    Managing a document-based information space

    We present a novel user interface in the form of a complementary virtual environment for managing personal document archives, i.e., for document filing and retrieval. Our implementation of a spatial medium for document interaction, exploratory search and active navigation plays to the strengths of human visual information processing and further stimulates it. Our system provides a high degree of immersion so that the user readily forgets the artificiality of our environment. Three well-integrated features support this immersion: first, we enable users to interact more naturally through gestures and postures (the system can be taught custom ones); second, we exploit 3D display technology; and third, we allow users to manage arrangements (manually edited structures, as well as computer-generated semantic structures). Our ongoing evaluation indicates that even non-expert users can efficiently work with the information in a document collection and that the process can actually be enjoyable.     The web-based document archiving information system is an information system that is useful for managing archive storage where the information system created will assist in the process of storing and managing documents.     WikiSearch: An Information Retrieval System

    WikiSearch is an information retrieval system (based on the vector space model) that can be used for searching Wikipedia, one of the largest knowledge bases in the world. Clustering techniques are utilized to group semantically related documents and improve the efficiency of the search system. Clustering allows relevant documents that do not match a query’s explicit form to be retrieved. Cluster labels are automatically generated using document features to provide a faceted browsing service for exploration and discovery. We also propose a storage scheme for creating and managing inverted index and clustering information using a NoSQL database. Finally, performance results are provided for the search system

    Administrative Archiving Management Information System Through SITATA in Pascasarjana IAIN Palangka Raya

    Based on the author's result of observations, Pascasarjana Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Palangka Raya faced problems in the management of archiving administrative documents, namely inadequate archive space and taking too long time to look for a document in a particular case. So the author designed and built an information system named Administrative Information System (literally Sistem Informasi Ketatausahaan (SITATA)) in order to overcome these administrative archiving management problems. This research aims to explain the design and implementation of SITATA. The method used in this study is the waterfall technique. This information system, which was designed withcode using PHP as the programming language and MySQL as the database, it could be accessed offline via the local host web server XAMPP. This information system can add, edit, delete, save, search, recap, and print archived documents. The results obtained from the implementation of this information system are that it makes it easier for Pascasarjana IAIN Palangka Raya in managing letter archiving although it still needs further improvement

    Application of ARMA information governance maturity model for assessment of records management programme at Chancellor College, University of Malawi

    Institutions, whether public or private, create records in the course of conducting their business. Records constitute a vital resource for any organisation, including universities. They are important as they provide the information needed by decision-makers and promote accountability. This study assessed the records management programme at Chancellor College, Malawi, using the ARMA Information Governance Maturity Model. Data for the study were collected through face-to-face interviews with purposively selected participants, an examination of document analysis and non-participant observation. The findings of the study revealed that there is accountability in the records management programme although the responsibility for the records management function is delegated to individuals who do not necessarily have relevant qualifications in the area of records management. The findings also revealed that there is partial compliance with the existing legal and regulatory frameworks in the country. In addition, the findings indicated that retrieval of records, especially semi-current records, is problematic due to insufficient storage space and inadequate storage equipment. Based on the findings, the study concluded that using ARMA Information Governance Maturity Model, the level of maturity of the records management programme at Chancellor College is in the developmental stage. The study recommended that Chancellor College should develop and implement a records management policy and records retention and disposition schedule, train existing staff and provide resources and equipment for managing records so that records in these systems remain authentic and reliable. The study also recommends the development of a national policy on managing university records by the National Archives and Records Services in Malawi as a whole

    Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework

    The project which led to this report was funded by JISC in 2010--2011 as part of its 'Managing Research Data' programme, to examine the way in which Big Science data is managed, and produce any recommendations which may be appropriate. Big science data is different: it comes in large volumes, and it is shared and exploited in ways which may differ from other disciplines. This project has explored these differences using as a case-study Gravitational Wave data generated by the LSC, and has produced recommendations intended to be useful variously to JISC, the funding council (STFC) and the LSC community. In Sect. 1 we define what we mean by 'big science', describe the overall data culture there, laying stress on how it necessarily or contingently differs from other disciplines. In Sect. 2 we discuss the benefits of a formal data-preservation strategy, and the cases for open data and for well-preserved data that follow from that. This leads to our recommendations that, in essence, funders should adopt rather light-touch prescriptions regarding data preservation planning: normal data management practice, in the areas under study, corresponds to notably good practice in most other areas, so that the only change we suggest is to make this planning more formal, which makes it more easily auditable, and more amenable to constructive criticism. In Sect. 3 we briefly discuss the LIGO data management plan, and pull together whatever information is available on the estimation of digital preservation costs. The report is informed, throughout, by the OAIS reference model for an open archive

    A document management methodology based on similarity contents

    The advent of the WWW and distributed information systems have made it possible to share documents between different users and organisations. However, this has created many problems related to the security, accessibility, right and most importantly the consistency of documents. It is important that the people involved in the documents management process have access to the most up-to-date version of documents, retrieve the correct documents and should be able to update the documents repository in such a way that his or her document are known to others. In this paper we propose a method for organising, storing and retrieving documents based on similarity contents. The method uses techniques based on information retrieval, document indexation and term extraction and indexing. This methodology is developed for the E-Cognos project which aims at developing tools for the management and sharing of documents in the construction domain
