Code designs for MIMO broadcast channels
Recent information-theoretic results show the optimality of dirty-paper coding (DPC) in achieving the full capacity region of the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC). This paper presents a DPC based code design for BCs. We consider the case in which there is an individual rate/signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraint for each user. For a fixed transmitter power, we choose the linear transmit precoding matrix such that the SINRs at users are uniformly maximized, thus ensuring the best bit-error rate performance. We start with Cover's simplest two-user Gaussian BC and present a coding scheme that operates 1.44 dB from the boundary of the capacity region at the rate of one bit per real sample (b/s) for each user. We then extend the coding strategy to a two-user MIMO Gaussian BC with two transmit antennas at the base-station and develop the first limit-approaching code design using nested turbo codes for DPC. At the rate of 1 b/s for each user, our design operates 1.48 dB from the capacity region boundary. We also consider the performance of our scheme over a slow fading BC. For two transmit antennas, simulation results indicate a performance loss of only 1.4 dB, 1.64 dB and 1.99 dB from the theoretical limit in terms of the total transmission power for the two, three and four user case, respectively
Cores of Cooperative Games in Information Theory
Cores of cooperative games are ubiquitous in information theory, and arise
most frequently in the characterization of fundamental limits in various
scenarios involving multiple users. Examples include classical settings in
network information theory such as Slepian-Wolf source coding and multiple
access channels, classical settings in statistics such as robust hypothesis
testing, and new settings at the intersection of networking and statistics such
as distributed estimation problems for sensor networks. Cooperative game theory
allows one to understand aspects of all of these problems from a fresh and
unifying perspective that treats users as players in a game, sometimes leading
to new insights. At the heart of these analyses are fundamental dualities that
have been long studied in the context of cooperative games; for information
theoretic purposes, these are dualities between information inequalities on the
one hand and properties of rate, capacity or other resource allocation regions

Amplify-and-Forward in Wireless Relay Networks
A general class of wireless relay networks with a single source-destination
pair is considered. Intermediate nodes in the network employ an
amplify-and-forward scheme to relay their input signals. In this case the
overall input-output channel from the source via the relays to the destination
effectively behaves as an intersymbol interference channel with colored noise.
Unlike previous work we formulate the problem of the maximum achievable rate in
this setting as an optimization problem with no assumption on the network size,
topology, and received signal-to-noise ratio. Previous work considered only
scenarios wherein relays use all their power to amplify their received signals.
We demonstrate that this may not always maximize the maximal achievable rate in
amplify-and-forward relay networks. The proposed formulation allows us to not
only recover known results on the performance of the amplify-and-forward
schemes for some simple relay networks but also characterize the performance of
more complex amplify-and-forward relay networks which cannot be addressed in a
straightforward manner using existing approaches.
Using cut-set arguments, we derive simple upper bounds on the capacity of
general wireless relay networks. Through various examples, we show that a large
class of amplify-and-forward relay networks can achieve rates within a constant

On Joint Source-Channel Coding for Correlated Sources Over Multiple-Access Relay Channels
We study the transmission of correlated sources over discrete memoryless (DM)
multiple-access-relay channels (MARCs), in which both the relay and the
destination have access to side information arbitrarily correlated with the
sources. As the optimal transmission scheme is an open problem, in this work we
propose a new joint source-channel coding scheme based on a novel combination
of the correlation preserving mapping (CPM) technique with Slepian-Wolf (SW)
source coding, and obtain the corresponding sufficient conditions. The proposed
coding scheme is based on the decode-and-forward strategy, and utilizes CPM for
encoding information simultaneously to the relay and the destination, whereas
the cooperation information from the relay is encoded via SW source coding. It
is shown that there are cases in which the new scheme strictly outperforms the
schemes available in the literature. This is the first instance of a
source-channel code that uses CPM for encoding information to two different
nodes (relay and destination). In addition to sufficient conditions, we present
three different sets of single-letter necessary conditions for reliable
transmission of correlated sources over DM MARCs. The newly derived conditions
