Service discovery becomes an issue of vital importance in utilising grid facilities. This paper presents ROSSE, a Rough sets based search engine for grid service discovery. Building on Rough sets theory, ROSSE is novel in its capability to deal with uncertainty of properties when matching services. In this way, ROSSE can discover the services that are most relevant to a service query from a functional point of view. Since functionally matched services may have distinct non-functional properties related to Quality of Service (QoS), ROSSE introduces a QoS model to further filter matched services with their QoS values to maximise user satisfaction in service discovery. ROSSE is evaluated in terms of its accuracy and efficiency in discovery of computing services

    From software APIs to web service ontologies: a semi-automatic extraction method

    Successful employment of semantic web services depends on the availability of high quality ontologies to describe the domains of these services. As always, building such ontologies is difficult and costly, thus hampering web service deployment. Our hypothesis is that since the functionality offered by a web service is reflected by the underlying software, domain ontologies could be built by analyzing the documentation of that software. We verify this hypothesis in the domain of RDF ontology storage tools.We implemented and fine-tuned a semi-automatic method to extract domain ontologies from software documentation. The quality of the extracted ontologies was verified against a high quality hand-built ontology of the same domain. Despite the low linguistic quality of the corpus, our method allows extracting a considerable amount of information for a domain ontology

    Integration of BPM systems

    New technologies have emerged to support the global economy where for instance suppliers, manufactures and retailers are working together in order to minimise the cost and maximise efficiency. One of the technologies that has become a buzz word for many businesses is business process management or BPM. A business process comprises activities and tasks, the resources required to perform each task, and the business rules linking these activities and tasks. The tasks may be performed by human and/or machine actors. Workflow provides a way of describing the order of execution and the dependent relationships between the constituting activities of short or long running processes. Workflow allows businesses to capture not only the information but also the processes that transform the information - the process asset (Koulopoulos, T. M., 1995). Applications which involve automated, human-centric and collaborative processes across organisations are inherently different from one organisation to another. Even within the same organisation but over time, applications are adapted as ongoing change to the business processes is seen as the norm in today’s dynamic business environment. The major difference lies in the specifics of business processes which are changing rapidly in order to match the way in which businesses operate. In this chapter we introduce and discuss Business Process Management (BPM) with a focus on the integration of heterogeneous BPM systems across multiple organisations. We identify the problems and the main challenges not only with regards to technologies but also in the social and cultural context.     Web service searching

    With the growing number of Web services, it is no longer adequate to locate a Web service by searching its name or browsing a UDDI directory. An efficient Web services discovery mechanism is necessary for locating and selecting the required Web services. Searching mechanism should be based on Web service description rather than on keywords. In this work, we introduce a Web service searching prototype that can locate Web services by comparing all available information encoded in Web service description, such as operation name, input and output types, the structure of the underlying XML schema, and the semantic of element names. Our approach combines information-retrieval techniques, weighted bipartite graph matching algorithm and tree-matching algorithm. Given a query, represented as set of keywords, Web service description, or operation description, an information retrieval technique is used to rank the candidate Web services based on their text-base similarity to the query. The ranked result can be further refined by computing their structure similarity. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)     A distributed architecture for efficient Web service discovery

    open3noAlthough the definition of service-oriented architecture (SOA) included the presence of a service registry from the beginning, the first implementations (e.g., UDDI) did not really succeed mainly because of security and governance issues. This article tackles the problem by introducing DREAM (Distributed Registry by ExAMple): a publish/subscribe-based solution to integrate existing, different registries, along with a match-making approach to ease the publication and retrieval of services. DREAM fosters the interoperability among registry technologies and supports UDDI, ebXML Registry, and other registries. The publish/subscribe paradigm allows service providers to decide the services they want to publish, and requestors to be informed of the services that satisfy their interests. As for the match-making, DREAM supports different ways to evaluate the matching between published and required services.     Exploiting Social Annotation for Automatic Resource Discovery

    Information integration applications, such as mediators or mashups, that require access to information resources currently rely on users manually discovering and integrating them in the application. Manual resource discovery is a slow process, requiring the user to sift through results obtained via keyword-based search. Although search methods have advanced to include evidence from document contents, its metadata and the contents and link structure of the referring pages, they still do not adequately cover information sources -- often called ``the hidden Web''-- that dynamically generate documents in response to a query. The recently popular social bookmarking sites, which allow users to annotate and share metadata about various information sources, provide rich evidence for resource discovery. In this paper, we describe a probabilistic model of the user annotation process in a social bookmarking system del.icio.us. We then use the model to automatically find resources relevant to a particular information domain.     A matching approach to business services and software services

    Recent studies have shown that service-oriented architecture (SOA) has the potential to revive enterprise legacy systems (Cai et al., 2011; Gaševic and Hatala, 2010; De Castro et al., 2011; Chengjun, 2008; Elgedawy, 2009; Tian et al., 2007; Chen et al., 2009; Zhang et al., 2006; Sindhgatta and Ponnalagu, 2008; Khadka, 2011), making their continued service in the corporate world viable. In the process of reengineering legacy systems to service-oriented architecture, some software services extracted in legacy system can be reused to implement business services in target systems. In order to achieve efficient reuse to software services, a matching approach is proposed to extract the software services related to specified business services, where service semantics and structure similarity measures are integrated to evaluate the similarity degree between business service and software services. Experiments indicate that the approach can efficiently map business services to relevant software services, and then legacy systems can be reused as much as possible

    Web Service Reputation Evaluation Based on QoS Measurement

    In the early service transactions, quality of service (QoS) information was published by service provider which was not always true and credible. For better verification the trust of the QoS information was provided by the Web service. In this paper, the factual QoS running data are collected by our WS-QoS measurement tool; based on these objectivity data, an algorithm compares the difference of the offered and measured quality data of the service and gives the similarity, and then a reputation evaluation method computes the reputation level of the Web service based on the similarity. The initial implementation and experiment with three Web services' example show that this approach is feasible and these values can act as the references for subsequent consumers to select the service
