; this study focuses on flexible pavement. A manual survey is performed following ASTM D 6433. The pavement is divided into sections. Each section is divided into sample units. The type and severity of sample distress is assessed by visual inspection of the pavement sample units and the quantity of each distress is measured. Typically, this procedure requires a team of at least two engineers. The pavement evaluation results from the manual PCI survey revealed that all sections of road were fair condition. Considered the section of road that surveyed, describing the condition pavement of the all road. The pavement that has been studied at Koums area would seem to require maintenance. Thick overlay (sometimes called surface treating) is needed in a comprehensive pavement

    Airline Passengers' Satisfaction with Airports

Airports are places where people have the potential to experience either satisfaction or frustration, and marketing and tourism scholars have argued that customer satisfaction is one of the primary goals of airports. However, few studies have systemically analyzed the service quality and efficiency of airports, or examined customer satisfaction with airport facilities. While airline passengers' expectations of airport service quality have been examined, there are few studies focusing on both their expectations and desires regarding airport services. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, no available studies have analyzed passengers' expectations and desires on the basis of the desires congruency model. This study attempted to define tourists' desires and expectations congruency as well as their satisfaction with their entire airport experiences. A total of 262 airline passengers in Incheon International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport participated in the study. Six hypotheses were tested with data collected from a survey of the airline passengers with the use of descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling. Most relationships among latent variables were found to be in accordance with previous studies. Furthermore, the results of the current study implied that the desires congruency model could be applied to the satisfaction formation of airline passengers. Practical recommendations are presented for the airport managers to enhance airport services
