    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization

    Digital filters are an important part of digital signal processing systems. Digital filters are divided into finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters and infinite impulse response (IIR) digital filters according to the length of their impulse responses. An FIR digital filter is easier to implement than an IIR digital filter because of its linear phase and stability properties. In terms of the stability of an IIR digital filter, the poles generated in the denominator are subject to stability constraints. In addition, a digital filter can be categorized as one-dimensional or multi-dimensional digital filters according to the dimensions of the signal to be processed. However, for the design of IIR digital filters, traditional design methods have the disadvantages of easy to fall into a local optimum and slow convergence. The Teaching-Learning-Based optimization (TLBO) algorithm has been proven beneficial in a wide range of engineering applications. To this end, this dissertation focusses on using TLBO and its improved algorithms to design five types of digital filters, which include linear phase FIR digital filters, multiobjective general FIR digital filters, multiobjective IIR digital filters, two-dimensional (2-D) linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters. Among them, linear phase FIR digital filters, 2-D linear phase FIR digital filters, and 2-D nonlinear phase FIR digital filters use single-objective type of TLBO algorithms to optimize; multiobjective general FIR digital filters use multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm to optimize; and multiobjective IIR digital filters use MOTLBO with Euclidean distance to optimize. The design results of the five types of filter designs are compared to those obtained by other state-of-the-art design methods. In this dissertation, two major improvements are proposed to enhance the performance of the standard TLBO algorithm. The first improvement is to apply a gradient-based learning to replace the TLBO learner phase to reduce approximation error(s) and CPU time without sacrificing design accuracy for linear phase FIR digital filter design. The second improvement is to incorporate Manhattan distance to simplify the procedure of the multiobjective non-dominated TLBO (MOTLBO) algorithm for general FIR digital filter design. The design results obtained by the two improvements have demonstrated their efficiency and effectiveness

    Minimax passband group delay nonlinear FIR filter design without imposing desired phase response

    In this paper, a nonlinear phase finite impulse response (FIR) filter is designed without imposing a desired phase response. The maximum passband group delay of the filter is minimized subject to a positivity constraint on the passband group delay response of the filter as well as a specification on the maximum absolute difference between the desired magnitude square response and the designed magnitude square response over both the passband and the stopband. This filter design problem is a nonsmooth functional ine-quality constrained optimization problem. To tackle this problem, first, the one norm functional inequality constraint of the optimization problem is approximated by a smooth function so that the nonsmooth functional inequality con-strained optimization problem is approximated as a noncon-vex functional inequality constrained optimization problem. Then, a modified filled function method is applied for find-ing the global minimum of the nonconvex optimization prob-lem. Computer numerical simulation results show that our designed nonlinear phase peak constrained FIR filter could achieve lower minimum passband group delay than those of existing designs

    On the design of real and complex fir filters with flatness and peak error constraints using semidefinite programming

    This paper studies the problem of designing digital finite duration impulse response (FIR) filters with prescribed flatness and peak error constraints using semidefinite programming (SDP). SDP is a powerful convex optimization method, where linear and convex quadratic inequality constraints can readily be incorporated. This property is utilized for the optimal minimax and least squares (LS) design of linear-phase and low-delay FIR filters with prescribed magnitude flatness and peak design error, which are formulated as a set of linear equality and convex quadratic inequality constraints, respectively. A method for structurally imposing these equality constraints in the SDP formulation is also proposed. Using these results, the design approach is further extended to the design of constrained complex coefficient FIR filters and variable digital filters (VDFs). Design examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.published_or_final_versio

    Digital Filter Design Using Improved Artificial Bee Colony Algorithms

    Digital filters are often used in digital signal processing applications. The design objective of a digital filter is to find the optimal set of filter coefficients, which satisfies the desired specifications of magnitude and group delay responses. Evolutionary algorithms are population-based meta-heuristic algorithms inspired by the biological behaviors of species. Compared to gradient-based optimization algorithms such as steepest descent and Newton’s like methods, these bio-inspired algorithms have the advantages of not getting stuck at local optima and being independent of the starting point in the solution space. The limitations of evolutionary algorithms include the presence of control parameters, problem specific tuning procedure, premature convergence and slower convergence rate. The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm is a swarm-based search meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the foraging behaviors of honey bee colonies, with the benefit of a relatively fewer control parameters. In its original form, the ABC algorithm has certain limitations such as low convergence rate, and insufficient balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations. In this dissertation, an ABC-AMR algorithm is proposed by incorporating an adaptive modification rate (AMR) into the original ABC algorithm to increase convergence rate by adjusting the balance between exploration and exploitation in the search equations through an adaptive determination of the number of parameters to be updated in every iteration. A constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is also developed for solving constrained optimization problems.There are many real-world problems requiring simultaneous optimizations of more than one conflicting objectives. Multiobjective (MO) optimization produces a set of feasible solutions called the Pareto front instead of a single optimum solution. For multiobjective optimization, if a decision maker’s preferences can be incorporated during the optimization process, the search process can be confined to the region of interest instead of searching the entire region. In this dissertation, two algorithms are developed for such incorporation. The first one is a reference-point-based MOABC algorithm in which a decision maker’s preferences are included in the optimization process as the reference point. The second one is a physical-programming-based MOABC algorithm in which physical programming is used for setting the region of interest of a decision maker. In this dissertation, the four developed algorithms are applied to solve digital filter design problems. The ABC-AMR algorithm is used to design Types 3 and 4 linear phase FIR differentiators, and the results are compared to those obtained by the original ABC algorithm, three improved ABC algorithms, and the Parks-McClellan algorithm. The constrained ABC-AMR algorithm is applied to the design of sparse Type 1 linear phase FIR filters of filter orders 60, 70 and 80, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. The reference-point-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design of asymmetric lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop FIR filters, and the results are compared to those obtained by the preference-based multiobjective differential evolution algorithm. The physical-programming-based multiobjective ABC algorithm is used to design IIR lowpass, highpass and bandpass filters, and the results are compared to three state-of-the-art design methods. Based on the obtained design results, the four design algorithms are shown to be competitive as compared to the state-of-the-art design methods

