ViZDoom Competitions: Playing Doom from Pixels
This paper presents the first two editions of Visual Doom AI Competition,
held in 2016 and 2017. The challenge was to create bots that compete in a
multi-player deathmatch in a first-person shooter (FPS) game, Doom. The bots
had to make their decisions based solely on visual information, i.e., a raw
screen buffer. To play well, the bots needed to understand their surroundings,
navigate, explore, and handle the opponents at the same time. These aspects,
together with the competitive multi-agent aspect of the game, make the
competition a unique platform for evaluating the state of the art reinforcement
learning algorithms. The paper discusses the rules, solutions, results, and
statistics that give insight into the agents' behaviors. Best-performing agents
are described in more detail. The results of the competition lead to the
conclusion that, although reinforcement learning can produce capable Doom bots,
they still are not yet able to successfully compete against humans in this
game. The paper also revisits the ViZDoom environment, which is a flexible,
easy to use, and efficient 3D platform for research for vision-based
reinforcement learning, based on a well-recognized first-person perspective
game Doom
Human Computation and Convergence
Humans are the most effective integrators and producers of information,
directly and through the use of information-processing inventions. As these
inventions become increasingly sophisticated, the substantive role of humans in
processing information will tend toward capabilities that derive from our most
complex cognitive processes, e.g., abstraction, creativity, and applied world
knowledge. Through the advancement of human computation - methods that leverage
the respective strengths of humans and machines in distributed
information-processing systems - formerly discrete processes will combine
synergistically into increasingly integrated and complex information processing
systems. These new, collective systems will exhibit an unprecedented degree of
predictive accuracy in modeling physical and techno-social processes, and may
ultimately coalesce into a single unified predictive organism, with the
capacity to address societies most wicked problems and achieve planetary

Algorithms & Fiduciaries: Existing and Proposed Regulatory Approaches to Artificially Intelligent Financial Planners
Artificial intelligence is no longer solely in the realm of science fiction. Today, basic forms of machine learning algorithms are commonly used by a variety of companies. Also, advanced forms of machine learning are increasingly making their way into the consumer sphere and promise to optimize existing markets. For financial advising, machine learning algorithms promise to make advice available 24–7 and significantly reduce costs, thereby opening the market for financial advice to lower-income individuals. However, the use of machine learning algorithms also raises concerns. Among them, whether these machine learning algorithms can meet the existing fiduciary standard imposed on human financial advisers and how responsibility and liability should be partitioned when an autonomous algorithm falls short of the fiduciary standard and harms a client. After summarizing the applicable law regulating investment advisers and the current state of robo-advising, this Note evaluates whether robo-advisers can meet the fiduciary standard and proposes alternate liability schemes for dealing with increasingly sophisticated machine learning algorithms

World leaders, CEOs, and academics have suggested that a revolution in artificial intelligence is upon us. Are they right, and what will advances in artificial intelligence mean for international competition and the balance of power? This article evaluates how developments in artificial intelligence (AI) — advanced, narrow applications in particular — are poised to influence military power and international politics. It describes how AI more closely resembles “enabling” technologies such as the combustion engine or electricity than a specific weapon. AI’s still-emerging developments make it harder to assess than many technological changes, especially since many of the organizational decisions about the adoption and uses of new technology that generally shape the impact of that technology are in their infancy. The article then explores the possibility that key drivers of AI development in the private sector could cause the rapid diffusion of military applications of AI, limiting first-mover advantages for innovators. Alternatively, given uncertainty about the technological trajectory of AI, it is also possible that military uses of AI will be harder to develop based on private-sector AI technologies than many expect, generating more potential first-mover advantages for existing powers such as China and the United States, as well as larger consequences for relative power if a country fails to adapt. Finally, the article discusses the extent to which U.S. military rhetoric about the importance of AI matches the reality of U.S. investments.LBJ School of Public Affair
Marvin: an Innovative Omni-Directional Robotic Assistant for Domestic Environments
Population ageing and pandemics recently demonstrate to cause isolation of
elderly people in their houses, generating the need for a reliable assistive
figure. Robotic assistants are the new frontier of innovation for domestic
welfare, and elderly monitoring is one of the services a robot can handle for
collective well-being. Despite these emerging needs, in the actual landscape of
robotic assistants there are no platform which successfully combines a reliable
mobility in cluttered domestic spaces, with lightweight and offline Artificial
Intelligence (AI) solutions for perception and interaction. In this work, we
present Marvin, a novel assistive robotic platform we developed with a modular
layer-based architecture, merging a flexible mechanical design with
cutting-edge AI for perception and vocal control. We focus the design of Marvin
on three target service functions: monitoring of elderly and reduced-mobility
subjects, remote presence and connectivity, and night assistance. Compared to
previous works, we propose a tiny omnidirectional platform, which enables agile
mobility and effective obstacle avoidance. Moreover, we design a controllable
positioning device, which easily allows the user to access the interface for
connectivity and extends the visual range of the camera sensor. Nonetheless, we
delicately consider the privacy issues arising from private data collection on
cloud services, a critical aspect of commercial AI-based assistants. To this
end, we demonstrate how lightweight deep learning solutions for visual
perception and vocal command can be adopted, completely running offline on the

Using AI to Improve Sustainable Agricultural Practices: A Literature Review and Research Agenda
The world is confronted with the grand challenge of food insecurity amidst growing populations and the climate crisis. Artificial intelligence (AI) deployed in agricultural decision support systems (AgriDSS) raises both hopes and concerns for increasing agricultural productivity in sustainable ways. In this paper, we conduct a scoping review to uncover the roadblocks to the use of AI-supported AgriDSS in sustainable agriculture. Based on the corpus of 121 articles, we find that the effective use of AI-supported AgriDSS is hindered at technical, social, ethical, and ecological levels. Then, drawing on the experiential learning perspective, we propose how conjoint experiential learning (CEL) can enhance sustainable agricultural practices by enhancing both AI and human learning and overcoming roadblocks in using AgriDSS. Based on this conceptual framework, we build a research agenda that suggests blind spots and possible directions for future research
