    Analysis of the usability of a preliminary design for an EDM metadata mapping tool

    Europeana aims to bring together metadata for cultural heritage objects from institutions throughout Europe, to increase their visibility and accessibility. This project requires that metadata created and stored in a multitude of different formats and variations to be normalized into a single, standard format, which is soon to be EDM. This constitutes a massive effort on the part of institutions and aggregators, and any system that can ease the process of converting millions of metadata records could be very beneficial to these cultural institutions. This research explores the usability of a potential design for a metadata mapping tool intended to assist in the creation of a mapping specification from a local schema to Europeana’s EDM format. The design incorporates five components necessary to consider when creating a quality mapping of elements. In order to ascertain usability, a prototype system was created, and a cognitive walkthrough was conducted to identify usability issues. While the design could be a viable option, usability issues must first be addressed, including how metadata information is presented and how the tool handles complex mapping situations.Joint Master Degree in Digital Library Learning (DILL

    The paper discusses the Europeana Creative project which aims to facilitate re-use of cultural heritage metadata and content by the creative industries. The paper focuses on the contribution of Ontotext to the project activities. The Europeana Data Model (EDM) is further discussed as a new proposal for structuring the data that Europeana will ingest, manage and publish. The advantages of using EDM instead of the current ESE metadata set are highlighted. Finally, Ontotext’s EDM Endpoint is presented, based on OWLIM semantic repository and SPARQL query language. A user-friendly RDF view is presented in order to illustrate the possibilities of Forest - an extensible modular user interface framework for creating linked data and semantic web applications

    Highlights of library data models in the era of Linked Open Data

    Semantic Web technologies and Linked data form a new reference framework for libraries. The library community aims to integrate its data with the Semantic Web and as a result new library data models have been developed. In this context, significant research effort focuses on the alignment between the library models with relevant models developed by other communities in the cultural heritage domain. However there exist several issues concerning the interoperability between all these data models. This paper seeks to contribute in the interoperability of four models, namely FRBR, FRBRoo, EDM and BIBFRAME. It highlights the commonalities and the divergences between them by using a case bibliographic record and by exploring how this record is represented by each one of them

    A Digital Registry for Archaeological Find Spots and Excavation Documentation in IANUS

    Grey literature (site notebooks, reports etc.) and research data in archaeology are invaluable sources of information currently lacking a central reference registry in Germany. This paper discusses requirements and the underlying data model of a registry to be developed for find spots and archaeological excavation data within the IANUS project at the German Archaeological Institute. This registry is to collect information on archaeological investigations data for a finding aid service. The focus for this registry will be based on the collection of metadata about primary data and grey literature, not on secondary data or on publications. Starting with the acquisition of basic metadata needs drawn from the IANUS mission and project charter. A review of already existing projects and initiatives in this field (EDNA, tDAR, ADS, Open Context) provides more details about which information should be captured during a registration of research data for a long term digital preservation archive. Finally recommendations for the data model of this registry are drawn from the evaluation of existing generic and archaeology-specific metadata standards (Dublin Core, EDM, LIDO, ADeX, CARARE)

    Amsterdam Museum Linked Open Data

    In this document we describe the Amsterdam Museum Linked Open Data set. The dataset is a five-star Linked Data representation and comprises the entire collection of the Amsterdam Museum consisting of more than 70,000 object descriptions. Furthermore, the institution's thesaurus and person authority files used in the object metadata are included in the Linked Data set. The data is mapped to the Europeana Data Model, utilizing Dublin Core, SKOS, RDA-group2 elements and the OAI-ORE model to represent the museum data. Vocabulary concepts are mapped to GeoNames and DBpedia. The two main contributions of this dataset are the inclusion of internal vocabularies and the fact that the complexity of the original dataset is retained

    DDB-KG: The German Bibliographic Heritage in a Knowledge Graph

    Under the German government’s initiative “NEUSTART Kultur”, the German Digital Library or Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek (DDB) is undergoing improvements to enhance user-experience. As an initial step, emphasis is placed on creating a knowledge graph from the bibliographic record collection of the DDB. This paper discusses the challenges facing the DDB in terms of retrieval and the solutions in addressing them. In particular, limitations of the current data model or ontology to represent bibliographic metadata is analyzed through concrete examples. This study presents the complete ontological mapping from DDB-Europeana Data Model (DDB-EDM) to FaBiO, and a prototype of the DDB-KG made available as a SPARQL endpoint. The suitabiliy of the target ontology is demonstrated with SPARQL queries formulated from competency question
