Making hurricane track data accessible
Our interactive tool allows the exploration, validation and presentation of hundreds of years of dynamically simulated storm tracks. The tracks were generated as part of a research project to improve the risk assessment of tropical storm damage by the insurance industry. The main impact of the tool is that exploratory interactive visualisation is now being used by the storm track modellers to (a) validate and improve model outputs, (b) discuss outputs with their peers (c) obtain a better understanding of the formation and development of tropical storms and (d) present examples of the behaviour of storms under different conditions to the insurance industry and others. Insights into tropical storm behaviour have been obtained and these insights are being articulated
Making information accessible
A description is given of a new approach to provide information to cassava workers and the creation of a Cassava Information Center, one of a worldwide network of centers providing highly specialized, current information to agricultural researchers. Factors are described that have contributed to the success of this type of centre and their orientation towards the solution of food- production deficits in the world by using a commodity-oriented strategy. The following are analyzed: the relation between information and research; characteristics of the Latin American scientist regarding information production and consumption; publication infrastructure, that in Latin America is another illustration of the vicious circle of under-development; the services offered by the Scientific Information Exchange Unit at the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT); and the concept of consolidated information that includes not only the recollection and dissemination of the results of research but also the mechanisms that synthesize these results and integrate them as scientific and technical knowledge to contribute to the advance ofscience and to the solution of problems. Making justice more accessible
From the point of view of the Citizen, Justice is not always readily
accessible. Either because it is a lengthy process, potentially
expensive, sometimes unclear or simply scary, people will often
avoid or withdraw from a judicial process, especially in those
cases that involve relatively small amounts. This results in the
giving up of a basic right, with the potential loss of rightful
benefits. In this paper we briefly analyze the main aspects that
impair access to Justice nowadays. We then move on to look at
recent technological developments in the field of Online Dispute
Resolution to argue that these can, in the near future, have a
significant role in improving access to Justice. Specifically, we
analyze the UMCourt Conflict Resolution Framework, developed
by our research team, and address the different dimensions in
which such tools contribute to make Justice more accessible,
namely through better access to useful information, support in
decision-making or more cost-effective processes.Development Fund through the COMPETE Programme

Making Microsoft PowerPoint Accessible
Join me to learn some of the accessibility features built-in PowerPoint and how to make your presentations accessible to all students, especially those who use assistive technology such as screen readers. As an institution which recognizes the value of improving the quality of online courses through accessible content, Cowley College partnered with Blackboard to incorporate their accessibility checker Ally. During the presentation, I will discuss what we\u27ve learned since its launch earlier this year, and attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about improving accessibility
