Cooling toolbox for atoms in optical lattices
We propose and analyze several schemes for cooling bosonic and fermionic
atoms in an optical lattice potential close to the ground state of the
no-tunnelling regime. Some of the protocols rely on the concept of algorithmic
cooling, which combines occupation number filtering with ideas from ensemble
quantum computation. We also design algorithms that create an ensemble of
defect-free quantum registers. We study the efficiency of our protocols for
realistic temperatures and in the presence of a harmonic confinement. We also
propose an incoherent physical implementation of filtering which can be
operated in a continuous way.Comment: 14 pages, 13 figure
Natural Density Distribution of Hermite Normal Forms of Integer Matrices
The Hermite Normal Form (HNF) is a canonical representation of matrices over
any principal ideal domain. Over the integers, the distribution of the HNFs of
randomly looking matrices is far from uniform. The aim of this article is to
present an explicit computation of this distribution together with some
applications. More precisely, for integer matrices whose entries are upper
bounded in absolute value by a large bound, we compute the asymptotic number of
such matrices whose HNF has a prescribed diagonal structure. We apply these
results to the analysis of some procedures and algorithms whose dynamics depend
on the HNF of randomly looking integer matrices
A conceptual approach to gene expression analysis enhanced by visual analytics
The analysis of gene expression data is a complex task for biologists wishing to understand the role of genes in the formation of diseases such as cancer. Biologists need greater support when trying to discover, and comprehend, new relationships within their data. In this paper, we describe an approach to the analysis of gene expression data where overlapping groupings are generated by Formal Concept Analysis and interactively analyzed in a tool called CUBIST. The CUBIST workflow involves querying a semantic database and converting the result into a formal context, which can be simplified to make it manageable, before it is visualized as a concept lattice and associated charts
Cyclic division algebras: a tool for space-time coding
Multiple antennas at both the transmitter and receiver ends of a wireless digital transmission channel may increase both data rate and reliability. Reliable high rate transmission over such channels can only be achieved through Space–Time coding. Rank and determinant code design criteria have been proposed to enhance diversity and coding gain. The special case of full-diversity criterion requires that the difference of any two distinct codewords has full rank.
Extensive work has been done on Space–Time coding, aiming at
finding fully diverse codes with high rate. Division algebras have been proposed as a new tool for constructing Space–Time codes, since they are non-commutative algebras that naturally yield linear fully diverse codes. Their algebraic properties can thus be further exploited to
improve the design of good codes.
The aim of this work is to provide a tutorial introduction to the algebraic tools involved in the design of codes based on cyclic division algebras. The different design criteria involved will be illustrated, including the constellation shaping, the information lossless property, the non-vanishing determinant property, and the diversity multiplexing trade-off. The final target is to give the complete mathematical background underlying the construction of the Golden code and the other Perfect Space–Time block codes
Quantum Cellular Automata
Quantum cellular automata (QCA) are reviewed, including early and more recent
proposals. QCA are a generalization of (classical) cellular automata (CA) and
in particular of reversible CA. The latter are reviewed shortly. An overview is
given over early attempts by various authors to define one-dimensional QCA.
These turned out to have serious shortcomings which are discussed as well.
Various proposals subsequently put forward by a number of authors for a general
definition of one- and higher-dimensional QCA are reviewed and their properties
such as universality and reversibility are discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures. To appear in the Springer Encyclopedia of
