    Current issues of the management of socio-economic systems in terms of globalization challenges

    The authors of the scientific monograph have come to the conclusion that the management of socio-economic systems in the terms of global challenges requires the use of mechanisms to ensure security, optimise the use of resource potential, increase competitiveness, and provide state support to economic entities. Basic research focuses on assessment of economic entities in the terms of global challenges, analysis of the financial system, migration flows, logistics and product exports, territorial development. The research results have been implemented in the different decision-making models in the context of global challenges, strategic planning, financial and food security, education management, information technology and innovation. The results of the study can be used in the developing of directions, programmes and strategies for sustainable development of economic entities and regions, increasing the competitiveness of products and services, decision-making at the level of ministries and agencies that regulate the processes of managing socio-economic systems. The results can also be used by students and young scientists in the educational process and conducting scientific research on the management of socio-economic systems in the terms of global challenges

    A strategic turnaround model for distressed properties

    The importance of commercial real estate is clearly shown by the role it plays, worldwide, in the sustainability of economic activities, with a substantial global impact when measured in monetary terms. This study responds to an important gap in the built environment and turnaround literature relating to the likelihood of a successful distressed commercial property financial recovery. The present research effort addressed the absence of empirical evidence by identifying a number of important factors that influence the likelihood of a successful distressed, commercial property financial recovery. Once the important factors that increase the likelihood of recovery have been determined, the results can be used as a basis for turnaround strategies concerning property investors who invest in distressed opportunities. A theoretical turnaround model concerning properties in distress, would be of interest to ā€˜opportunistic investingā€™ yield-hungry investors targeting real estate transactions involving ā€˜turnaroundā€™ potential. Against this background, the main research problem investigated in the present research effort was as follows: Determine the important factors that would increase the likelihood of a successful distressed commercial property financial recovery. A proposed theoretical model was constructed and empirically tested through a questionnaire distributed physically and electronically to a sample of real estate practitioners from across the globe, and who had all been involved, directly or indirectly, with reviving distressed properties. An explanation was provided to respondents of how the questionnaire was developed and how it would be administered. The demographic information pertaining to the 391 respondents was analysed and summarised. The statistical analysis performed to ensure the validity and reliability of the results, was explained to respondents, together with a detailed description of the covariance structural equation modelling method used to verify the proposed theoretical conceptual model. vi The independent variables of the present research effort comprised; Obsolescence Identification, Capital Improvements Feasibility, Tenant Mix, Triple Net Leases, Concessions, Property Management, Contracts, Business Analysis, Debt Renegotiation, Cost-Cutting, Market Analysis, Strategic Planning and Demography, while the dependent variable was The Perceived Likelihood of a Distressed Commercial Property Financial Recovery. After analysis of the findings, a revised model was then proposed and assessed. Both validity and reliability were assessed and resulted in the following factors that potentially influence the dependent variables; Strategy, Concessions, Tenant Mix, Debt Restructuring, Demography, Analyse Alternatives, Capital Improvements Feasibility, Property Management and Net Leases while, after analysis, the dependent variable was replaced by two dependent variables; The Likelihood of a Distressed Property Turnaround and The Likelihood of a Distressed Property Financial Recovery. The results showed that Strategy (comprising of items from Strategic Planning, Business Analysis, Obsolescence Identification and Property Management) and Concessions (comprising of items from Concessions and Triple Net Leases) had a positive influence on both the dependent variables. Property Management (comprising of items from Business Analysis, Property Management, Capital Improvements Feasibility and Tenant Mix) had a positive influence on Financial Turnaround variable while Capital Improvements Feasibility (comprising of items from Capital Improvements Feasibility, Obsolescence Identification and Property Management) had a negative influence on both. Demography (comprising of items only from Demography) had a negative influence on the Financial Recovery variable. The balance of the relationships were depicted as non-significant. The present research effort presents important actions that can be used to influence the turnaround and recovery of distressed real estate. The literature had indicated reasons to recover distressed properties as having wide-ranging economic consequences for the broader communities and the countries in which they reside. The turnaround of distressed properties will not only present financial rewards for opportunistic investors but will have positive effects on the greater community and economy and, thus, social and economic stability. Vii With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, issues with climate change and sustainability, global demographic shifts, changing user requirements, shifts in technology, the threat of obsolescence, urbanisation, globalisation, geo-political tensions, shifting global order, new trends and different generational expectations, it is becoming more apparent that the threat of distressed, abandoned and derelict properties is here to stay, and which will present future opportunities for turnaround, distressed property owners, as well as future worries for urban authorities and municipalities dealing with urban decay.     COVID-19 Booster Vaccine Acceptance in Ethnic Minority Individuals in the United Kingdom: a mixed-methods study using Protection Motivation Theory

