    A competencies framework of visual impairments for enabling shared understanding in design

    Existing work in Human Computer Interaction and accessibility research has long sought to investigate the experiences of people with visual impairments in order to address their needs through technology design and integrate their participation into different stages of the design process. Yet challenges remain regarding how disabilities are framed in technology design and the extent of involvement of disabled people within it. Furthermore, accessibility is often considered a specialised job and misunderstandings or assumptions about visually impaired people’s experiences and needs occur outside dedicated fields. This thesis presents an ethnomethodology-informed design critique for supporting awareness and shared understanding of visual impairments and accessibility that centres on their experiences, abilities, and participation in early-stage design. This work is rooted in an in-depth empirical investigation of the interactional competencies that people with visual impairments exhibit through their use of technology, which informs and shapes the concept of a Competencies Framework of Visual Impairments. Although past research has established stances for considering the individual abilities of disabled people and other social and relational factors in technology design, by drawing on ethnomethodology and its interest in situated competence this thesis employs an interactional perspective to investigate the practical accomplishments of visually impaired people. Thus, this thesis frames visual impairments in terms of competencies to be considered in the design process, rather than a deficiency or problem to be fixed through technology. Accordingly, this work favours supporting awareness and reflection rather than the design of particular solutions, which are also strongly needed for advancing accessible design at large. This PhD thesis comprises two main empirical studies branched into three different investigations. The first and second investigations are based on a four-month ethnographic study with visually impaired participants examining their everyday technology practices. The third investigation comprises the design and implementation of a workshop study developed to include people with and without visual impairments in collaborative reflections about technology and accessibility. As such, each investigation informed the ones that followed, revisiting and refining concepts and design materials throughout the thesis. Although ethnomethodology is the overarching approach running through this PhD project, each investigation has a different focus of enquiry: • The first is focused on analysing participants’ technology practices and unearthing the interactional competencies enabling them. • The second is focused on analysing technology demonstrations, which were a pervasive phenomenon recorded during fieldwork, and the work of demonstrating as exhibited by visually impaired participants. • Lastly, the third investigation defines a workshop approach employing video demonstrations and a deck of reflective design cards as building blocks for enabling shared understanding among people with and without visual impairments from different technology backgrounds; that is, users, technologists, designers, and researchers. Overall, this thesis makes several contributions to audiences within and outside academia, such as the detailed accounts of some of the main technology practices of people with visual impairments and the methodological analysis of demonstrations in empirical Human Computer Interaction and accessibility research. Moreover, the main contribution lies in the conceptualisation of a Competencies Framework of Visual Impairments from the empirical analysis of interactional competencies and their practical exhibition through demonstrations, as well as the creation and use of a deck of cards that encapsulates the competencies and external elements involved in the everyday interactional accomplishments of people with visual impairments. All these contributions are lastly brought together in the implementation of the workshop approach that enabled participants to interact with and learn from each other. Thus, this thesis builds upon and advances contemporary strands of work in Human Computer Interaction that call for re-orienting how visual impairments and, overall, disabilities are framed in technology design, and ultimately for re-shaping the design practice itself

