    Adaptive Resource Management in Asynchronous Real-time Distributed Systems Using Feedback Control Functions

    Presents feedback control techniques for performing adaptive resource management in asynchronous real-time distributed systems. Such systems are characterized by significant execution time uncertainties in the application environment and system resource state. Thus, such systems require adaptive resource management that dynamically monitor the system for adherence to the desired real-time requirements and perform run-time adaptation of the application to changing workloads when unacceptable timeliness behavior is observed. We propose adaptive resource management techniques that are based on feedback control theory. The controllers solve resource allocation problems that arise during run-time adaptation using the classical proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control functions. We study the performance of the controllers through simulation. The simulation results indicate that the controllers produce low missed deadline ratios and resource utilizations during situations of high workloads

    Control strategies for microgrid with multiple distributed energy resources

    Microgrid is considered as a smart solution to the global energy crisis and environmental issues these days for employing green technology. This is a small scale, usually renewable energy based distributed generation system which basically serves local users and does not require transmission lines. However, Microgrid needs a suitable control system to improve its efficiency and reliability to work as a standalone unit or as parallel connected unit with the main utility grid. For instance, renewable energy sources such as, Solar Photovoltaics and Wind Turbine depend on weather conditions thus result in output power fluctuation. In this case, a storage unit is essential that can provide back up during low generation period and can store outstanding energy at the time of less demand. In addition, integration of multiple distribution energy resources raises the energy generation of Microgrid sufficiently but increases complications in operations as well. Besides, a communication network is also vital in this case for information transfer within the sources and other components of the structure. Hence, a study related to advance control system to maintain a smart energy management incorporation with fault detection and self-healing aspects of Microgrid is presented in this research. The purpose of this project is to find out the most advantageous control techniques for Microgrid with multiple distributed energy resources which need to be user-friendly as well. Research shows that, Droop control techniques are beneficial for above requirements performing Decentralized control method where communication networks are not essential. Moreover, in this paper some MATLAB/SIMULINK based simulations are presented. Where a Microgrid is modelled that consists of distributed energy resources namely Photovoltaic, Wind turbine and Fuel cells. Finally, simulation results of different droop control techniques are presented and some discussions regarding tested techniques are enclosed

    Autonomous energy management system with self-healing capabilities for green buildings (microgrids)

    Nowadays, distributed energy resources are widely used to supply demand in micro grids specially in green buildings. These resources are usually connected by using power electronic converters, which act as actuators, to the system and make it possible to inject desired active and reactive power, as determined by smart controllers. The overall performance of a converter in such system depends on the stability and robustness of the control techniques. This paper presents a smart control and energy management of a DC microgrid that split the demand among several generators. In this research, an energy management system ( EMS) based on multi-agent system ( MAS) controllers is developed to manage energy, control the voltage and create balance between supply and demand in the system with the aim of supporting the reliability characteristic. In the proposed approach, a reconfigurated hierarchical algorithm is implemented to control interaction of agents, where a CAN bus is used to provide communication among them. This framework has ability to control system, even if a failure appears into decision unit. Theoretical analysis and simulation results for a practical model demonstrate that the proposed technique provides a robust and stable control of a microgrid

    A distributed model predictive control strategy for back-to-back converters

    In recent years Model Predictive Control (MPC) has been successfully used for the control of power electronics converters with different topologies and for different applications. MPC offers many advantages over more traditional control techniques such as the ability to avoid cascaded control loops, easy inclusion of constraint and fast transient response. On the other hand, the controller computational burden increases exponentially with the system complexity and may result in an unfeasible realization on modern digital control boards. This paper proposes a novel Distributed Model Predictive Control, which is able to achieve the same performance of the classical Model Predictive Control whilst reducing the computational requirements of its implementation. The proposed control approach is tested on a AC/AC converter in a back-to-back configuration used for power flow management. Simulation results are provided and validated through experimental testing in several operating conditions

