    Academic conferences play an important role in modern science and technology development. They provide venues for people involved in particular research areas to communicate with each other, share research achievement, and understand the current leading edge of development in that area. They also provide opportunity to periodically summarise the past work and find new directions for future research. The peer reviewed conference papers become reference for other researchers. There are thousands of conferences organised all over the world every year. For each conference there are hundreds of paper submissions. The management of submission, review and selection process is a hard and tedious task for conference committees. This thesis discusses the design and implementation of a web-based application to facilitate an efficient and effective management of paper submission, review and selection process in academic conferences.[FROM INTRODUCTION

    Research Data Management and the Canadian Academic Library: An Organizational Consideration of Data Management and Data Stewardship

    Get PDF
    Research data management (RDM) has become a professional imperative for Canada’s academic librarians. Recent policy considerations by our national research funding agencies that address the ability of Canadian universities to effectively manage the massive amounts of research data they now create has helped library and university administrators recognize this gap in the research enterprise and identify RDM as a solution. RDM is not new to libraries, though. Rather, it draws on existing and evolving organizational functions in order to improve data collection, access, use, and preservation. A successful research data management service requires the skills and knowledge found in a library’s research liaisons, collections experts, policy analysts, IT experts, archivists and preservationists. Like the library, research data management is not singular but multi-faceted. It requires collaboration, technology and policy analysis skills, and project management acumen. This paper examines research data management as a vital information, technical, and policy service in academic libraries today. It situates RDM not only as actions and services but also as a suite of responsibilities that require a high level of planning, collaboration, and judgment, thereby binding people to practice. It shows how RDM aligns with the skill sets and competencies of librarianship and illustrates how RDM spans the library’s organizational structure and intersects with campus stakeholders allied in the research enterprise

    On research efficiency: a micro-analysis of Dutch university research in economics and business management.

    We argue that efficiency assessments of academic research should focus on micro-units of research production rather than on conventionally employed (aggregated) macro-units, and show that such a detailed analysis of research performance provides interesting insights. In addition, we propose a non-parametric methodology that is specially tailored for analyzing the productive efficiency of research: it starts from a specification of the managerial objectives of research activities while imposing minimal structure on the (typically unknown) production technology. We illustrate our points by assessing the productive efficiency of research in Economics and Business Management faculties at Dutch universities. Next to measuring productive efficiency, we look for specific patterns in efficiency distributions over universities, years and areas of specialization. In addition, we investigate the impact of external funding and of the size of research programs on academic research efficiency.Business; Economics; Efficiency; Management; Research; Research in economics; University; University-research;

    Connectivity has become one of the critical success factors in generating and sustaining high-performing National Innovation Systems. Industry Science Links (ISLs) are an important dimension of this connectivity. Over the last decades, multiple insights have been gained (both from theory and practice) as to how 'effective' ISLs can be fostered through the design and the development of university-based technology transfer units. In this paper, we document and analyze the evolution of 'effective' university-based technology transfer mechanisms, towards a matrix structure allowing an active involvement of the research groups in commercial exploitation of their research findings, while specialized supporting services like intellectual property management and business plan development are centralized. We show that the establishment of:(1) an appropriate context within academia;(2) the design of stimulating incentive structures for academic research groups and,(3) the implementation of appropriate decision and monitoring processes within the interface unit itself, are critical elements in fostering 'effective' linkages between industry and the academic science base.Decision; Factors; Industry; Management; Matrix; Processes;

    Researchers conducted an investigation into the occurrence of students’ academic dishonesty at the University of Management and Technology by using quantitative method. Students’ academic dishonesty in University of Management and technology has become a major issue in recent years due to advancement in technology. This study explores the factors that influence the behavior of students and make them dishonest. The study largely supports the students understanding to the academic dishonesty and plagiarism. The university faculties have failed to deliver proper awareness regarding students’ academic dishonest behavior and about university policies of academic dishonesty. However, indigenous knowledge of faculty’s focal persons helped them in a greater context to keep them somewhat safe from academic dishonesty. For this study, simple random sampling technique is used by taking 400 participants/respondents from University of Management and technology. Researchers check the seriousness of cheating regarding student’s different types of behavior in reference to various kinds of academic dishonesty. It is hoped that the findings of this research can be used to understand the issues around academic dishonesty and developed ways of supporting students in order to reduce its occurrence. While policy recognises the need to facilitate university-industry technology transfer (UITT), international studies indicate that the setup and effectiveness of the associated instruments is highly context-specific. We examine the reorientation of Irish universities in the direction of facilitating UITT, with a substantive focus on the role of Ireland's technology transfer offices. This paper also questions how academic research is changing in line with policy rhetoric. We find that Irish university research and the management of its output are changing in a manner that is not incompatible with UITT, although with significant resource and skills constraints. These findings hold important lessons for national economic and innovation systems of comparable size, with a development trajectory shaped by foreign direct investment
