    The (un)happiness of knowledge and the knowledge of (un)happiness: Happiness research and policies for knowledge-based economies

    Paper presented to the International Conference Policies for Happiness, June 14-17, 2007, Certosa di Pontignano, University of Siena, Italy.This paper explores the current state and interfaces of two broad policy discourses, i.e. that of policies for knowledge-based economies (KBEs) and policy implications of happiness research, which so far have exhibited little explicit cross-referencing. I first review the state of 'mainstream' knowledge policy associated with the OECD, the related but somewhat separate literature on information society indicators, and some 'non-mainstream' knowledge policy analysis. This is followed by a brief overview of some of the major policy implications and controversies in happiness research. Next, I discuss major interfaces of the two policy discourses. They mostly concern the nexus of education, work and innovation. I also illustrate the diversity of beliefs and values about some core elements of KBEs in a group of what are usually regarded as similar countries, and advocate the use of subjective variables to capture these differences. The main argument put forward in this paper is that policies for KBEs should be informed by insights from happiness research

    Indigenous entrepreneurship as a research field : developing a definitional framework from the emerging canon

    This study investigates the possibility and utility of clearly defining Indigenous entrepreneurship as a distinct disciplinary field of science and charting for it a preparadigmatic framework that distinguishes this field of scholarship from all others. This study uses a strategy of literature search and examination to argue that Indigenous entrepreneurship, as a research area, is sufficiently distinguished from both mainstream entrepreneurship and other social and management sciences to constitute a legitimate, well defined sub-field of research in its own right. The study provides both a formal definition of the field and an illustrated theoretical framework to describe it.<br /

    Revistas latino-americanas e lĂ­nguas hegemĂŽnicas para publicação acadĂȘmica no Scopus e Web of Science

    This paper presents a descriptive analysis of SCOPUS’ and Web of Science’s journal lists, in order to illustrate and critically assess the current presence of Latin American journals included in these mainstream databases and their working languages for publication. The latest lists of journals released by both databases as of March 2020 were analyzed in terms of journal language and country of publication. Results show Brazil clearly emerges as the regional leader, especially in WoS’ Science Citation Index Expanded and Emerging Sources Citation Index. However, this predominance of Brazilian journals does not entail a corresponding relevance of the Portuguese language. Spanish is the predominant language in mainstream Latin American journals, especially in the Social Sciences and Humanities, while journals identified as multilingual tend to associate either Spanish or Portuguese with English. The combination of Spanish and Portuguese is significantly smaller. This calls for a critical revision of the state of the Latin American scientific-editorial field as a linguistic market, as well as for further questioning the role of English as the lingua franca of academiaEste artigo apresenta uma anĂĄlise descritiva das listas de revistas do SCOPUS e do Web of Science (WoS), a fim de ilustrar e avaliar criticamente a presença atual de revistas latino-americanas incluĂ­das nesses bancos de dados e seus idiomas de trabalho para publicação. As Ășltimas listas de revistas divulgadas pelos dois bancos de dados em março de 2020 foram analisadas em termos de idioma e paĂ­s de publicação. Os resultados mostram que o Brasil emerge claramente como lĂ­der regional, especialmente no Science Citation Index Expanded e em Emerging Sources Citation Index do WoS. No entanto, esse predomĂ­nio de revistas brasileiras nĂŁo implica uma relevĂąncia correspondente da lĂ­ngua portuguesa. O espanhol Ă© o idioma predominante nas principais revistas latino-americanas, especialmente nas ciĂȘncias sociais e humanas, enquanto as revistas identificadas como multilĂ­ngues tendem a associar espanhol ou portuguĂȘs ao inglĂȘs.     National scientific strategies in tropical soil sciences

    A bibliometric analysis of the publications on tropical soils and agriculture shows that different strategies can be found across countries, in the way scientists publish and disseminate their results, choose their research topics (fertilization and microbiology of soil being the research priorities in the Third World), and distribute their effort across fields. We propose some indicators measuring these orientations, and a reconsideration of the data sources used in the evaluation of research activity in the Third World, and of the influence of the North on the South, since we have found that Third World production in substantially higher than is usually estimated. Finally, we indicate some guidelines for policy definition in the light of these results, focusing on the necessity of an active and mobile scientific community, and of more important communication between scientists working in similar ecological environments.     Disability and the Muslim Perspective: An Introduction for Rehabilitation and Health Care Providers

    [Excerpt] This monograph offers an introduction to and overview of a broad spectrum and diversity of Muslims with disabilities and chronic health conditions who come from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. The perspective provided here also highlights larger issues of human rights. Given the current immigration trends in the United States, it is critical that service providers work across cultures and systems to help Muslims access disability and health care services and resources in their communities. Over the years, service professionals and researchers have come to recognize that individuals with disabilities and health conditions do not always hold the same health beliefs, understandings, objectives, and priorities as the service providers they encounter. The result is an intercultural gap in understanding between clients and providers that may result in a poor treatment or rehabilitative outcome. This monograph will use the terms client, consumer, and patient interchangeably to denote those seeking disability services, medical services, or both. We emphasize that to bridge the gap between Muslim service users and mainstream U.S. service systems, service providers in disability and rehabilitation systems need to increase their sensitivity and ability to accommodate differences between their services and the needs of their clients

    Religious Racial Formation Theory and its Metaphysics

    While the intersection between race and religion has been an important site for research for the sociology of religion and religious studies (in its descriptive dimensions) as well s theology (in its religiously normative dimensions), neither of these disciplines has incorporated recent work in the analytic philosophy of race. Analytic philosophy of race, for its part, has largely neglected the race/religion intersection, while analytic theologians by and large ignore the theological significance of race altogether. In this paper I am to draw together these distinct disciplinary contributions—social-historical, philosophical and normative-theological—into a single integrated framework for a research program in analytic theology. I call that framework “religious racial formation theory,” and I claim that the work of specifying a determinate religious racial formation theory is not merely a (normatively driven) sociological and historical task but a necessarily philosophical one. I then detail what sorts of metaphysical determinations are required in order to yield an adequate explanation of the intersection uncovered by the socio-historical data summarized in the first section

    Traveling Theory: The Legacy of Edward W. Said in Eastern Europe

Said’s concepts in Eastern Europe. In his text “Traveling Theory” Said examines intercultural translations of Western ideas for use in new historical contexts. The phenomenon of traveling applies as well to Said’s notion of Orientalism. Many researchers of Eastern Europe have applied Said’s concept to analyze post-communist societies. The cultural translation has led both to creative interpretations of Said’s thought and to an ideological voice trapped in the post-communist discourse of modernization.Cet article Ă©tudie la circulation des concepts formulĂ©s par Edward W. Said en Europe de l’Est. Dans son texte « Traveling Theory », Said analyse la traduction interculturelle d’idĂ©es occidentales en vue de leur utilisation dans de nouveaux contextes historiques. Le phĂ©nomĂšne de traveling s’applique aussi Ă  la notion d’orientalisme de Said.