    Management of Islanded Operation of Microgirds

    Distributed generations with continuously growing penetration levels offer potential solutions to energy security and reliability with minimum environmental impacts. Distributed Generations when connected to the area electric power systems provide numerous advantages. However, grid integration of distributed generations presents several technical challenges which has forced the systems planners and operators to account for the repercussions on the distribution feeders which are no longer passive in the presence of distributed generations. Grid integration of distributed generations requires accurate and reliable islanding detection methodology for secure system operation. Two distributed generation islanding detection methodologies are proposed in this dissertation. First, a passive islanding detection technique for grid-connected distributed generations based on parallel decision trees is proposed. The proposed approach relies on capturing the underlying signature of a wide variety of system events on a set of critical system parameters and utilizes multiple optimal decision tress in a parallel network for classification of system events. Second, a hybrid islanding detection method for grid-connected inverter based distributed generations combining decision trees and Sandia frequency shift method is also proposed. The proposed method combines passive and active islanding detection techniques to aggregate their individual advantages and reduce or eliminate their drawbacks. In smart grid paradigm, microgrids are the enabling engine for systematic integration of distributed generations with the utility grid. A systematic approach for controlled islanding of grid-connected microgrids is also proposed in this dissertation. The objective of the proposed approach is to develop an adaptive controlled islanding methodology to be implemented as a preventive control component in emergency control strategy for microgrid operations. An emergency power management strategy for microgrid autonomous operation subsequent to inadvertent islanding events is also proposed in this dissertation. The proposed approach integrates microgrid resources such as energy storage systems, demand response resources, and controllable micro-sources to layout a comprehensive power management strategy for ensuring secure and stable microgrid operation following an unplanned islanding event. In this dissertation, various case studies are presented to validate the proposed methods. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies

    Information Theory and Cooperative Control in Networked Multi-Agent Systems with Applications to Smart Grid

    This dissertation focuses on information theoretic aspects of and cooperative control techniques in networked multi-agent systems (NMAS) with communication constraints. In the first part of the dissertation, information theoretic limitations of tracking problems in networked control systems, especially leader-follower systems with communication constraints, are studied. Necessary conditions on the data rate of each communication link for tracking of the leader-follower systems are provided. By considering the forward and feedback channels as one cascade channel, we also provide a lower bound for the data rate of the cascade channel for the system to track a reference signal such that the tracking error has finite second moment. Finally, the aforementioned results are extended to the case in which the leader system and follower system have different system models. In the second part, we propose an easily scalable hierarchical decision-making and control architecture for smart grid with communication constraints in which distributed customers equipped with renewable distributed generation (RDG) interact and trade energy in the grid. We introduce the key components and their interactions in the proposed control architecture and discuss the design of distributed controllers which deal with short-term and long-term grid stability, power load balancing and energy routing. At microgrid level, under the assumption of user cooperation and inter-user communications, we propose a distributed networked control strategy to solve the demand-side management problem in microgrids. Moreover, by considering communication delays between users and microgrid central controller, we propose a distributed networked control strategy with prediction to solve the demand-side management problem with communication delays. In the third part, we consider the disturbance attenuation and stabilization problem in networked control systems. To be specific, we consider the string stability in a large group of interconnected systems over a communication network. Its potential applications could be found in formation tracking control in groups of robots, as well as uncertainty reduction and disturbance attenuation in smart grid. We propose a leader-following consensus protocol for such interconnected systems and derive the sufficient conditions, in terms of communication topology and control parameters, for string stability. Simulation results and performance in terms of disturbance propagation are also given. In the fourth part, we consider distributed tracking and consensus in networked multi-agent systems with noisy time-varying graphs and incomplete data. In particular, a distributed tracking with consensus algorithm is developed for the space-object tracking with a satellite surveillance network. We also intend to investigate the possible application of such methods in smart grid networks. Later, conditions for achieving distributed consensus are discussed and the rate of convergence is quantified for noisy time-varying graphs with incomplete data. We also provide detailed simulation results and performance comparison of the proposed distributed tracking with consensus algorithm in the case of space-object tracking problem and that of distributed local Kalman filtering with centralized fusion and centralized Kalman filter. The information theoretic limitations developed in the first part of this dissertation provide guildlines for design and analysis of tracking problems in networked control systems. The results reveal the mutual interaction and joint application of information theory and control theory in networked control systems. Second, the proposed architectures and approaches enable scalability in smart grid design and allow resource pooling among distributed energy resources (DER) so that the grid stability and optimality is maintained. The proposed distributed networked control strategy with prediction provides an approach for cooperative control at RDG-equipped customers within a self-contained microgrid with different feedback delays. Our string stability analysis in the third part of this dissertation allows a single networked control system to be extended to a large group of interconnected subsystems while system stability is still maintained. It also reveals the disturbance propagation through the network and the effect of disturbance in one subsystem on other subsystems. The proposed leader-following consensus protocol in the constrained communication among users reveals the effect of communication in stabilization of networked control systems and the interaction between communication and control over a network. Finally, the distributed tracking and consensus in networked multi-agent systems problem shows that information sharing among users improves the quality of local estimates and helps avoid conflicting and inefficient distributed decisions. It also reveals the effect of the graph topologies and incomplete node measurements on the speed of achieving distributed decision and final consensus accuracy

