    Modelling and Inverse Problems of Control for Distributed Parameter Systems; Proceedings of IFIP(W.G. 7.2)-IIASA Conference, July 24-28, 1989

    The techniques of solving inverse problems that arise in the estimation and control of distributed parameter systems in the face of uncertainty as well as the applications of these to mathematical modelling for problems of applied system analysis (environmental issues, technological processes, biomathematical models, mathematical economy and other fields) are among the major topics of research at the Dynamic Systems Project of the Systems and Decision Sciences (SDS) Program at IIASA. In July 1989 the SDS Program was a coorganizer of a regular IFIP (WG 7.2) conference on Modelling and Inverse Problems of Control for Distributed Parameter Systems that was held at IIASA, and was attended by a number of prominent theorists and practitioners. One of the main purpose of this meeting was to review recent developments and perspectives in this field. The proceedings are presented in this volume

    Generalized linear-in-parameter models : theory and audio signal processing applications

    This thesis presents a mathematically oriented perspective to some basic concepts of digital signal processing. A general framework for the development of alternative signal and system representations is attained by defining a generalized linear-in-parameter model (GLM) configuration. The GLM provides a direct view into the origins of many familiar methods in signal processing, implying a variety of generalizations, and it serves as a natural introduction to rational orthonormal model structures. In particular, the conventional division between finite impulse response (FIR) and infinite impulse response (IIR) filtering methods is reconsidered. The latter part of the thesis consists of audio oriented case studies, including loudspeaker equalization, musical instrument body modeling, and room response modeling. The proposed collection of IIR filter design techniques is submitted to challenging modeling tasks. The most important practical contribution of this thesis is the introduction of a procedure for the optimization of rational orthonormal filter structures, called the BU-method. More generally, the BU-method and its variants, including the (complex) warped extension, the (C)WBU-method, can be consider as entirely new IIR filter design strategies.reviewe

    Stabilization of cascaded nonlinear systems under sampling and delays

    Over the last decades, the methodologies of dynamical systems and control theory have been playing an increasingly relevant role in a lot of situations of practical interest. Though, a lot of theoretical problem still remain unsolved. Among all, the ones concerning stability and stabilization are of paramount importance. In order to stabilize a physical (or not) system, it is necessary to acquire and interpret heterogeneous information on its behavior in order to correctly intervene on it. In general, those information are not available through a continuous flow but are provided in a synchronous or asynchronous way. This issue has to be unavoidably taken into account for the design of the control action. In a very natural way, all those heterogeneities define an hybrid system characterized by both continuous and discrete dynamics. This thesis is contextualized in this framework and aimed at proposing new methodologies for the stabilization of sampled-data nonlinear systems with focus toward the stabilization of cascade dynamics. In doing so, we shall propose a small number of tools for constructing sampled-data feedback laws stabilizing the origin of sampled-data nonlinear systems admitting cascade interconnection representations. To this end, we shall investigate on the effect of sampling on the properties of the continuous-time system while enhancing design procedures requiring no extra assumptions over the sampled-data equivalent model. Finally, we shall show the way sampling positively affects nonlinear retarded dynamics affected by a fixed and known time-delay over the input signal by enforcing on the implicit cascade representation the sampling process induces onto the retarded system
