Precoder design for space-time coded systems over correlated Rayleigh fading channels using convex optimization
A class of computationally efficient linear precoders for space-time block coded multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems is derived based on the minimization of the exact symbol error rate (SER) and its upper bound. Both correlations at the transmitter and receiver are assumed to be present, and only statistical channel state information in the form of the transmit and receive correlation matrices is assumed to be available at the transmitter. The convexity of the design based on SER minimization is established and exploited. The advantage of the developed technique is its low complexity. We also find various relationships of the proposed designs to the existing precoding techniques, and derive very simple closed-form precoders for special cases such as two or three receive antennas and constant receive correlation. The numerical simulations illustrate the excellent SER performance of the proposed precoders
A virtual MIMO dual-hop architecture based on hybrid spatial modulation
International audienceIn this paper, we propose a novel Virtual Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (VMIMO) architecture based on the concept of Spatial Modulation (SM). Using a dual-hop and Decode-and-Forward protocol, we form a distributed system, called Dual-Hop Hybrid SM (DH-HSM). DH-HSM conveys information from a Source Node (SN) to a Destination Node (DN) via multiple Relay Nodes (RNs). The spatial position of the RNs is exploited for transferring information in addition to, or even without, a conventional symbol. In order to increase the performance of our architecture, while keeping the complexity of the RNs and DN low, we employ linear precoding using Channel State Information (CSI) at the SN. In this way, we form a Receive-Spatial Modulation (R-SM) pattern from the SN to the RNs, which is able to employ a centralized coordinated or a distributed uncoordinated detection algorithm at the RNs. In addition, we focus on the SN and propose two regularized linear precoding methods that employ realistic Imperfect Channel State Information at the Transmitter. The power of each precoder is analyzed theoretically. Using the Bit Error Rate (BER) metric, we evaluate our architecture against the following benchmark systems: 1) single relay; 2) best relay selection; 3) distributed Space Time Block Coding (STBC) VMIMO scheme; and 4) the direct communication link. We show that DH-HSM is able to achieve significant Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) gains, which can be as high as 10.5 dB for a very large scale system setup. In order to verify our simulation results, we provide an analytical framework for the evaluation of the Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP)
A framework for joint design of pilot sequence and linear precoder
Most performance measures of pilot-assisted multiple-input multiple-output systems are functions of the linear precoder and the pilot sequence. A framework for the optimization of these two parameters is proposed, based on a matrix-valued generalization of the concept of effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) introduced in the famous work by Hassibi and Hochwald. Our framework aims to extend the work of Hassibi and Hochwald by allowing for transmit-side fading correlations, and by considering a class of utility functions of said effective SNR matrix, most notably including the well-known capacity lower bound used by Hassibi and Hochwald. We tackle the joint optimization problem by recasting the optimization of the precoder (resp. pilot sequence) subject to a fixed pilot sequence (resp. precoder) into a convex problem. Furthermore, we prove that joint optimality requires that the eigenbases of the precoder and pilot sequence be both aligned along the eigenbasis of the channel correlation matrix. We finally describe how to wrap all studied subproblems into an iteration that converges to a local optimum of the joint optimization.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Transmit Precoding for MIMO Systems with Partial CSI and Discrete-Constellation Inputs
In this paper, we consider the transmit linear precoding problem for MIMO systems with discrete-constellation inputs. We assume that the receiver has perfect channel state information (CSI) and the transmitter only has partial CSI, namely, the channel covariance information. We first consider MIMO systems over frequency-flat fading channels. We design the optimal linear precoder based on direct maximization of mutual information over the MIMO channels with discrete-constellation inputs. It turns out that the optimal linear precoder is a non-diagonal non-unitary matrix. Then, we consider MIMO systems over frequency selective fading channels via extending our method to MIMO-OFDM systems. To keep reasonable computational complexity of solving the linear precoding matrix, we propose a sub-optimal approach to restrict the precoding matrix as a block-diagonal matrix. This approach has near-optimal performance when we integrate it with a properly chosen interleaver. Numerical examples show that for MIMO systems over frequency flat fading channels, our proposed optimal linear precoder enjoys 6-9 dB gain compared to the same system without linear precoder. For MIMO-OFDM systems, our reduced-complexity sub-optimal linear precoder captures 3-6 dB gain compared to the same system with no precoding. Moreover, for those MIMO systems employing a linear precoder designed based on Gaussian inputs with gap approximation technique for discrete-constellation inputs, significant loss may occur when the signal-to-noise ratio is larger than 0 dB
Energy efficiency of mmWave massive MIMO precoding with low-resolution DACs
With the congestion of the sub-6 GHz spectrum, the interest in massive
multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating on millimeter wave
spectrum grows. In order to reduce the power consumption of such massive MIMO
systems, hybrid analog/digital transceivers and application of low-resolution
digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital converters have been recently proposed. In
this work, we investigate the energy efficiency of quantized hybrid
transmitters equipped with a fully/partially-connected phase-shifting network
composed of active/passive phase-shifters and compare it to that of quantized
digital precoders. We introduce a quantized single-user MIMO system model based
on an additive quantization noise approximation considering realistic power
consumption and loss models to evaluate the spectral and energy efficiencies of
the transmit precoding methods. Simulation results show that
partially-connected hybrid precoders can be more energy-efficient compared to
digital precoders, while fully-connected hybrid precoders exhibit poor energy
efficiency in general. Also, the topology of phase-shifting components offers
an energy-spectral efficiency trade-off: active phase-shifters provide higher
data rates, while passive phase-shifters maintain better energy efficiency.Comment: Published in IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Signal Processin
