In this context, open standards are (at present) less common than closed standards. Nevertheless, open standards are more useful in terms of sustainable access to multimedia content.     Performance and Complexity Co-Evaluations of MPEG4-ALS Compression Standard for Low-Latency Music Compression

    In this thesis compression ratio and latency of different classical audio music tracks are analyzed with various encoder options of MPEG4ALS. Different tracks of audio music tracks are tested with MPEG4-ALS coder with different options to find the optimum values for various parameters to obtain maximum compression ratio with minimum CPU time (encoder and decoder time). Optimum frame length for which the compression ratio saturates for music audio is found out by analyzing the results when different classical music tracks are experimented with various frame lengths. Also music tracks with varying sampling rate are tested and the compression ratio and latency relationship with sampling rate are analyzed and plotted. It is found that the compression gain rate was higher when the codec complexity is less, and joint channel correlation and long term correlations are not significant and latency trade off make the more complex codec options unsuitable for applications where latency is critical. When the two entropy coding options, Rice code and BGMC (Block Gilbert-Moore Codes) are applied on various classical music tracks, it was obvious that the Rice code is more suitable for low-latency applications compared to the more complex BGMC coding, as BGMC improved compression performance with the expense of latency, making it unsuitable in real-time applications

    Routine tests for both planning and evaluating image quality in tele-echocardiography

    Both in real-time and "store & forward" tele-echocardiography (T-E), a coding process has to be applied to the echocardiography videoclips in order to limit the bandwidth needed and adapt it to the bandwidths furnished by network providers. The compression process degrades the videoclips, affecting thus the quality of the videoclips and potentially compromising the diagnostic accuracy of the T-E. In this work the authors investigated on the use of automatic tools for the video quality assessment by means of objective methods with particular care to the role of the system administrator. As the use of tests on video quality assessment (based on subjective methods) is hampered by the high number of needed resources (persons, laboratories and time). The use of valid objective methods is thus desirable. The study reviewed different tools with this specific aim. One of the more suitable tool was found to be represented by a software package designed by the Institute of Telecommunication Sciences and the National Telecommunication and Information Administration, the NTIA/ITS VQM tool. This tool gives back objective-quantitative data as outcomes, however embeds models emulating the subjective perception. This study reviewed and analyzed in depth the functionalities of the tool to improve the image quality in TE over the network. The tool was also found suitable for a more general process of T-E assessment, from a health technology assessment (HTA) perspective

    Cross layer techniques for flexible transport protocol using UDP-Lite over a satellite network

    Traditional real-time multimedia and streaming services have utilised UDP over RTP. Wireless transmission, by its nature, may introduce a variable, sometimes high bit error ratio. Current transport layer protocols drop all corrupted packets, in contrast, protocols such as UDP-Lite allow error-resilient applications to be supported in the networking stack. This paper presents experimental quantitative performance metrics using H.264 and UDP Lite for the next generation transport of IP multimedia, and discusses the architectural implications for enhancing performance of a wireless and/or satellite environment

    This article proposes the Implicit Packet Meta Header(IPMH) as a standard method to compute and represent common QoS properties of the Application Data Units (ADU) of multimedia streams using legacy and proprietary streams’ headers (e.g. Real-time Transport Protocol headers). The use of IPMH by mechanisms located at different layers of the communication architecture will allow implementing fine per-packet selfoptimization of communication services regarding the actual application requirements. A case study showing how IPMH is used by error control mechanisms in the context of wireless networks is presented in order to demonstrate the feasibility and advantages of this approach
