    Traditional to Evidence-Based Psychiatric Nursing Practice: Use of The Transformative Learning Theory to Promote a Change in Psychiatric Nursing Practice

    Background: Nursing leaders, regulatory and government agencies insist nurses incorporate evidence-based nursing interventions into their practice. Nurse educators are challenged to change nurses\u27 use of interventions from those based on tradition to those based on science. Providing adults with new infom1ation does not guarantee learners will actualize or even remember new infonnation. Objective: This ai1icle describes the use of Transformative Leaming theory as framework for an educational event to change current practice of psychiatric nurses. Design: Qualitative, descriptive surveys evaluated the effectiveness of the education to motivate learners \u27 change in practice. Results: Participants recognized gaps between current nursing interventions and those supported by evidence. Conclusion: Transformative Learning theory provided an effective framework for assisting the participants to acknowledge false assumptions in current practice.     The lack of physical activity and exercise participation has been an ongoingproblem for young adults aged 18-24. Universities and colleges worldwide offer a variety of required and elective physical activity courses for college credit to increase active participation in lifelong healthy lifestyles. This scoping review collected studies on college students’ motivation to participate in physical activity. The courses were taught using methods based on motivational theories. The authors of the studies collected information from the students before and after the classes to gather data on the theoretical framework’s effect on the students, if any. This review compiles this information, identifies any gaps in the literature, and makes recommendations for classroom applications or research for future studies

    Assessing iSchools

    Over the past decade, iSchools have emerged to educate the next generation of information professionals and scholars. Claiming to be edgy and innovative, how can and should these schools function in the spirit of assessment that now drives so much in the university? This essay, which explores how well we can assess iSchools, emerged from a doctoral seminar. Academic Culture and Practice, taught by Richard Cox and including four doctoral student participants and the Dean of School of Information Studies at the University of Pittsburgh, Ronald Larsen. The doctoral students, among other activities, were required to work on assignments to support a self-study for the University of Pittsburgh's reaccreditation by the Middle States Association. As we proceeded through the course, we found ourselves increasingly drawn to questions about how iSchools, in their nascent state, can assess themselves. Four major areas—reputation, evaluating productivity in scholarly publishing, student evaluation of teaching, and student satisfaction with their academic programs—that emerged based on student interest as the seminar proceeded are discussed

    This report was prepared to assist federal, state, and local policy makers and program leaders, as well as employers, nonprofit organizations, and other community partners, in developing and enhancing policies and programs to improve young adults' health, safety, and well-being. The report also suggests priorities for research to inform policy and programs for young adults.Young adulthood - ages approximately 18 to 26 - is a critical period of development with long-lasting implications for a person's economic security, health and well-being. Young adults are key contributors to the nation's workforce and military services and, since many are parents, to the healthy development of the next generation. Although 'millennials' have received attention in the popular media in recent years, young adults are too rarely treated as a distinct population in policy, programs, and research. Instead, they are often grouped with adolescents or, more often, with all adults. Currently, the nation is experiencing economic restructuring, widening inequality, a rapidly rising ratio of older adults, and an increasingly diverse population. The possible transformative effects of these features make focus on young adults especially important. A systematic approach to understanding and responding to the unique circumstances and needs of today's young adults can help to pave the way to a more productive and equitable tomorrow for young adults in particular and our society at large
