    Scheduling to minimize power consumption using submodular functions

Here each processor has an arbitrary specified power consumption to be turned on for each possible time interval, and each job has a specified list of time interval/processor pairs during which it could be scheduled. (A processor need not be in use for an entire interval it is turned on.) If there is a feasible schedule, our algorithm finds a feasible schedule with total power usage within an O(log n) factor of optimal, where n is the number of jobs. (Even in a simple setting with one processor, the problem is Set-Cover hard.) If not all jobs can be scheduled and each job has a specified value, then our algorithm finds a schedule of value at least (1 - c)Z and power usage within an O(log(1/E)) factor of the optimal schedule of value at least Z, for any specified Z and c > 0. At the foundation of our work is a general framework for logarithmic approximation to maximizing any submodular function subject to budget constraints. We also introduce the online version of this scheduling problem, and show its relation to the classical secretary problem. In order to obtain constant competitive algorithms for this online version, we study the secretary problem with submodular utility function. We focus on the linear programming model for matroids and linear assignment problems with Monge property, on general linear programs, probabilistic analysis for linear assignment and makespan minimization, and on-line algorithms for linear and non-linear assignment problems

    Streaming Algorithms for Submodular Function Maximization

    We consider the problem of maximizing a nonnegative submodular set function f:2N→R+f:2^{\mathcal{N}} \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^+ subject to a pp-matchoid constraint in the single-pass streaming setting. Previous work in this context has considered streaming algorithms for modular functions and monotone submodular functions. The main result is for submodular functions that are {\em non-monotone}. We describe deterministic and randomized algorithms that obtain a Ω(1p)\Omega(\frac{1}{p})-approximation using O(klog⁥k)O(k \log k)-space, where kk is an upper bound on the cardinality of the desired set. The model assumes value oracle access to ff and membership oracles for the matroids defining the pp-matchoid constraint.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, extended abstract to appear in ICALP 201

    Boundary classes for graph problems involving non-local properties

    We continue the study of boundary classes for NP-hard problems and focus on seven NP-hard graph problems involving non-local properties: HAMILTONIAN CYCLE, HAMILTONIAN CYCLE THROUGH SPECIFIED EDGE, HAMILTONIAN PATH, FEEDBACK VERTEX SET, CONNECTED VERTEX COVER, CONNECTED DOMINATING SET and GRAPH VCCON DIMENSION. Our main result is the determination of the first boundary class for FEEDBACK VERTEX SET. We also determine boundary classes for HAMILTONIAN CYCLE THROUGH SPECIFIED EDGE and HAMILTONIAN PATH and give some insights on the structure of some boundary classes for the remaining problems

    Parameterized Complexity of Conflict-Free Matchings and Paths

    An input to a conflict-free variant of a classical problem Gamma, called Conflict-Free Gamma, consists of an instance I of Gamma coupled with a graph H, called the conflict graph. A solution to Conflict-Free Gamma in (I,H) is a solution to I in Gamma, which is also an independent set in H. In this paper, we study conflict-free variants of Maximum Matching and Shortest Path, which we call Conflict-Free Matching (CF-Matching) and Conflict-Free Shortest Path (CF-SP), respectively. We show that both CF-Matching and CF-SP are W[1]-hard, when parameterized by the solution size. Moreover, W[1]-hardness for CF-Matching holds even when the input graph where we want to find a matching is itself a matching, and W[1]-hardness for CF-SP holds for conflict graph being a unit-interval graph. Next, we study these problems with restriction on the conflict graphs. We give FPT algorithms for CF-Matching when the conflict graph is chordal. Also, we give FPT algorithms for both CF-Matching and CF-SP, when the conflict graph is d-degenerate. Finally, we design FPT algorithms for variants of CF-Matching and CF-SP, where the conflicting conditions are given by a (representable) matroid

    A Tutte decomposition for matrices and bimatroids

    AbstractWe develop a Tutte decomposition theory for matrices and their combinatorial abstractions, bimatroids. As in the graph or matroid case, this theory is based on a deletion–contraction decomposition. The contribution from the deletion, derived by an inclusion–exclusion argument, consists of three terms. With one more term contributed from the contraction, the decomposition has four terms in general. There are universal decomposition invariants, one of them being a corank–nullity polynomial. Under a simple change of variables, the corank–nullity polynomial equals a weighted characteristic polynomial. This gives an analog of an identity of Tutte. Applications to counting and critical problems on matrices and graphs are given
