    Modeling Crowd Feedback in the Mobile App Market

    Mobile application (app) stores, such as Google Play and the Apple App Store, have recently emerged as a new model of online distribution platform. These stores have expanded in size in the past five years to host millions of apps, offering end-users of mobile software virtually unlimited options to choose from. In such a competitive market, no app is too big to fail. In fact, recent evidence has shown that most apps lose their users within the first 90 days after initial release. Therefore, app developers have to remain up-to-date with their end-users’ needs in order to survive. Staying close to the user not only minimizes the risk of failure, but also serves as a key factor in achieving market competitiveness as well as managing and sustaining innovation. However, establishing effective communication channels with app users can be a very challenging and demanding process. Specifically, users\u27 needs are often tacit, embedded in the complex interplay between the user, system, and market components of the mobile app ecosystem. Furthermore, such needs are scattered over multiple channels of feedback, such as app store reviews and social media platforms. To address these challenges, in this dissertation, we incorporate methods of requirements modeling, data mining, domain engineering, and market analysis to develop a novel set of algorithms and tools for automatically classifying, synthesizing, and modeling the crowd\u27s feedback in the mobile app market. Our analysis includes a set of empirical investigations and case studies, utilizing multiple large-scale datasets of mobile user data, in order to devise, calibrate, and validate our algorithms and tools. The main objective is to introduce a new form of crowd-driven software models that can be used by app developers to effectively identify and prioritize their end-users\u27 concerns, develop apps to meet these concerns, and uncover optimized pathways of survival in the mobile app ecosystem

    Authorship Authentication of Short Messages from Social Networks Machines

    Dataset consists of 17000 tweets collected from Twitter, as 500 tweets for each of 34 authors that meet certain criteria. Raw data is collected by using the software Nvivo. The collected raw data is preprocessed to extract frequencies of 200 features. In the data analysis 128 of features are eliminated since they are rare in tweets. As a progressive presentation, five – fifteen – twenty – twenty five – thirty and thirty four of these authors are selected each time. Since recurrent artificial neural networks are more stable and in general ANNs are more successful distinguishing two classes, for N authors, N×N neural networks are trained for pair wise classification. These experts then organized in N competing teams (CANNT) to aggregate decisions of these NXN experts. Then this procedure is repeated seven times and committees with seven members voted for final decision. By a commonest type voting, the accuracy is boosted around ten percent. Number of authors is seen not so effective on the accuracy of the authentication, and around 80% accuracy is achieved for any number of authors

    Computational Sociolinguistics: A Survey

    Language is a social phenomenon and variation is inherent to its social nature. Recently, there has been a surge of interest within the computational linguistics (CL) community in the social dimension of language. In this article we present a survey of the emerging field of "Computational Sociolinguistics" that reflects this increased interest. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of CL research on sociolinguistic themes, featuring topics such as the relation between language and social identity, language use in social interaction and multilingual communication. Moreover, we demonstrate the potential for synergy between the research communities involved, by showing how the large-scale data-driven methods that are widely used in CL can complement existing sociolinguistic studies, and how sociolinguistics can inform and challenge the methods and assumptions employed in CL studies. We hope to convey the possible benefits of a closer collaboration between the two communities and conclude with a discussion of open challenges.Comment: To appear in Computational Linguistics.     Detecting Popularity of Ideas and Individuals in Online Community

