A Minimalist Approach to Type-Agnostic Detection of Quadrics in Point Clouds
This paper proposes a segmentation-free, automatic and efficient procedure to
detect general geometric quadric forms in point clouds, where clutter and
occlusions are inevitable. Our everyday world is dominated by man-made objects
which are designed using 3D primitives (such as planes, cones, spheres,
cylinders, etc.). These objects are also omnipresent in industrial
environments. This gives rise to the possibility of abstracting 3D scenes
through primitives, thereby positions these geometric forms as an integral part
of perception and high level 3D scene understanding.
As opposed to state-of-the-art, where a tailored algorithm treats each
primitive type separately, we propose to encapsulate all types in a single
robust detection procedure. At the center of our approach lies a closed form 3D
quadric fit, operating in both primal & dual spaces and requiring as low as 4
oriented-points. Around this fit, we design a novel, local null-space voting
strategy to reduce the 4-point case to 3. Voting is coupled with the famous
RANSAC and makes our algorithm orders of magnitude faster than its conventional
counterparts. This is the first method capable of performing a generic
cross-type multi-object primitive detection in difficult scenes. Results on

Efficient computation of partition of unity interpolants through a block-based searching technique
In this paper we propose a new efficient interpolation tool, extremely
suitable for large scattered data sets. The partition of unity method is used
and performed by blending Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) as local approximants
and using locally supported weight functions. In particular we present a new
space-partitioning data structure based on a partition of the underlying
generic domain in blocks. This approach allows us to examine only a reduced
number of blocks in the search process of the nearest neighbour points, leading
to an optimized searching routine. Complexity analysis and numerical
experiments in two- and three-dimensional interpolation support our findings.
Some applications to geometric modelling are also considered. Moreover, the
associated software package written in \textsc{Matlab} is here discussed and
made available to the scientific community
TiGL - An Open Source Computational Geometry Library for Parametric Aircraft Design
This paper introduces the software TiGL: TiGL is an open source high-fidelity
geometry modeler that is used in the conceptual and preliminary aircraft and
helicopter design phase. It creates full three-dimensional models of aircraft
from their parametric CPACS description. Due to its parametric nature, it is
typically used for aircraft design analysis and optimization. First, we present
the use-case and architecture of TiGL. Then, we discuss it's geometry module,
which is used to generate the B-spline based surfaces of the aircraft. The
backbone of TiGL is its surface generator for curve network interpolation,
based on Gordon surfaces. One major part of this paper explains the
mathematical foundation of Gordon surfaces on B-splines and how we achieve the
required curve network compatibility. Finally, TiGL's aircraft component module
is introduced, which is used to create the external and internal parts of
aircraft, such as wings, flaps, fuselages, engines or structural elements
Extending twin support vector machine classifier for multi-category classification problems

problems. TWSVM not only overcomes the difficulties in handling the problem of exemplar unbalance in binary classification problems, but also it is four times faster in training a classifier than classical support vector machines. This paper proposes one-versus-all twin support vector machine classifiers (OVA-TWSVM) for multi-category classification problems by utilizing the strengths of TWSVM. OVA-TWSVM extends TWSVM to solve k-category classification problems by developing k TWSVM where in the ith TWSVM, we only solve the Quadratic Programming Problems (QPPs) for the ith class, and get the ith nonparallel hyperplane corresponding to the ith class data. OVA-TWSVM uses the well known one-versus-all (OVA) approach to construct a corresponding twin support vector machine classifier. We analyze the efficiency of the OVA-TWSVM theoretically, and perform experiments to test its efficiency on both synthetic data sets and several benchmark data sets from the UCI machine learning repository. Both the theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that OVA-TWSVM can outperform the traditional OVA-SVMs classifier. Further experimental comparisons with other multiclass classifiers demonstrated that comparable performance could be achieved.This work is supported in part by the grant

Fuzzy simulation of forest road surface parameters
The problem of construction of forest roads with the use of local low-strength substandard materials and industrial waste is considered. To solve the problem, the primary task is to develop a method for estimating the parameters of road surfaces taking into account the conditions of uncertainties in the data. This technique allows us to reasonably clarify some of the regulatory parameters and improve the technology of construction of forest roads, which was the goal of the work. To formalize the task, experimental studies were performed and on the basis of these results, the statement of the task of fuzzy derivation of the function for estimating the bearing capacity of the coating was performed. A Geometric Approach to Sound Source Localization from Time-Delay Estimates
This paper addresses the problem of sound-source localization from time-delay
estimates using arbitrarily-shaped non-coplanar microphone arrays. A novel
geometric formulation is proposed, together with a thorough algebraic analysis
and a global optimization solver. The proposed model is thoroughly described
and evaluated. The geometric analysis, stemming from the direct acoustic
propagation model, leads to necessary and sufficient conditions for a set of
time delays to correspond to a unique position in the source space. Such sets
of time delays are referred to as feasible sets. We formally prove that every
feasible set corresponds to exactly one position in the source space, whose
value can be recovered using a closed-form localization mapping. Therefore we
seek for the optimal feasible set of time delays given, as input, the received
microphone signals. This time delay estimation problem is naturally cast into a
programming task, constrained by the feasibility conditions derived from the
geometric analysis. A global branch-and-bound optimization technique is
proposed to solve the problem at hand, hence estimating the best set of
feasible time delays and, subsequently, localizing the sound source. Extensive
experiments with both simulated and real data are reported; we compare our
methodology to four state-of-the-art techniques. This comparison clearly shows
that the proposed method combined with the branch-and-bound algorithm
outperforms existing methods. These in-depth geometric understanding, practical
algorithms, and encouraging results, open several opportunities for future

Numerical Simulation of AFP Nip Point Temperature Prediction for Complex Geometries
Material placement at the ideal nip point temperature over complex surfaces with uniformity across the width of the compaction rollers results in optimized part properties for Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) processes. However, current AFP systems utilize heat control models and methodologies, based on multiple process parameters such as feed-rate and orientation, that are mostly open-loop. Here, infrared (IR) heater input is calibrated as a function of process parameters during machine qualification. This work presents a numerical simulation to predict arrayed-infrared (AIR) emitter radiation onto a substrate that includes view factor implementation, IR radiative heat flow calculation, energy rate balance, and a transient heat transfer model. The purpose of this numerical model is to predict nip point temperature on complex surfaces, serving as a baseline for a new arrayed-infrared (AIR) thermoset heater to improve AFP process control. It is anticipated that this simulation will accurately control the temperature for high-speed AFP layup of complex geometries. An anticipated result of an AIR heater system is that material calibration and testing will be reduced as temperature is instantaneously monitored and controlled. Therefore, temperature across the roller width will be uniform during placement of complex parts, independent of their geometry
