    weSPOT: A personal and social approach to inquiry-based learning

    weSPOT is a new European initiative proposing a novel approach for personal and social inquiry-based learning in secondary and higher education. weSPOT aims at enabling students to create their mash-ups out of cloud based tools and services in order to perform scientific investigations. Students will also be able to share their inquiry accomplishments in social networks and receive feedback from the learning environment and their peers. This paper presents the research framework of the weSPOT project, as well as the initial inquiry-based learning scenarios that will be piloted by the project in real-life educational settings

    Loyola University Libraries propose to develop a suite of services, systems, and online tools for the purpose of collecting, storing, organizing, and providing access to digital assets produced by Loyola University related to research, teaching, and learning. Functioning collectively as a “digital repository,” these initiatives will work in concert to facilitate a wide range of scholarly and archival activities, including content creation, collaboration, resource sharing, author rights management, digitization, preservation, and access by a global academic audience. This open-access repository will provide for increased discoverability, visibility and access to scholarship created at Loyola, and support the management and long-term preservation of the intellectual output of the university community

    Model Based Requirements Engineering for the Development of Modular Kits

    The introduction of modular design increases complexity within product development and especially within Requirements Engineering. To handle this complexity, the approach of Model Based Systems Engineering is applied in this contribution. First, the origins of complexity in modular product development are introduced. Key challenges within Requirements Engineering are drawn up and then verified. A modeling method for requirements of modular kits is introduced and validated in the series development of hybrid drivetrain systems at a German automotive manufacturer. Increases in quality and a requirements reusability of over 80% were achieved. Thus, the capability of the modeling method is verified

    Strategic and Operational Management of Supplier Involvement in New Product Development: a Contingency Perspective

    This paper examines how firms succeed to leverage supplier involvement in product development. The paper extends earlier work on managing supplier involvement by providing an integrated analysis of results, processes and conditions both at the level of individual development projects and the overall firm. Following a multiple-case study approach with theoretical sampling, the study is carried out by examining eight projects in which four manufacturers from different industries involve multiple suppliers. The findings suggest that successful supplier involvement is dependent on the coordinated design, execution and evaluation of strategic, long-term processes and operational, short-term management processes and the presence of enabling factors such as a cross-functional oriented organization. The required intensity of these processes and enablers depends on contingencies such as firm size and environmental uncertainty. In contrast with previous research, we find no indications that managing supplier involvement requires a different approach in highly innovative projects compared to less innovative projects.innovation;new product development;purchasing;supplier relations;R&D management