    Dissertação de mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação MultilingueNo âmbito de um esforço crescente de internacionalização, a Escola de Medicina da Universidade do Minho criou o Núcleo de Internacionalização (IAO), cujo objetivo principal é apoiar todas as atividades desenvolvidas nas redes internacionais existentes na Escola e estimular novas iniciativas. Além disso, pretende também apoiar a dinamização de um ambiente de aprendizagem global no qual estudantes, docentes e membros de serviços administrativos possam usufruir dos privilégios transformativos de uma educação internacional e em expansão, construindo, assim, um espaço de diálogo e partilha. Com o objetivo de promover a internacionalização da Escola, a EM promove e participa em vários Programas de Mobilidade nacionais e internacionais. O objetivo do presente projeto de estágio é apresentar e descrever o trabalho desenvolvido durante o estágio curricular correspondente ao segundo semestre do 2º ano do Mestrado em Tradução e Comunicação Multilingue da Universidade do Minho. Este estágio durou quatro meses, no Núcleo Internacionalização, da Escola de Medicina, localizado no Campus de Gualtar da UMinho, em Braga. Este relatório consistirá de um breve enquadramento teórico sobre tradução médica, as principais caraterísticas e dificuldades, assim como o papel do tradutor enquanto especialista nesta área e a função das cat tools nesta área da tradução. Serão apresentadas as vantagens e desvantagens da utilização de ferramentas de tradução e a sua utilidade em tradução médica, especialmente durante o meu estágio.As part of a growing internationalization effort, the School of Medicine of the University of Minho created the International Affairs Office (IAO), whose main objective is to support all activities carried out in the international networks existing at the School and to encourage new initiatives. In addition, it also intends to support the promotion of a global learning environment in which students, teachers and members of administrative services can enjoy the transformative privileges of an international and expanding education, thus building a space for dialogue and sharing. With the aim of promoting the internationalization of the School, EMED promotes and participates in several national and international Mobility Programs. The objective of this internship report is to present and describe the work carried out during the curricular internship corresponding to the second semester of the second year of the Master in Translation and Multilingual Communication at the University of Minho. This internship lasted four months, at the International Affairs Office, at the School of Medicine, located at the UMinho’s Gualtar Campus, in Braga. This report will consist of a brief theoretical framework on medical translation, the main characteristics and difficulties, as well as the role of the translator as a specialist in this area and the role of cat tools in this area of translation. The advantages and disadvantages of using translation tools and their usefulness in medical translation will be presented, especially during my internship

    Definiteness effects and competition in tenses and aspects

    This dissertations explores the semantics and pragmatics of tense and aspect constructions in three groups of languages: I. English; II. French, Italian, German; III. Mandarin Chinese. The basic claims of this dissertation are: (i) the English past tense is lexically ambiguous between an anaphoric and a uniqueness reading; (ii) the different properties of the present perfect construction in English versus French, Italian and German follow from the competition between the present perfect with the alternative past tense and the different set of alternatives available in these languages; (iii) the distribution of the Mandarin Chinese perfective particles reflects asymmetry in their presuppositions, such as anaphoricity and anti-resultativeness; (iv) Mandarin Chinese differs from the languages in group I and II in that it establishes anaphoric dependency in the domain of eventualities, not times; (v) the crosslinguistic distribution of perfect-like tense-aspectual constructions follows from similar semantic-pragmatic strategies, namely the competition between alternatives from a set of general categories (anaphoric, unique, neutral, and antiresulative)

    Whose Heritage?

    This edited collection challenges and re-imagines what is ‘heritage’ in Britain as a globalised, vernacular, cosmopolitan ‘post-nation’. It takes its inspiration from the foundational work of public intellectual Stuart Hall (1932-2014). Hall was instrumental in calling out embedded elitist conceptions of ‘The Heritage’ of Britain. The book’s authors challenge us to reconsider what is valued about Britain’s past, its culture and its citizens. Populist discourses around the world, including Brexit and ‘culture war’ declarations in the UK, demonstrate how heritage and ideas of the past are mobilised in racist politics. The multidisciplinary chapters of this book offer critical inspections of these politics, and dig deeply into the problems of theory, policy and practice in today’s academia, society and heritage sector. The volume challenges the lack of action since Hall rebuked ‘The Heritage’ twenty years ago. The authors featured here are predominantly Black Britons, academics and practitioners engaged in culture and heritage, spurred by the killing of George Floyd and the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement to contest racist practices and structures that support them. The primary audience will be academics, but it will also attract culture sector practitioners and heritage institutions. However, the book is particularly aimed at scholars and community members who identify as Black, who are centrally concerned with questions of identity and race in British society. Its Open Access status will facilitate access to the book by all groups in society

    The extent of Kuwaiti Islamic banks restrict the use of Islamic financing tools in their financial operations: a field study

    This research aims to identify the extent to of Kuwaiti Islamic banks adhere to the use of Islamic financing tools in their financial operations. The study population consists of all (5) banks listed on the Kuwait Stock Exchange. As for the study sample, (100) respondents were selected from Financial managers, accountants, and workers in finance and investment departments work in these banks. The questionnaire was used as a tool for collecting primary data. The results showed that Kuwaiti Islamic banks adhere to the use of Islamic financing tools represented in Murabaha, Musharaka and Mudaraba in their financial operations to a high degree. The study recommended that Kuwaiti Islamic banks should be encouraged to play a more role in Murabaha operations and find appropriate solutions to technical obstacles and culture-related procedures that prevent the provision of Islamic financing through Murabaha