    Distributed State Estimation With Phasor Measurement Units (Pmu) For Power Systems

    Wide-area monitoring for the power system is a key tool for preventing the power system from system wide failure. State Estimation (SE) is an essential and practical monitoring tool that has been widely used to provide estimated values for each quantity within energy management systems (EMS) in the control center. However, monitoring larger power systems coordinated by regional transmission operators has placed an enormous operational burden on current SE techniques. A distributed state estimation (DSE) algorithm with a hierarchical structure designed for the power system industry is much more computationally efficient and robust especially for monitoring a wide-area power system. Moreover, considering the deregulation of the power system industry, this method does not require sensitive data exchange between smaller areas that may be competing entities. The use of phasor measurement units (PMUs) in the SE algorithm has proven to improve the performance in terms of accuracy and converging speed. Being able to synchronize the measurements between different areas, PMUs are perfectly suited for distributed state estimation. This dissertation investigates the benefits of the DSE using PMU over a serial state estimator in wide area monitoring. A new method has been developed using available PMU data to calculate the reference angle differences between decomposed power systems in various situations, such as when the specific PMU data of the global slack bus cannot be obtained. The algorithms were tested on six bus, I standard 30 bus and I 118-bus test cases. The proposed distributed state estimator has also been implemented in a test bed to work with a power system real-time digital simulator (RTDS) that simulates the physical power system. PMUs made by SEL and GE are used to provide real-time inputs to the distributed state estimator. Simulation results demonstrated the benefits of the PMU and distributed SE techniques. Additionally a constructed test bed verified and validated the proposed algorithms and can be used for different smart grid tests

    Modeling and Control of Low-Voltage DC Microgrid With Photovoltaic Energy Resources

    The use of DC microgrids is a promising concept that could improve power system reliability and stability in the future. The advantages of microgrids in general include an increase in energy efficiency through lowered energy transmission and operational costs, a reduced carbon footprint through the integration of renewable energy resources, and improvements in power quality and availability to end users through the use of advanced control techniques. DC microgrids have the potential to provide additional advantages, including decreasing interconnection conversion levels of distributed energy resources and energy storage systems, and preventing the propagation of power system disturbances. Power system research groups around the world are investigating the DC microgrid concept through simulation platforms and experimental setups. Several strategies have been proposed for the control of DC microgrids, including hierarchical, distributed, and intelligent control strategies. In this work, PSCAD/EMTDC simulation environment was used for the modeling and simulation of a DC microgrid. A power management strategy was then implemented in order to ensure voltage regulation and seamless transition between grid-connected and isolated modes. The strategy is based on an autonomous distributed control scheme in which the DC bus voltage level is used as an indicator of the power balance in the microgrid. The autonomous control strategy does not rely on communication links or a central controller, resulting in reduced costs and enhanced reliability. As part of the control strategy, an adaptive droop control technique is proposed for PV sources in order to maximize the utilization of power available from these sources while ensuring acceptable levels of system voltage regulation. These goals are achieved by avoiding the curtailment of renewable energy until violation of the voltage regulation limit occurs. The adaptive droop control then curtails the output power of the PV sources and, at the same time, restores the DC voltage level to within an acceptable tolerance range
