    TeamSTEPPS and Organizational Culture

    Patient safety issues remain despite several strategies developed for their deterrence. While many safety initiatives bring about improvement, they are repeatedly unsustainable and short-lived. The index hospital’s goal was to build an organizational culture within a groundwork that improves teamwork and continuing healthcare team engagement. Teamwork influences the efficiency of patient care, patient safety, and clinical outcomes, as it has been identified as an approach for enhancing collaboration, decreasing medical errors, and building a culture of safety in healthcare. The facility implemented Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS), an evidence-based framework which was used for team training to produce valuable and needed changes, facilitating modification of organizational culture, increasing patient safety compliance, or solving particular issues. This study aimed to identify the correlation between TeamSTEPPS enactment and improved organizational culture in the ambulatory care nursing department of a New York City public hospital

    Challenging the Dehumanisation of HRM: Developing an Alternative Resilience Scaffold to the Theory of Firm’s Application in SMEs

    Whilst recent, extant research and literature highlight the contributions that SMEs make to local, national, and international socio-economic contexts, this empirical and theoretical chapter focuses on the resource constraints smaller firm managers face when implementing HRM employee selection and retention practices. This topic is crucial because there is firstly, lack of theoretical development on how SMEs and their management address resource constraint situations. Secondly, previous attempts to contribute to SME crises have varyingly and erroneously relied on Coase’s seminal Theory of the Firm from a management perspective. Such dependence has paradoxically led to ineffective and inefficient use of constrained resources and has alienated and dehumanised staff. To address the paradox, this chapter uses 85 qualitative interviews to highlight how to 1) humanise HRM practice and policy implementation; 2) develop an alternative ‘Integrative Employee Resilience Framework’ and 3) produce a ‘Resilience Scaffold’ for HRM and SMEs in crises. These contributions provide an alternative set of resources namely on the humanisation and resilience capabilities needed by managers and employees when implementing HRM practices in SME crisis environments. The implications of the proposed framework and impacts on the future of HRM and SME studies are identified and discussed

    Key technologies for safe and autonomous drones

    Drones/UAVs are able to perform air operations that are very difficult to be performed by manned aircrafts. In addition, drones' usage brings significant economic savings and environmental benefits, while reducing risks to human life. In this paper, we present key technologies that enable development of drone systems. The technologies are identified based on the usages of drones (driven by COMP4DRONES project use cases). These technologies are grouped into four categories: U-space capabilities, system functions, payloads, and tools. Also, we present the contributions of the COMP4DRONES project to improve existing technologies. These contributions aim to ease drones’ customization, and enable their safe operation.This project has received funding from the ECSEL Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement No 826610. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and Spain, Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Latvia, Netherlands. The total project budget is 28,590,748.75 EUR (excluding ESIF partners), while the requested grant is 7,983,731.61 EUR to ECSEL JU, and 8,874,523.84 EUR of National and ESIF Funding.     Towards Scalable Real-time Analytics:: An Architecture for Scale-out of OLxP Workloads

    We present an overview of our work on the SAP HANA Scale-out Extension, a novel distributed database architecture designed to support large scale analytics over real-time data. This platform permits high performance OLAP with massive scale-out capabilities, while concurrently allowing OLTP workloads. This dual capability enables analytics over real-time changing data and allows fine grained user-specified service level agreements (SLAs) on data freshness. We advocate the decoupling of core database components such as query processing, concurrency control, and persistence, a design choice made possible by advances in high-throughput low-latency networks and storage devices. We provide full ACID guarantees and build on a logical timestamp mechanism to provide MVCC-based snapshot isolation, while not requiring synchronous updates of replicas. Instead, we use asynchronous update propagation guaranteeing consistency with timestamp validation. We provide a view into the design and development of a large scale data management platform for real-time analytics, driven by the needs of modern enterprise customers

    Future Internet of Things: Connecting the Unconnected World and Things Based on 5/6G Networks and Embedded Technologies

    Undeniably, the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem keeps on advancing at a fast speed, far above all predictions for growth and ubiquity. From sensor to cloud, this massive network continues to break technical limits in a variety of ways, and wireless sensor nodes are likely to become more prevalent as the number of Internet of Things devices increases into the trillions to connect the world and unconnected objects. However, their future in the IoT ecosystem remains uncertain, as various difficulties as with device connectivity, edge artificial intelligence (AI), security and privacy concerns, increased energy demands, the right technologies to use, and continue to attract opposite forces. This chapter provides a brief, forward-looking overview of recent trends, difficulties, and cutting-edge solutions for low-end IoT devices that use reconfigurable computing technologies like FPGA SoC and next-generation 5/6G networks. Tomorrow’s IoT devices will play a critical role. At the end of this chapter, an edge FPGA SoC computing-based IoT application is proposed, to be a novel edge computing for IoT solution with low power consumption and accelerated processing capability in data exchange

