Developing Asset Life Cycle Management capabilities through the implementation of Asset Life Cycle Plans – an Action Research project
Asset Life Cycle Management is a strategic approach to managing physical assets over their complete life cycle. However, the literature and the recent ISO 55,000 standard do not offer guidance as to how to develop such an approach. This paper investigates the main capabilities for Asset Life Cycle Management by means of a four year Action Research project implementing Asset Life Cycle Plans. Five main capabilities emerged: 1. strategic information use; 2. alignment of operations and strategy; 3. alignment of different disciplines; 4. a dual time perspective and 5. exerting influence over the assets throughout the entirety of the organization

The Texas ETD Repository is a large effort that span multiple independent initiatives, all of which interact to support the overall task of managing ETDs in Texas. This presentation will describe Vireo, the customized submission and workflow management application that TDL developed for DSpace, and it's role within the Texas ETD Repository. Learning from Success: Approaching Data Management in the Humanities with Optimism and Good Cheer
Scientists and Social Scientists are well supported and accustomed to thinking about the life-cycles of their data and writing data management plans. The variety of humanities data and the novelty of managing it over its life-cycle often leads to confusion at best and chaos at worst during humanities research projects. In this discussion session we looked at a template for a humanities data management plan, successful data management plans for grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and discussed what humanities faculty at our institutions need to know about data management and what support structures they need in order to manage their data well
Adaptation of WASH Services Delivery to Climate Change and Other Sources of Risk and Uncertainty
This report urges WASH sector practitioners to take more seriously the threat of climate change and the consequences it could have on their work. By considering climate change within a risk and uncertainty framework, the field can use the multitude of approaches laid out here to adequately protect itself against a range of direct and indirect impacts. Eleven methods and tools for this specific type of risk management are described, including practical advice on how to implement them successfully
The Quest for a Practical Sophomore-Level Software Engineering Course
This paper describes our efforts starting since 2014 when we began developing a practical introductory sophomore-level software engineering course. The aim is to guide students into the fundamental theory and practice of building reliable software, with an emphasis on agile and object-oriented practices. Course topics revolve around three main themes: 1) managing complexity (how to model and scale software), 2) achieving quality (how to minimize defects) and 3) supporting usability (how to deliver user functionality). Students are exposed to theoretical and practical aspects of software production, such as software life-cycle models, strong-typing, testing, documentation, graphical user interfaces, UML, design patterns, version control systems and software deployment. The course is in constant evolution: near-future plans include adding build automation tools and DevOps concepts. We made the early decision to use reference materials available to our students at no cost; therefore, all reference materials are accessed online through resources afforded by our library
Software Development Standard and Software Engineering Practice: A Case Study of Bangladesh
Improving software process to achieve high quality in a software development
organization is the key factor to success. Bangladeshi software firms have not
experienced much in this particular area in comparison to other countries. The
ISO 9001 and CMM standard has become a basic part of software development. The
main objectives of our study are: 1) To understand the software development
process uses by the software developer firms in Bangladesh 2) To identify the
development practices based on established quality standard and 3) To establish
a standardized and coherent process for the development of software for a
specific project. It is revealed from this research that software industries of
Bangladesh are lacking in target set for software process and improvement,
involvement of quality control activities, and standardize business expertise
practice. This paper investigates the Bangladeshi software industry in the

Risk management standards for project management
The purpose of this paper is to present and compare the main standards for project risk management that are currently available today. Four international standards recognized world- wide were selected for comparison: PMI, PRINCE2, IPMA, ISO 31000 and IEC 62198. Project management has evolved over recent years into a mature professional discipline characterized by a formalized body of knowledge and the definition of systematic processes for the execution of a project. All these and possibly other factors as well, have resulted in growing numbers of books, articles and conferences being devoted to project risk management. This level of activity has also led to the development of a number of standards that prescribe for and advise organizations on the best way to manage their risks. Time is money: life cycle rational inertia and delegation of investment management : [Version November 2013]
We investigate the theoretical impact of including two empirically-grounded insights in a dynamic life cycle portfolio choice model. The first is to recognize that, when managing their own financial wealth, investors incur opportunity costs in terms of current and future human capital accumulation, particularly if human capital is acquired via learning by doing. The second is that we incorporate age-varying efficiency patterns in financial decisionmaking. Both enhancements produce inactivity in portfolio adjustment patterns consistent with empirical evidence. We also analyze individuals’ optimal choice between self-managing their wealth versus delegating the task to a financial advisor. Delegation proves most valuable to the young and the old. Our calibrated model quantifies welfare gains from including investment time and money costs, as well as delegation, in a life cycle setting
