    Measuring satisfaction and power in influence based decision systems

    We introduce collective decision-making models associated with influence spread under the linear threshold model in social networks. We define the oblivious and the non-oblivious influence models. We also introduce the generalized opinion leader–follower model (gOLF) as an extension of the opinion leader–follower model (OLF) proposed by van den Brink et al. (2011). In our model we allow rules for the final decision different from the simple majority used in OLF. We show that gOLF models are non-oblivious influence models on a two-layered bipartite influence digraph. Together with OLF models, the satisfaction and the power measures were introduced and studied. We analyze the computational complexity of those measures for the decision models introduced in the paper. We show that the problem of computing the satisfaction or the power measure is #P-hard in all the introduced models even when the subjacent social network is a bipartite graph. Complementing this result, we provide two subfamilies of decision models in which both measures can be computed in polynomial time. We show that the collective decision functions are monotone and therefore they define an associated simple game. We relate the satisfaction and the power measures with the Rae index and the Banzhaf value of an associated simple game. This will allow the use of known approximation methods for computing the Banzhaf value, or the Rae index to their practical computation.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    [Excerpt] There have been several recent reviews of different subtopics within the general performance appraisal literature. The reader of these reviews will find, however, that the accompanying citations may be of limited utility for one or more reasons. For example, the reference sections of these reviews are usually composed of citations which support a specific theory or practical approach to the evaluation of human performance. Consequently, the citation lists for these reviews are, as they must be, highly selective and do not include works that may have only a peripheral relationship to a given reviewer\u27s target concerns. Another problem is that the citations are out of date. That is, review articles frequently contain many citations that are fifteen or more years old. The generation of new studies and knowledge in this field occurs very rapidly. This creates a need for additional reference information solely devoted to identifying the wealth of new research, ideas, and writing that is changing the field

    Managerial satisfaction with subsidiary performance; the influence of the parent MNE's capabilities and the subsidiary's environment

    Multinational enterprise performance is one of the most researched topics in the strategic management literature over the last thirty years. Despite the proliferation of studies, the dispute over the relation between firms’ international investment activities and corporate performance has not yet reached a consensus. This paper’s contribution is threefold. First, we focus on entry by West European multinational enterprises into Central and East European countries. Second, we develop a multi-theory argument, combining insights from transaction cost, new institutional, behavioral, resource-based and international strategy theories. Third, we estimate the determinants of managerial satisfaction with subsidiary performance with questionnaire data for a sample of 198 subsidiaries.

    Perceived efficacy and attitudes towards genetic science and science governance

The official published version can be obtained from the link below - © 2010 SAGE Publications.Arguments for public involvement in science and technology are often based on ideas of developing a more capable public and the assumed effects this may have for science. However, such a relationship is yet to be sufficiently explored and recent work indicates that a more involved public may have counterintuitive effects. Using nationally representative survey data for the UK and Northern Ireland, the effects of the public's own beliefs about involvement are explored. Developing the concept of "belief in public efficacy," findings suggest those who believe that the public might be able to affect the course of decision making have less approving attitudes towards future applications of genetic science; however, an individual's political efficacy does not significantly influence these attitudes. Furthermore, political efficacy and belief in public efficacy have some distinct and opposing relationships with the principles of governance people prefer. Overall, findings provide support for suggestions that it is simplistic to consider increasing public involvement as a way of increasing the approval of risky new technologies

    Effects of user experience on user resistance to change to the voice user interface of an in‑vehicle infotainment system: Implications for platform and standards competition

    This study examines the effects of user experience on user resistance to change—particularly, on the relationship between user resistance to change and its antecedents (i.e. switching costs and perceived value) in the context of the voice user interface of an in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system. This research offers several salient findings. First, it shows that user experience positively moderates the relationship between uncertainty costs (one type of switching cost) and user resistance. It also negatively moderates the association between perceived value and user resistance. Second, the research test results demonstrate that users with a high degree of prior experience with the voice user interface of other smart devices exhibit low user resistance to change to the voice user interface in an IVI system. Third, we show that three types of switching costs (transition costs, in particular) may directly influence users to resist a change to the voice user interface. Fourth, our test results empirically demonstrate that both switching costs and perceived value affect user resistance to change in the context of an IVI system, which differs from the traditional IS research setting (i.e. enterprise systems). These findings may guide not only platform leaders in designing user interfaces, user experiences, and marketing strategies, but also firms that want to defend themselves from platform envelopment while devising defensive strategies in platform and standards competition