    Design and multiplierless realization of digital synthesis filters for hybrid-filter-bank A/D converters

    This paper studies the optimal least squares and minimax design and realization of digital synthesis filters for hybrid-filter-bank analog-to-digltal converters (HFB ADCs) to meet a given spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). The problem for designing finite-impulse-response synthesis filters is formulated as a second-order cone-programming problem, which is convex and allows linear and quadratic constraints such as peak aliasing error to be incorporated. The fixed coefficients of the designed synthesis filters are efficiently implemented using sum-of-power-of-two (SOPOT) coefficients, while the internal word length used for each intermediate data is minimized using geometric programming. The main sources of error are analyzed, and a new formula of SFDR in terms of these errors is derived. The effects of component variations of analog analysis filters on the HFB ADC are also addressed by means of two new robust HFB ADC design algorithms based on stochastic uncertainty and worst case uncertainty models. Design results show that the proposed approach offers more flexibility and better performance than conventional methods in achieving a given SFDR and that the robust design algorithms are more robust to parameter uncertainties than the nominal design in which the uncertainties are not taken into account. © 2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    The design and multiplier-less realization of software radio receivers with reduced system delay

    This paper studies the design and multiplier-less realization of a new software radio receiver (SRR) with reduced system delay. It employs low-delay finite-impulse response (FIR) and digital allpass filters to effectively reduce the system delay of the multistage decimators in SRRs. The optimal least-square and minimax designs of these low-delay FIR and allpass-based filters are formulated as a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem, which allows zero magnitude constraint at ω = π to be incorporated readily as additional linear matrix inequalities (LMIs). By implementing the sampling rate converter (SRC) using a variable digital filter (VDF) immediately after the integer decimators, the needs for an expensive programmable FIR filter in the traditional SRR is avoided. A new method for the optimal minimax design of this VDF-based SRC using SDP is also proposed and compared with traditional weight least squares method. Other implementation issues including the multiplier-less and digital signal processor (DSP) realizations of the SRR and the generation of the clock signal in the SRC are also studied. Design results show that the system delay and implementation complexities (especially in terms of high-speed variable multipliers) of the proposed architecture are considerably reduced as compared with conventional approaches. © 2004 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    On the design and multiplierless realization of perfect reconstruction triplet-based FIR filter banks and wavelet bases

    This paper proposes new methods for the efficient design and realization of perfect reconstruction (PR) two-channel finite-impulse response (FIR) triplet filter banks (FBs) and wavelet bases. It extends the linear-phase FIR triplet FBs of Ansari et al. to include FIR triplet FBs with lower system delay and a prescribed order of K regularity. The design problem using either the minimax error or least-squares criteria is formulated as a semidefinite programming problem, which is a very flexible framework to incorporate linear and convex quadratic constraints. The K regularity conditions are also expressed as a set of linear equality constraints in the variables to be optimized and they are structurally imposed into the design problem by eliminating the redundant variables. The design method is applicable to linear-phase as well as low-delay triplet FBs. Design examples are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, it was found that the analysis and synthesis filters of the triplet FB have a more symmetric frequency responses. This property is exploited to construct a class of PR M-channel uniform FBs and wavelets with M = 2 L, where L is a positive integer, using a particular tree structure. The filter lengths of the two-channel FBs down the tree are approximately reduced by a factor of two at each level or stage, while the transition bandwidths are successively increased by the same factor. Because of the downsampling operations, the frequency responses of the final analysis filters closely resemble those in a uniform FB with identical transition bandwidth. This triplet-based uniform M-channel FB has very low design complexity and the PR condition and K regularity conditions are structurally imposed. Furthermore, it has considerably lower arithmetic complexity and system delay than conventional tree structure using identical FB at all levels. The multiplierless realization of these FBs using sum-of-power-of-two (SOPOT) coefficients and multiplier block is also studied. © 2004 IEEE.published_or_final_versio
