This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. These will be detailed in a forthcoming paper

    Aircraft electromagnetic compatibility

    Get PDF
Illustrated are aircraft architecture, electromagnetic interference environments, electromagnetic compatibility protection techniques, program specifications, tasks, and verification and validation procedures. The environment of 400 Hz power, electrical transients, and radio frequency fields are portrayed and related to thresholds of avionics electronics. Five layers of protection for avionics are defined. Recognition is given to some present day electromagnetic compatibility weaknesses and issues which serve to reemphasize the importance of EMC verification of equipment and parts, and their ultimate EMC validation on the aircraft. Proven standards of grounding, bonding, shielding, wiring, and packaging are laid out to help provide a foundation for a comprehensive approach to successful future aircraft design and an understanding of cost effective EMC in an aircraft setting

Aerodynamic Electrical Energy: Wind Turbine Engineering

    Get PDF
Renewable resources such as wind, solar, and water, are important in energy production. This project was to design a wind turbine electricity generation system and gain an understanding of the engineering involved in producing electricity from the wind. Having observed the wind patterns on the campus of Utah State University, it was decided to obtain both a horizontal axis (HAWT) and a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) and mount them on the roof of the USU Dean F. Peterson, Jr. Engineering Laboratory Building. The outputs of both turbines were measured and compared. For the low wind conditions of Logan, Utah, the HAWT was found to be the most effective

A novel coupler design and analysis with shielding material tests for a CPT system of electric vehicles based on electromagnetic resonant coupling

    Get PDF
In this paper, a contactless power transfer (CPT) system using a novel geometrically enhanced energy transfer coupler with three different shielding materials has been built and analysed, along with the evaluations from aspects of electromagnetics and RMS power transmitting based on electromagnetic resonant coupling. A CPT system design improvement with the proposed H-shape ferromagnetic cores and the combined semi-enclosed passive electromagnetic shielding methods have been investigated in terms of generated electromagnetic field characteristics, system power transfer ratings, system efficiency optimization and performances of shielding materials. The results have shown that, across the range of operating frequency of the CPT system, aluminium shielding as a metallic material method could deliver better overall CPT system performance than other two ferromagnetic materials, steel 1010 and ferrite. In addition, the coupler prototype design limitations, misalignment tolerance and the passive shielding design considerations including distance between windings and inner surfaces of shielding shells have been discussed

Identifying smart conducting materials for Wi-Fi electromagnetic interference shielding

The objective of this paper is to identify a suitable coating material in order to tune the microwave radiation and produce absorption losses for Wi-Fi devices. It is also desirable to obtain high absorption losses outside the Wi-Fi microwave frequency range of 2.4 GHz. Literature reviews of several types of material are described and compared for the use of the selected material in order to coat a Wi-Fi device for the desired absorption losses for that device. The selected material for the Wi-Fi device is usually a metal material or a combination of metals like Aluminium in polymer matrix with different types of composites. The choice of materials will aim to target the tuning of the electromagnetic spectrum at a frequency in the range of 2.4 GHz. The paper focuses on two groups of polymer materials; conducting material as a result of composites like Carbon Nanotube Composites (CNC) or other metal composites. The second group is the Intrinsic Conducting Polymer (ICP) which conducts as a result of doping with other materials. A third group is the highly conductive metals like copper and aluminum. The metals are used as a reference comparator to the other two groups

    Distribution Line Multi-tool

Power companies are always interested in the best possible monitoring equipment for their grid. The power line multi-tool developed would aid in the monitoring of the power system’s distribution network. This device assesses the current conditions of distribution power lines. The device is able to measure current, detect downed power lines, as well as recognize fire starting conditions, and have wireless communication for ease of access and installation. Overall this device greatly aids in helping utilities monitor their grid in more detail. With the increase of dry climates yearly, several utility companies are taking measures to aid in the prevention of power line based fires. The use of the distribution line multi-tool gives power companies an additional resource in fire prevention. With accurate data received, power companies can take the necessary precautions to prevent power line based fires. One of the deadliest and most destructive fires of recent history in Paradise California has put power companies on high alert and motivated the state to provide funding to utilities to harden their infrastructure and a product like this fits perfectly into this agenda of fire mitigation. With hundreds of thousands of distribution lines throughout California’s vast terrain, monitoring them has become a cumbersome task yet more necessary in recent years. With a drier than usual climate, the environment has become more prone to fire, especially with areas with distribution lines running through them. With high distribution voltages used and the occurrence of large short circuits on these systems, downed power lines can create fire hazards. A number of factors can cause downed power lines, which includes galloping from winds, impact based falls, and excessive tension on distribution cables or poles. When these poles fall, they have the potential to not only cause a short circuit, which can damage nearby equipment or turn off the power for customers but also cause fires. These high voltages and extreme transient currents mixed in a dry, wilted environment increases the opportunity for a fire to be started but for it to also spread with ease

The Voyager spacecraft is subject to radiation from external natural space, from radioisotope thermoelectric generators and heater units, and from the internal environment where penetrating electrons generate surface ionization effects in semiconductor devices. Methods for radiation hardening and tests for radiation sensitivity are described. Results of characterization testing and sample screening of over 200 semiconductor devices in a radiation environment are summarized