    LASSO – an observatorium for the dynamic selection, analysis and comparison of software

    Mining software repositories at the scale of 'big code' (i.e., big data) is a challenging activity. As well as finding a suitable software corpus and making it programmatically accessible through an index or database, researchers and practitioners have to establish an efficient analysis infrastructure and precisely define the metrics and data extraction approaches to be applied. Moreover, for analysis results to be generalisable, these tasks have to be applied at a large enough scale to have statistical significance, and if they are to be repeatable, the artefacts need to be carefully maintained and curated over time. Today, however, a lot of this work is still performed by human beings on a case-by-case basis, with the level of effort involved often having a significant negative impact on the generalisability and repeatability of studies, and thus on their overall scientific value. The general purpose, 'code mining' repositories and infrastructures that have emerged in recent years represent a significant step forward because they automate many software mining tasks at an ultra-large scale and allow researchers and practitioners to focus on defining the questions they would like to explore at an abstract level. However, they are currently limited to static analysis and data extraction techniques, and thus cannot support (i.e., help automate) any studies which involve the execution of software systems. This includes experimental validations of techniques and tools that hypothesise about the behaviour (i.e., semantics) of software, or data analysis and extraction techniques that aim to measure dynamic properties of software. In this thesis a platform called LASSO (Large-Scale Software Observatorium) is introduced that overcomes this limitation by automating the collection of dynamic (i.e., execution-based) information about software alongside static information. It features a single, ultra-large scale corpus of executable software systems created by amalgamating existing Open Source software repositories and a dedicated DSL for defining abstract selection and analysis pipelines. Its key innovations are integrated capabilities for searching for selecting software systems based on their exhibited behaviour and an 'arena' that allows their responses to software tests to be compared in a purely data-driven way. We call the platform a 'software observatorium' since it is a place where the behaviour of large numbers of software systems can be observed, analysed and compared

    Trustworthy Federated Learning: A Survey

    Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a significant advancement in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), enabling collaborative model training across distributed devices while maintaining data privacy. As the importance of FL increases, addressing trustworthiness issues in its various aspects becomes crucial. In this survey, we provide an extensive overview of the current state of Trustworthy FL, exploring existing solutions and well-defined pillars relevant to Trustworthy . Despite the growth in literature on trustworthy centralized Machine Learning (ML)/Deep Learning (DL), further efforts are necessary to identify trustworthiness pillars and evaluation metrics specific to FL models, as well as to develop solutions for computing trustworthiness levels. We propose a taxonomy that encompasses three main pillars: Interpretability, Fairness, and Security & Privacy. Each pillar represents a dimension of trust, further broken down into different notions. Our survey covers trustworthiness challenges at every level in FL settings. We present a comprehensive architecture of Trustworthy FL, addressing the fundamental principles underlying the concept, and offer an in-depth analysis of trust assessment mechanisms. In conclusion, we identify key research challenges related to every aspect of Trustworthy FL and suggest future research directions.     Student Success in Co-operative Education: An Analysis of Job Postings and Performance Evaluations

    Co-operative education (co-op) programs combine coursework and work internships and have become popular worldwide. In this analysis, we use two separate co-op datasets to understand employer expectations and factors that contribute to student success. First, we analyze over 13000 unique filled job postings from work terms in 2021. We group skills using k-means analysis and frequency counting to characterize the types of co-op jobs available to students, finding that co-op students are frequently required to possess both technical skills (such as knowledge of specific tools) and soft skills (such as communication). Next, we construct two separate weighted bipartite graphs linking the groups of academic programs advertised to by employers to either the required skills or titles of each job. By using community detection to co-cluster the nodes in each graph, we determine the types of skills and roles expected by employers for students in different programs. We find significant differences in the expectations of employers for students in each program, including the importance of soft skills for arts students and the prevalence of data science and artificial intelligence skills in many academic programs. Second, using over 45000 performance evaluations collected separately for in-person (2019) and remote (2021) internship positions, we uncover the characteristics of successful co-op students. Each evaluation includes an overall performance rating and written comments and recommendations provided by the supervisor. By using logistic regression and word frequency counting to analyze supervisors’ general and recommendation comments, we find the most successful students to be excellent leaders and innovators, with remote students also being praised for their independence. Supervisors encourage remote students to be innovative and learn technological skills, while the supervisors of in-person students recommend improving oral communication and presentation abilities. By identifying the job roles and required skills expected by employers for students in different academic programs, institutions can better prepare students for appropriate jobs. By understanding the skills that contribute to student success in remote and in-person contexts, students can focus on developing the most important skills for their intended work environment. Together, these findings highlight important skills that students should acquire in their early careers
