An Interactive Zoo Guide: A Case Study of Collaborative Learning
Real Industry Projects and team work can have a great impact on student
learning but providing these activities requires significant commitment from
academics. It requires several years planning implementing to create a
collaborative learning environment that mimics the real world ICT (Information
and Communication Technology) industry workplace. In this project, staff from
all the three faculties, namely the Faculty of Health, Engineering and Science,
Faculty of Arts, Education and Human Development, and Faculty of Business and
Law in higher education work together to establish a detailed project
management plan and to develop the unit guidelines for participating students.
The proposed project brings together students from business, multimedia and
computer science degrees studying their three project-based units within each
faculty to work on a relatively large IT project with our industry partner,
Melbourne Zoo. This paper presents one multimedia software project accomplished
by one of the multi-discipline student project teams. The project was called
'Interactive ZooOz Guide' and developed on a GPS-enabled PDA device in 2007.
The developed program allows its users to navigate through the Zoo via an
interactive map and provides multimedia information of animals on hotspots at
the 'Big Cats' section of the Zoo so that it enriches user experience at the
Zoo. A recent development in zoo applications is also reviewed. This paper is
also intended to encourage academia to break boundaries to enhance students'

Putting PS Into IS: Developing Professional Skills And Enhancing Employability Through Curriculum Initiatives In Information Systems
Debate about the content of Information Systems (IS) in undergraduate courses often involves balancing the individual skills-based components within a degree, the broader discipline-specific knowledge required and more generic IS skills. Curriculum discussions invariably concern the use of specific software packages, programming languages or development methodologies and seek to answer the question of how to prepare students for the exponential rate of technological change that make the IS profession both exciting and challenging. In recent times, another distinctive set of skills has dominated curriculum discussion – Professional Skills. The need for profession-specific employability skills has been influenced by changing funding models of the Commonwealth government to Australian universities. Australian universities are committed to both developing graduate capabilities and enhancing graduate transition to work and curriculum aims to reflect those aims. This paper reports on curriculum initiatives within the Bachelor of Business (Information Systems) at Victoria University, Melbourne, and focuses on one mandatory unit of study, BCO 1102 Information Systems for Business, to examine strategies for developing Professional Skills for IS students. The paper draws on student evaluations of the unit’s efforts to develop communication and team skills and concludes with some suggestions for future directions
Engaging industry: Embedding professional learning in the business curriculum
Professional learning has become a feature of business curricula in universities throughout Australia and around the world. ‘Professional learning’ is often used to denote educational programs that are explicitly linked to industry and professional bodies through industry placements, industry projects and teaching approaches that highlight contemporary industry issues. Professional learning encompasses the skills, qualities and attributes that are required by a profession and the processes through which those skills are learnt: that is, the methods of teaching – case studies, role plays, field trips, work placement and the like. Professional learning encourages deep learning in relation to the student’s future profession, and includes industry engagement, work‐integrated learning and authentic learning environments..
Alternatives to Industrial Work Placement at Technological University City
In the current economic crisis, higher education graduates need transferable professional skills more than ever. They need resourcefulness, an ability to work reflectively, a sense of civic awareness and an impressive curriculum vitae. This case study analyses how Technological University City’s Programme for Students Learning With Communities provides cost-effective, sustainable solutions to these needs, offering an alternative to industrial work placement. Community-based learning and research involve collaboration between staff and/or students and community partners to design real-life, course-based projects which meet the learning needs of the students and those of the community. The programme not only enriches the curriculum; it also builds links with communities and brings additional resources to the educational institution, while allowing the institution to fulfil its three main roles of teaching, research and outreach, simultaneously
Computing Graduate Employability: Sharing Practice
Computing is one of the largest subject areas in Higher Education, and is taught in almost every institution, graduating around 9,000 students each year. However Computing graduates are recorded as having the highest unemployment rates for all subjects (11% for Computing compared with an overall rate of 7% for graduates of all subjects). This new report, jointly published by the Council of Professors and Heads of Computing (CPHC) and Higher Education Academy (HEA) highlights the depth, complexity and richness of employability practices in the sector, and aims to share those practices more widely. The report places practice in a comparative context so that departments may learn what works from each other. It draws on research gathered from over fifty Higher Education institutions in a series of workshops, focus groups and interviews. Throughout, participants’ voices are given priority, with the report structured around the common employability challenges faced by academics. Within that structure, clusters of similar practice (those which appear in several institutions) are presented, together with a series of showcases providing rich detail of specific interventions.
Challenges discussed within the report’s three themes of ‘Addressing Employability’, ‘Curriculum Issues’ and ‘Placements’ include ‘the employability agenda’, ‘student engagement’, ‘curriculum design’, ‘reaching “tipping point”’ and ‘finding alternatives to the “sandwich year”’ and are balanced throughout with a ‘View from Employers’.
Clusters identify good practice from ‘hackathons’, competitions, mentoring, ‘compulsion’, an employer-led curriculum, industry-focused projects and placement preparation, application, monitoring, return, assessment and alternatives. Showcases highlight practice in ‘auditing employability’, ‘dedicated placement support’, ‘multiplicity of opportunities’, ‘short placement modules’, ‘think future’, ‘summer internships’ and ‘transition week’ from the universities of York, Kent, London South Bank, West of Scotland, Edinburgh Napier, Southampton and Brunel London, amongst other
Every student counts: promoting numeracy and enhancing employability
This three-year project investigated factors that influence the development of undergraduates’ numeracy skills, with a view to identifying ways to improve them and thereby enhance student employability. Its aims and objectives were to ascertain: the generic numeracy skills in which employers expect their graduate recruits to be competent and the extent to which employers are using numeracy tests as part of graduate recruitment processes; the numeracy skills developed within a diversity of academic disciplines;
the prevalence of factors that influence undergraduates’ development of their numeracy skills; how the development of numeracy skills might be better supported within undergraduate curricula; and the extra-curricular support necessary to enhance undergraduates’ numeracy skills