    Research in the last decade has prioritized the effects of online texts and online behaviors on user information prediction. However, the previous research overlooks the overall meaning of online texts and more detailed features about users’ online behaviors. The purpose of the research is to detect the adopted ideas, the popularity of ideas, and the popularity of individuals by identifying the overall meaning of online texts and the centrality features based on user’s online interactions within an online community. To gain insights into the research questions, the online discussions on MyStarbucksIdea website is examined in this research. MyStarbucksIdea had launched since 2008 that encouraged people to submit new ideas for improving Starbuck’s products and services. Starbucks had adopted hundreds of ideas from this crowdsourcing platform. Based on the example of the MyStarbucksIdea community, a new document representation approach, Doc2Vec, synthesized with the users’ centrality features was unitized in this research. Additionally, it also is essential to study the surface-level features of online texts, the sentiment features of online texts, and the features of users’ online behaviors to determine the idea adoption as well as the popularity of ideas and individuals in the online community. Furthermore, supervised machine learning approaches, including Logistic Regression, Support Vector Machine, and Random Forest, with the adjustments for the imbalanced classes, served as the classifiers for the experiments. The results of the experiments showed that the classifications of the idea adoption, the popularity of ideas, and the popularity of individuals were all considered successful. The overall meaning of idea texts and user’s centrality features were most accurate in detecting the adopted ideas and the popularity of ideas. The overall meaning of idea texts and the features of users’ online behaviors were most accurate in detecting the popularity of individuals. These results are in accord with the results of the previous studies, which used behavioral and textual features to predict user information and enhance the previous studies\u27 results by providing the new document embedding approach and the centrality features. The models used in this research can become a much-needed tool for the popularity predictions of future research

    A planetary nervous system for social mining and collective awareness

    We present a research roadmap of a Planetary Nervous System (PNS), capable of sensing and mining the digital breadcrumbs of human activities and unveiling the knowledge hidden in the big data for addressing the big questions about social complexity. We envision the PNS as a globally distributed, self-organizing, techno-social system for answering analytical questions about the status of world-wide society, based on three pillars: social sensing, social mining and the idea of trust networks and privacy-aware social mining. We discuss the ingredients of a science and a technology necessary to build the PNS upon the three mentioned pillars, beyond the limitations of their respective state-of-art. Social sensing is aimed at developing better methods for harvesting the big data from the techno-social ecosystem and make them available for mining, learning and analysis at a properly high abstraction level. Social mining is the problem of discovering patterns and models of human behaviour from the sensed data across the various social dimensions by data mining, machine learning and social network analysis. Trusted networks and privacy-aware social mining is aimed at creating a new deal around the questions of privacy and data ownership empowering individual persons with full awareness and control on own personal data, so that users may allow access and use of their data for their own good and the common good. The PNS will provide a goal-oriented knowledge discovery framework, made of technology and people, able to configure itself to the aim of answering questions about the pulse of global society. Given an analytical request, the PNS activates a process composed by a variety of interconnected tasks exploiting the social sensing and mining methods within the transparent ecosystem provided by the trusted network. The PNS we foresee is the key tool for individual and collective awareness for the knowledge society. We need such a tool for everyone to become fully aware of how powerful is the knowledge of our society we can achieve by leveraging our wisdom as a crowd, and how important is that everybody participates both as a consumer and as a producer of the social knowledge, for it to become a trustable, accessible, safe and useful public good.Seventh Framework Programme (European Commission) (grant agreement No. 284709

    Social media as a data gathering tool for international business qualitative research: opportunities and challenges

    Lusophone African (LA) multinational enterprises (MNEs) are becoming a significant pan-African and global economic force regarding their international presence and influence. However, given the extreme poverty and lack of development in their home markets, many LA enterprises seeking to internationalize lack resources and legitimacy in international markets. Compared to higher income emerging markets, Lusophone enterprises in Africa face more significant challenges in their internationalization efforts. Concomitantly, conducting significant international business (IB) research in these markets to understand these MNEs internationalization strategies can be a very daunting task. The fast-growing rise of social media on the Internet, however, provides an opportunity for IB researchers to examine new phenomena in these markets in innovative ways. Unfortunately, for various reasons, qualitative researchers in IB have not fully embraced this opportunity. This article studies the use of social media in qualitative research in the field of IB. It offers an illustrative case based on qualitative research on internationalization modes of LAMNEs conducted by the authors in Angola and Mozambique using social media to identify and qualify the population sample, as well as interact with subjects and collect data. It discusses some of the challenges of using social media in those regions of Africa and suggests how scholars can design their studies to capitalize on social media and corresponding data as a tool for qualitative research.
