Integrating E-Commerce and Data Mining: Architecture and Challenges
We show that the e-commerce domain can provide all the right ingredients for
successful data mining and claim that it is a killer domain for data mining. We
describe an integrated architecture, based on our expe-rience at Blue Martini
Software, for supporting this integration. The architecture can dramatically
reduce the pre-processing, cleaning, and data understanding effort often
documented to take 80% of the time in knowledge discovery projects. We
emphasize the need for data collection at the application server layer (not the
web server) in order to support logging of data and metadata that is essential
to the discovery process. We describe the data transformation bridges required
from the transaction processing systems and customer event streams (e.g.,
clickstreams) to the data warehouse. We detail the mining workbench, which
needs to provide multiple views of the data through reporting, data mining
algorithms, visualization, and OLAP. We con-clude with a set of challenges.Comment: KDD workshop: WebKDD 200
The Growing Importance of Risk in Financial Regulation
This paper traces the developments that have contributed to the importance of risk in
regulation. Not only does it consider theories associated with risk, it also discusses
explanations as to why risk has become so important within regulatory and governmental
circles. Two forms of risk regulation, namely risk based regulation and meta regulation are
considered. As well as considering the application of both in jurisdictions such as the UK, the
paper places greater focus in discussing the importance of meta regulation in jurisdictions
such as Germany, Italy and the US. The preference for meta regulation is based on the
premises, not only of the advantages considered in this paper but also on the application of
Basel 11 in several jurisdictions. Whilst meta regulation also has its disadvantages, the
impact of risk based regulation on the use of external auditors plays a part in the preference
for meta regulation

Using agent based simulation to empirically examine complexity in carbon footprint business process
Through the critical analysis of the extant literature, it is observed that Simulation is widely used as a research method in Natural Sciences, Engineering and Social Sciences, in addition to argumentation and formalisation as the third way of carrying out research. Simulation is not so widely used in Business and Management research as it ought to have been, though this is changing for the better with the technological advances in computers and their computational power. These technological advances enhance the capability of theoretical research models, in defining a problem and their use in empirically examining a solution to the problem in simulated reality, like never before. Management journal searches for âSimulation and Complexity Theoryâ returned nil or zero returns, which explain that this combination is not popular in management research, though they are used individually more often. The major objective of this paper is to analyse some of the conceptual (or theoretical) and methodological (or empirical) contributions that Agent Based Simulation and Complexity Theory can make to the business and management community in their business process related research In view of this, some basic ideas are discussed of using Agent Based Simulation as a method in Business and Management Studies research and how an Agent Based Model can be applied to a business process as complex as Carbon Footprint. It is in this context that the use of Complexity as the base theory to empirically examine a business process is discussed. Throughout this article, our research on complex adaptive systems (e.g., Accounting Information System) in continuously changing organisations managing complex business processes (e.g., Carbon Footprint business process) is considered as the basis for illustrating some of the concepts. Through this article, avenues for further management research using these tools and methodology are suggested
Digital service analysis and design : the role of process modelling
Digital libraries are evolving from content-centric systems to person-centric systems. Emergent services are interactive and multidimensional, associated systems multi-tiered and distributed. A holistic perspective is essential to their effective analysis and design, for beyond technical considerations, there are complex social, economic, organisational, and ergonomic requirements and relationships to consider. Such a perspective cannot be gained without direct user involvement, yet evidence suggests that development teams may be failing to effectively engage with users, relying on requirements derived from anecdotal evidence or prior experience. In such instances, there is a risk that services might be well designed, but functionally useless. This paper highlights the role of process modelling in gaining such perspective. Process modelling challenges, approaches, and success factors are considered, discussed with reference to a recent evaluation of usability and usefulness of a UK National Health Service (NHS) digital library. Reflecting on lessons learnt, recommendations are made regarding appropriate process modelling approach and application
Globalisation of HR at Function Level: Exploring the Issues Through International Recruitment, Selection and Assessment Processes
Much of the debate around convergence-divergence is based around comparative analysis of HR systems. However, we need now to combine these insights with work in the field of IHRM on firm-level motivations to optimise, standardise and export HR models abroad. A series of the changes are being wrought on a range of IHRM functions â recruitment, global staffing, management development and careers, and rewards - by the process of globalisation highlighting the difference between globally standardised, optimised or localised HR processes. This paper reports on a study of firm-level developments in international recruitment, selection and assessment, drawing upon an analysis of four case studies each conducted in a different context. Organisations are building IHRM functions that are shifting from the management of expatriation towards supplementary services to the business aimed at facilitating the globalisation process, and this involves capitalising upon the fragmentation of international employees. As HR realigns itself in response to this process of within-function globalisation (building new alliances with other functions such as marketing and IS) the new activity streams that are being developed and the new roles and skills of the HR function carry important implications for the study of convergence and divergence of IHRM practice. Globalisation at firm level revolves around complexity, and this is evidenced in two ways: first, the range of theory that we have to draw upon, and the competing issues that surface depending on the level of analysis that is adopted; and second, the different picture that might emerge depending upon the level of analysis that is adopted. This paper shows that although the field of IHRM has traditionally drawn upon core theories such as the resource-based view of the firm, relational and social capital, and institutional theory, once the full range of resourcing options now open to IHRM functions are considered, it is evident that we need to incorporate both more micro theory, as well as insights from contingent fields in order to explain some of the new practices that are emerging
