    On the rate-distortion performance and computational efficiency of the Karhunen-Loeve transform for lossy data compression

    We examine the rate-distortion performance and computational complexity of linear transforms for lossy data compression. The goal is to better understand the performance/complexity tradeoffs associated with using the Karhunen-Loeve transform (KLT) and its fast approximations. Since the optimal transform for transform coding is unknown in general, we investigate the performance penalties associated with using the KLT by examining cases where the KLT fails, developing a new transform that corrects the KLT's failures in those examples, and then empirically testing the performance difference between this new transform and the KLT. Experiments demonstrate that while the worst KLT can yield transform coding performance at least 3 dB worse than that of alternative block transforms, the performance penalty associated with using the KLT on real data sets seems to be significantly smaller, giving at most 0.5 dB difference in our experiments. The KLT and its fast variations studied here range in complexity requirements from O(n^2) to O(n log n) in coding vectors of dimension n. We empirically investigate the rate-distortion performance tradeoffs associated with traversing this range of options. For example, an algorithm with complexity O(n^3/2) and memory O(n) gives 0.4 dB performance loss relative to the full KLT in our image compression experiment

    Machine learning for ultrafast X-ray diffraction patterns on large-scale GPU clusters

    The classical method of determining the atomic structure of complex molecules by analyzing diffraction patterns is currently undergoing drastic developments. Modern techniques for producing extremely bright and coherent X-ray lasers allow a beam of streaming particles to be intercepted and hit by an ultrashort high energy X-ray beam. Through machine learning methods the data thus collected can be transformed into a three-dimensional volumetric intensity map of the particle itself. The computational complexity associated with this problem is very high such that clusters of data parallel accelerators are required. We have implemented a distributed and highly efficient algorithm for inversion of large collections of diffraction patterns targeting clusters of hundreds of GPUs. With the expected enormous amount of diffraction data to be produced in the foreseeable future, this is the required scale to approach real time processing of data at the beam site. Using both real and synthetic data we look at the scaling properties of the application and discuss the overall computational viability of this exciting and novel imaging technique

    Ultra high definition video decoding with motion JPEG XR using the GPU

    Many applications require real-time decoding of highresolution video pictures, for example, quick editing of video sequences in video editing applications. To increase decoding speed, parallelism can be exploited, yet, block-based image and video coding standards are difficult to decode in parallel because of the high number of dependencies between blocks. This paper investigates the parallel decoding capabilities of the new JPEG XR image coding standard for use on the massively-parallel architecture of the GPU. The potential of parallelism of the hierarchical frequency coding scheme used in the standard is addressed and a parallel decoding scheme is described suitable for real-time decoding of Ultra High Definition (4320p) Motion JPEG XR video sequences. Our results show a decoding speed of up to 46 frames per second for Ultra High Definition (4320p) sequences with high-dynamic range (32-bit/ 4: 2: 0) luma and chroma components

    Experimental campaign tests on ultra micro gas turbines, fuel supply comparison and optimization

    The increasing demand for miniaturized radio-controlled vehicles inspired the following research. The uses of these unmanned miniaturized/micro vehicles range from aero-modeling to drones for urban control and military applications too. The common characteristic of these vehicles is the need for a light and compact propulsion system. The radio-controlled (RC) turbines for modeling are ideally suited for this purpose, guaranteeing the necessary thrust with compactness and lightness. This device is a miniaturized turbojet, and it is generally composed of three basic elements: compressor, combustion chamber and turbine. The main goal of the paper is to evaluate the turbojet performance for considering the possibility of its use as a range extender in a hybrid vehicle. Considering the total volume constraints, it will be important to evaluate the specific fuel consumption. Also from the environmental point of view, the possibility of feeding the device with gas has been considered and, consequently, the needed device modifications performed. The test bench has been realized and assembled at the University Department Laboratory. Several different experimental configurations are reproduced and reported here, to obtain performance maps. The experiments results have been compared to previous tests results, as well as numerical simulations. Therefore, it has been possible to make a comparison between the two different fuels. The results show that this device can be used as a range extender for a hybrid vehicle. Moreover, the various tests have shown that, acting on the control unit, it is possible to feed the device with gas (mixture of propane and butane), obtaining a further benefit from the economic point of view. Surely, an in-depth study of the turbine management logic would produce a further advantage in terms of fuel consumption

    Critical joints in large composite aircraft structure

    A program was conducted at Douglas Aircraft Company to develop the technology for critical structural joints of composite wing structure that meets design requirements for a 1990 commercial transport aircraft. The prime objective of the program was to demonstrate the ability to reliably predict the strength of large bolted composite joints. Ancillary testing of 180 specimens generated data on strength and load-deflection characteristics which provided input to the joint analysis. Load-sharing between fasteners in multirow bolted joints was computed by the nonlinear analysis program A4EJ. This program was used to predict strengths of 20 additional large subcomponents representing strips from a wing root chordwise splice. In most cases, the predictions were accurate to within a few percent of the test results. In some cases, the observed mode of failure was different than anticipated. The highlight of the subcomponent testing was the consistent ability to achieve gross-section failure strains close to 0.005. That represents a considerable improvement over the state of the art
