    A Methodology to Measure the Diachronic Language Distance between Three Languages Based on Perplexity

The three historical corpora have been constructed and collected with the closest spelling to the original on a balanced basis of fiction and non-fiction. This methodology has been applied to measure the historical distance of Galician with respect to Portuguese and Spanish, from the Middle Ages to the end of the 20th century, both in original spelling and automatically transcribed spelling. The quantitative results are contrasted with hypotheses extracted from experts in historical linguistics. Results show that Galician and Portuguese are varieties of the same language in the Middle Ages and that Galician converges and diverges with Portuguese and Spanish since the last period of the 19th century. In this process, orthography plays a relevant role.     Vulgaris: Analysis of a Corpus for Middle-Age Varieties of Italian Language

    Italian is a Romance language that has its roots in Vulgar Latin. The birth of the modern Italian started in Tuscany around the 14th century, and it is mainly attributed to the works of Dante Alighieri, Francesco Petrarca and Giovanni Boccaccio, who are among the most acclaimed authors of the medieval age in Tuscany. However, Italy has been characterized by a high variety of dialects, which are often loosely related to each other, due to the past fragmentation of the territory. Italian has absorbed influences from many of these dialects, as also from other languages due to dominion of portions of the country by other nations, such as Spain and France. In this work we present Vulgaris, a project aimed at studying a corpus of Italian textual resources from authors of different regions, ranging in a time period between 1200 and 1600. Each composition is associated to its author, and authors are also grouped in families, i.e. sharing similar stylistic/chronological characteristics. Hence, the dataset is not only a valuable resource for studying the diachronic evolution of Italian and the differences between its dialects, but it is also useful to investigate stylistic aspects between single authors. We provide a detailed statistical analysis of the data, and a corpus-driven study in dialectology and diachronic varieties

    [POR] O objetivo deste trabalho é aplicar uma metodologia baseada na perplexidade, para calcular automaticamente a distância interlinguística entre diferentes períodos históricos de variantes diatópicas de idiomas. Esta metodologia aplica-se a um corpus construído adhoc em ortografia original, numa base equilibrada de ficção e não-ficção, que mede a distância histórica entre o português europeu e do Brasil, por um lado, e o espanhol europeu e o da Argentina, por outro. Os resultados mostram distâncias muito próximas em ortografia original e transcrita automaticamente, entre as variedades diatópicas do português e do espanhol, com ligeiras convergências/divergências desde meados do século XX até hoje. É de salientar que o método não é supervisionado e pode ser aplicado a outras variedades diatópicas de línguas.[EN] The objective of this work is to apply a perplexitybased methodology to automatically calculate the cross-lingual distance between different historical periods of diatopic language variants. The results show very close distances, both in original spelling and automatically transcribed spelling, between the diatopic varieties of Portuguese and Spanish, with slight convergences/divergences from the middle of the 20th century until today. It should be noted that the method is not supervised and can be applied to other diatopic varieties of languages

    Representations of Language Varieties Are Reliable Given Corpus Similarity Measures

    This paper measures similarity both within and between 84 language varieties across nine languages. These corpora are drawn from digital sources (the web and tweets), allowing us to evaluate whether such geo-referenced corpora are reliable for modelling linguistic variation. The basic idea is that, if each source adequately represents a single underlying language variety, then the similarity between these sources should be stable across all languages and countries. The paper shows that there is a consistent agreement between these sources using frequency-based corpus similarity measures. This provides further evidence that digital geo-referenced corpora consistently represent local language varieties

    Automatic dating of medieval charters from Denmark

    Dating of medieval text sources is a central task common to the field of manuscript studies. It is a difficult process requiring expert philological and historical knowledge. We investigate the issue of automatic dating of a collection of about 300 charters from medieval Denmark, in particular how n-gram models based on different transcription levels of the charters can be used to assign the manuscripts to a specific temporal interval. We frame the problem as a classification task by dividing the period into bins of 50 years and using these as classes in a supervised learning setting to develop SVM classifiers. We show that the more detailed facsimile transcription, which captures palaeographic characteristics of a text, provides better results than the diplomatic level, where such distinctions are normalised. Furthermore, both character and word n-grams show promising results, the highest accuracy reaching 74.96 %. This level of classification accuracy corresponds to being able to date almost 75 % of the charters with a 25-year error margin, which philologists use as a standard of the precision with which medieval texts can be dated manually.peer-reviewe