    Background: Uptake of the COVID-19 booster vaccine among ethnic minority individuals has been lower than in the general population. However, there is little research examining the psychosocial factors that contribute to COVID-19 booster vaccine hesitancy in this population.Aim: Our study aimed to determine which factors predicted COVID-19 vaccination intention in minority ethnic individuals in Middlesbrough, using Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) and COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs, in addition to demographic variables.Method: We used a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected using an online survey. Qualitative data were collected using semi-structured interviews. 64 minority ethnic individuals (33 females, 31 males; mage = 31.06, SD = 8.36) completed the survey assessing PMT constructs, COVID-19conspiracy beliefs and demographic factors. 42.2% had received the booster vaccine, 57.6% had not. 16 survey respondents were interviewed online to gain further insight into factors affecting booster vaccineacceptance.Results: Multiple regression analysis showed that perceived susceptibility to COVID-19 was a significant predictor of booster vaccination intention, with higher perceived susceptibility being associated with higher intention to get the booster. Additionally, COVID-19 conspiracy beliefs significantly predictedintention to get the booster vaccine, with higher conspiracy beliefs being associated with lower intention to get the booster dose. Thematic analysis of the interview data showed that barriers to COVID-19 booster vaccination included time constraints and a perceived lack of practical support in the event ofexperiencing side effects. Furthermore, there was a lack of confidence in the vaccine, with individuals seeing it as lacking sufficient research. Participants also spoke of medical mistrust due to historical events involving medical experimentation on minority ethnic individuals.Conclusion: PMT and conspiracy beliefs predict COVID-19 booster vaccination in minority ethnic individuals. To help increase vaccine uptake, community leaders need to be involved in addressing peopleā€™s concerns, misassumptions, and lack of confidence in COVID-19 vaccination

    Dynamic life of a microtubule: From birth, growth and stabilization to damage and destruction

    Microtubules are one of the major types of cytoskeletal filaments in cells. They are very dynamic polymers composed of Ī±Ī²-tubulin dimers arranged longitudinally in head-to-tail fashion as well as laterally to assemble 13-protofilament hollow cylindrical tubes. The incorporation of GTP-bound Ī±Ī²-tubulin dimers generates a fast growing plus end exposing Ī²-tubulin and a slow growing minus end exposing Ī±-tubulin. In cells, microtubules are assembled de novo from a template, called Ī³-TuRC, which interacts with Ī±-tubulin. Microtubules can either remain capped by Ī³-TuRC and anchored to the microtubule-organizing centers (MTOCs) or be released if they are cut by microtubule severing enzymes like katanin. The release of microtubules from MTOC generates free minus ends, which are then stabilized by minus-end binding proteins called CAMSAPs. However, the plus ends remain very dynamic and undergo transitions from growth to shrinkage, termed ā€œcatastrophesā€, and the opposite transitions termed ā€œrescuesā€. Numerous microtubule regulatory proteins act at the plus ends, minus ends and the microtubule shafts connecting the two ends to control the organization and density of cellular microtubule networks. In this thesis, we focused on each of these aspects and explored the dynamic life of microtubules by reconstituting these processes in vitro using purified proteins. We first focused on the birth and growth of microtubules. We reconstituted microtubule nucleation using purified Ī³-TuRC and microtubule regulatory proteins and showed that CDK5RAP2, CLASP2 and chTOG promoted microtubule nucleation from Ī³-TuRC. We discovered that CAMSAPs can bind to Ī³-TuRC-capped microtubule minus ends and displace Ī³-TuRC from these ends, generating free and stable microtubule minus ends. Furthermore, we found out that CDK5RAP2, but not CLASP2 or chTOG, can inhibit CAMSAP binding and microtubule release. We propose that the destiny of a microtubule depends on the type of protein complex that activates its nucleation. We then described a mechanism for stabilization of microtubule lattice by TRIM46, a neuronal protein, which can bundle parallel microtubules and promote microtubule rescues within these bundles. We also revealed that Ankyrin-G, a scaffold protein, can recruit TRIM46-stabilized microtubule bundles to the axonal membrane to drive the assembly of the axon initial segment in neurons. We also uncovered a new role of CLASP2 as a microtubule repair factor participating in microtubule maintenance. We demonstrated that CLASP2, an anti-catastrophe factor, can promote complete repair of damaged microtubule lattices by inhibiting microtubule depolymerization and promoting tube closure at the damage sites, causing lattice renewal. Finally, we described a three-protein module involving katanin, CAMSAPs, and WDR47 that can regulate microtubule polymer mass and minus-end stability. We showed that katanin can cut and amplify CAMSAP2/3-stabilized microtubule minus ends. WDR47 can inhibit the binding of katanin to CAMSAP2/3-stabilized minus ends and protect them from severing. The presence of WDR47 shifts the balance from microtubule amplification to minus-end growth regulation. To conclude, we obtained mechanistic insights into the regulation of microtubule nucleation, minus-end dynamics, lattice stabilization and maintenance, microtubule number and the interplay between microtubule regulatory proteins. These insights will help to understand how microtubule arrays are organized in cells

    Cultivate Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Methods to Measure Markers of Health and Translate to Large Scale Cohort Studies

    Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an indispensable tool in healthcare and research, with a growing demand for its services. The appeal of MRI stems from its non-ionizing radiation nature, ability to generate high-resolution images of internal organs and structures without invasive procedures, and capacity to provide quantitative assessments of tissue properties such as ectopic fat, body composition, and organ volume. All without long term side effects. Nine published papers are submitted which show the cultivation of quantitative measures of ectopic fat within the liver and pancreas using MRI, and the process of validating whole-body composition and organ volume measurements. All these techniques have been translated into large-scale studies to improve health measurements in large population cohorts. Translating this work into large-scale studies, including the use of artificial intelligence, is included. Additionally, an evaluation accompanies these published studies, appraising the evolution of these quantitative MRI techniques from the conception to their application in large cohort studies. Finally, this appraisal provides a summary of future work on crowdsourcing of ground truth training data to facilitate its use in wider applications of artificial intelligence.In conclusion, this body of work presents a portfolio of evidence to fulfil the requirements of a PhD by published works at the University of Salford

The article is meant to be read in a nonlinear fashion and used as a point of reference by a diverse pool of readers: academics, researchers, students, and practitioners. The entries within the methods and applications sections are presented in alphabetical order. The authors dedicate this paper to the 2023 Turkey/Syria earthquake victims.
