    Reliable and effective maintenance support is a vital consideration for the management within today's manufacturing environment. This paper discusses the development of a maintenance system for the world's largest robot welding facility. The development system combines a case-based reasoning approach for diagnosis with context information, as electronic on-line manuals, linked using open hypermedia technology. The work discussed in this paper delivers not only a maintenance system for the robot stations under consideration, but also a design framework for developing maintenance systems for other similar applications

    Medical diagnosis is a major part of health care services. Clinicians are always looking for a way to better the services and quality of healthcare. This project purpose is to develop a knowledge based system in order to assist clinicians in medical diagnosis. The use of such system is expected to increase the quality of medical and healthcare. The system main purpose is to act as a reminder system to the clinicians. Ultimately, the clinicians themselves are the one who will be making the diagnose decision. The system is there to assist them, by giving timeliness medical information, and to help refresh their memory and reduce the error that could happen during diagnosis. Methodology used in developing the system is phased development of the Rapid Application Development methodology. Several versions of the system will be developed. The result will be an expert system that takes input, which are clinical symptoms from user and then list several disease that the patient might have suffered according to the symptoms. Besides that, suggested treatment will also be display for each listed disease. The system also acts as repository system where it has patient records functions. 11

    AI Solutions for MDS: Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Misuse Detection and Localisation in Telecommunication Environments

    This report considers the application of Articial Intelligence (AI) techniques to the problem of misuse detection and misuse localisation within telecommunications environments. A broad survey of techniques is provided, that covers inter alia rule based systems, model-based systems, case based reasoning, pattern matching, clustering and feature extraction, articial neural networks, genetic algorithms, arti cial immune systems, agent based systems, data mining and a variety of hybrid approaches. The report then considers the central issue of event correlation, that is at the heart of many misuse detection and localisation systems. The notion of being able to infer misuse by the correlation of individual temporally distributed events within a multiple data stream environment is explored, and a range of techniques, covering model based approaches, `programmed' AI and machine learning paradigms. It is found that, in general, correlation is best achieved via rule based approaches, but that these suffer from a number of drawbacks, such as the difculty of developing and maintaining an appropriate knowledge base, and the lack of ability to generalise from known misuses to new unseen misuses. Two distinct approaches are evident. One attempts to encode knowledge of known misuses, typically within rules, and use this to screen events. This approach cannot generally detect misuses for which it has not been programmed, i.e. it is prone to issuing false negatives. The other attempts to `learn' the features of event patterns that constitute normal behaviour, and, by observing patterns that do not match expected behaviour, detect when a misuse has occurred. This approach is prone to issuing false positives, i.e. inferring misuse from innocent patterns of behaviour that the system was not trained to recognise. Contemporary approaches are seen to favour hybridisation, often combining detection or localisation mechanisms for both abnormal and normal behaviour, the former to capture known cases of misuse, the latter to capture unknown cases. In some systems, these mechanisms even work together to update each other to increase detection rates and lower false positive rates. It is concluded that hybridisation offers the most promising future direction, but that a rule or state based component is likely to remain, being the most natural approach to the correlation of complex events. The challenge, then, is to mitigate the weaknesses of canonical programmed systems such that learning, generalisation and adaptation are more readily facilitated

    An Ontology-Driven Methodology To Derive Cases From Structured And Unstructured Sources

    The problem-solving capability of a Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) system largely depends on the richness of its knowledge stored in the form of cases, i.e. the CaseBase (CB). Populating and subsequently maintaining a critical mass of cases in a CB is a tedious manual activity demanding vast human and operational resources. The need for human involvement in populating a CB can be drastically reduced as case-like knowledge already exists in the form of databases and documents and harnessed and transformed into cases that can be operationalized. Nevertheless, the transformation process poses many hurdles due to the disparate structure and the heterogeneous coding standards used. The featured work aims to address knowledge creation from heterogeneous sources and structures. To meet this end, this thesis presents a Multi-Source Case Acquisition and Transformation Info-Structure (MUSCATI). MUSCATI has been implemented as a multi-layer architecture using state-of-the-practice tools and can be perceived as a functional extension to traditional CBR-systems. In principle, MUSCATI can be applied in any domain but in this thesis healthcare was chosen. Thus, Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) were used as the source to generate the knowledge. The results from the experiments showed that the volume and diversity of cases improves the reasoning outcome of the CBR engine. The experiments showed that knowledge found in medical records (regardless of structure) can be leveraged and standardized to enhance the (medical) knowledge of traditional medical CBR systems. Subsequently, the Google search engine proved to be very critical in “fixing” and enriching the domain ontology on-the-fly

    A Case-Based Approach to Business Process Monitoring

    International audienceThe agile workflow technology deals with flexible workflow adaptation and overriding, in case of foreseen as well as unforeseen changes and problems in the operating business environment. One key issue that an agile workflow system should address is Business Process (BP) monitoring. This consists in properly highlighting and organizing non-compliances and adaptations with respect to the default process schema. Such an activity can be the starting point for other very critical tasks, such as quality assessment and process reengineering. In this paper, we introduce an automated support to BP monitoring, which exploits the Case-based Reasoning (CBR) methodology. CBR is particularly well suited for managing exceptional situations, and has been proposed in the literature for process change reuse and workflow adaptation support. Our work extends these functionalities by retrieving traces of process execution similar to the current one, which can then be automatically clustered. Retrieval and clustering results can provide support both to end users, in the process instance execution phase, and to process engineers, in (formal) process quality evaluation and long term process schema redefinition. Our approach in practice is illustrated by means of a case study in the field of stroke management
