A New Architecture for Application-aware Cognitive Multihop Wireless Networks
In this article, we propose a new architecture for AC-MWN. Cognitive radio is a technique to adaptively use the spectrum so that the resource can be used more efficiently in a low-cost way. A multihop wireless network can be deployed quickly and flexibly without fixed infrastructure. In our proposed new architecture, we study backbone routing schemes with network cognition, and a routing scheme with network coding and spectrum adaptation. A testbed is implemented to test the proposed schemes for AC-MWN. In addition to basic measurements, we implement a video streaming application based on the proposed AC-MWN architecture using cognitive radios. Preliminary results demonstrate that the proposed AC-MWN is applicable, and is valuable for future low-cost and flexible communication networks
Effective Scheduling for Coded Distributed Storage in Wireless Sensor Networks
A distributed storage approach is proposed to access data reliably and to cope with node failures in wireless sensor networks. This approach is based on random linear network coding in combination with a scheduling algorithm based on backpressure. Upper bounds are provided on the maximum rate at which data can be reliably stored. Moreover, it is shown that the backpressure algorithm allows to operate the network in a decentralized fashion for any rate below this maximum
Dynamic algorithms for multicast with intra-session network coding
The problem of multiple multicast sessions with
intra-session network coding in time-varying networks is considered.
The network-layer capacity region of input rates that can be
stably supported is established. Dynamic algorithms for multicast
routing, network coding, power allocation, session scheduling, and
rate allocation across correlated sources, which achieve stability
for rates within the capacity region, are presented. This work
builds on the back-pressure approach introduced by Tassiulas
et al., extending it to network coding and correlated sources. In
the proposed algorithms, decisions on routing, network coding,
and scheduling between different sessions at a node are made
locally at each node based on virtual queues for different sinks.
For correlated sources, the sinks locally determine and control
transmission rates across the sources. The proposed approach
yields a completely distributed algorithm for wired networks.
In the wireless case, power control among different transmitters
is centralized while routing, network coding, and scheduling
between different sessions at a given node are distributed
Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey
A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for
players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to
static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one
period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods;
and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their
future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless
networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors,
resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In
this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless
networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to
encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances
and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various
problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together
with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey. Finally, we

Algorithmic Aspects of Energy-Delay Tradeoff in Multihop Cooperative Wireless Networks
We consider the problem of energy-efficient transmission in delay constrained
cooperative multihop wireless networks. The combinatorial nature of cooperative
multihop schemes makes it difficult to design efficient polynomial-time
algorithms for deciding which nodes should take part in cooperation, and when
and with what power they should transmit. In this work, we tackle this problem
in memoryless networks with or without delay constraints, i.e., quality of
service guarantee. We analyze a wide class of setups, including unicast,
multicast, and broadcast, and two main cooperative approaches, namely: energy
accumulation (EA) and mutual information accumulation (MIA). We provide a
generalized algorithmic formulation of the problem that encompasses all those
cases. We investigate the similarities and differences of EA and MIA in our
generalized formulation. We prove that the broadcast and multicast problems
are, in general, not only NP hard but also o(log(n)) inapproximable. We break
these problems into three parts: ordering, scheduling and power control, and
propose a novel algorithm that, given an ordering, can optimally solve the
joint power allocation and scheduling problems simultaneously in polynomial
time. We further show empirically that this algorithm used in conjunction with
an ordering derived heuristically using the Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm
yields near-optimal performance in typical settings. For the unicast case, we
prove that although the problem remains NP hard with MIA, it can be solved
optimally and in polynomial time when EA is used. We further use our algorithm
to study numerically the trade-off between delay and power-efficiency in
cooperative broadcast and compare the performance of EA vs MIA as well as the
performance of our cooperative algorithm with a smart noncooperative algorithm
