    Information technology and urban green analysis

    It is well recognized that green area plays a pivotal role in improving urban environment, such as preserving water and soil, controlling temperature and humidity of air, preventing pollution, flood prevention, functioning as buffers between incompatible land uses, preserving natural habitat, and providing space for recreation and relaxation. However, due to pressures from new development both in urban fringes and urban centres, urban green and open spaces are seen to be rapidly declining in term of allocated spaces and quality. Without careful urban land use planning, many open spaces will be filled with residential and commercial buildings. Therefore, there is a need for proper planning control to ensure that the provisions of green spaces are adequately being conserved for current and future generations. The need for an urban green information system is particularly important for strategic planning at macro level and local planning at the micro level. The advent of information technology has created an opportunity for the development of new approaches in preserving and monitoring the development of urban green and open spaces. This paper will discuss the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) incorporated with other data sources such as remote sensing images and aerial photographs in providing innovative and alternative solutions in the management and monitoring of urban green. GIS is widely accepted in urban landscape planning as it can provide better understanding on the spatial pattern and changes of land use in an area. This paper will primarily focus on digital database that are developed to assist in monitoring urban green and open spaces at regional and local context. The application of GIS in the Klang Valley region or better known as AGISwlk developed since mid-1990's is currently being used by various organisations in the region. The focus of AGISwlk is not merely in providing relevant database to its stakeholders but more importantly, assist in making specific and relevant decisions with regard to spatial planning. It is also used to monitor the loss of green areas by using several temporal data sets. The method of classifying green and open spaces in the region is also being discussed. This paper demonstrates that GIS can be an effective tool in preserving and monitoring green and open spaces in an urban area. The contribution of urban green digital database in someway may leads toward landscape sustainability as to satisfy the ever changing society

Emphasis is placed on the analysis of Google Analytics data to increase the visibility and discoverability of content. The article describes the use of Google Analytics to support fruitful digital outreach programs, to guide metadata creation for enhancing access, and to measure user demand to aid selection for digitization. Valuable reports, features, and tools in Google Analytics are identified and the use of these tools to gather meaningful data is explained

    Antipsychotic Drug Use: Managing Cardiometabolic and Cost Effects

    Across the US, 30%, or approximately one third of people meet the criteria for at least one mental illness.1 Of those with severe mental illness (SMI), namely schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the mortality rate is more than twofold compared to the general population.2 The cardiovascular risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular related deaths, including metabolic disease and type II diabetes, are not only modifiable, but staggeringly higher for those with SMI.3 Though antipsychotic drug prescription is the standard protocol for SMI treatment, such drug effects on cardiovascular risk factors and related deaths exacerbate the much higher mortality rate for the severely mentally ill population. Due to both the prevalence of SMI and the physical comorbidities that it entails, analysis of healthcare costs associated with this population are an essential part of general health and policy improvement for the U.S. Therefore, a breakdown of the healthcare costs of this population requires not only acknowledgment of the modes of treatment for mental illness specifically, but also the identification and cost-analysis of the commonly associated physical comorbidities. This is especially important considering SMI is almost always considered chronic, and many SMI patients qualify for either Medicare, Medicaid, or both. Certain gaps in coverage can lead to lack of preventive care, exacerbating the cost burden. From a clinician’s perspective, assessing relevant scientific studies and reviews to change the relationship between primary care and psychiatry is necessary to dampen the high mortality rate of the SMI population. From a policy-maker’s perspective, analyzing the cause and effect balance between managing costs of care directed at the SMI itself against the adjunct costs from physical comorbidity calls for a change in the structure of therapeutic care and how the SMI population accesses primary care. The Collaborative Care model is a health care model that unifies psychiatric, behavioral, and primary care to support the mental, behavioral, and physical health of patients. By supporting holistic healthcare, the high cost of care for the SMI population will be diminished. The model includes four parts: patient-centered care, populationbased care, measurement-based treatment to target, and evidence-based care. Swapping oral antipsychotics with injectable versions will be especially cost-effective by improving adherence rates, and thus, reducing institutionalization and other hospitalizations. By enforcing the Collaborative Care model through community health center interventions, clinicians and policy makers will be able to work together to effectively leverage the health of the SMI population while eroding the high health care expenditure that this population currently imposes on states
