Physics Inspired Optimization on Semantic Transfer Features: An Alternative Method for Room Layout Estimation
In this paper, we propose an alternative method to estimate room layouts of
cluttered indoor scenes. This method enjoys the benefits of two novel
techniques. The first one is semantic transfer (ST), which is: (1) a
formulation to integrate the relationship between scene clutter and room layout
into convolutional neural networks; (2) an architecture that can be end-to-end
trained; (3) a practical strategy to initialize weights for very deep networks
under unbalanced training data distribution. ST allows us to extract highly
robust features under various circumstances, and in order to address the
computation redundance hidden in these features we develop a principled and
efficient inference scheme named physics inspired optimization (PIO). PIO's
basic idea is to formulate some phenomena observed in ST features into
mechanics concepts. Evaluations on public datasets LSUN and Hedau show that the

Operator precedence for data-dependent grammars
Constructing parsers based on declarative specification of operator precedence is a very old research topic, and there are various existing approaches. However, these approaches are either tied to a particular parsing technique, or cannot deal with all corner cases found in programming languages. In this paper we present an implementation of declarative specification of operator precedence for general parsing that (1) is independent of the underlying parsing algorithm, (2) does not require any grammar transformation that increases the size of the grammar, (3) preserves the shape of parse trees of the original, natural grammar, and (4) can deal with intricate cases of operator precedence found in functional programming languages such as OCaml. Our new approach to operator precedence is formulated using data-dependent grammars, which extend context-free grammars with arbitrary computation, variable binding and constraints. We implemented our approach using Iguana, a data-dependent parsing framework, and evaluated it by parsing Java and OCaml source files. The results show that our approach is practical for parsing programming languages with complicated operator precedence rules
Data-Driven Shape Analysis and Processing
Data-driven methods play an increasingly important role in discovering
geometric, structural, and semantic relationships between 3D shapes in
collections, and applying this analysis to support intelligent modeling,
editing, and visualization of geometric data. In contrast to traditional
approaches, a key feature of data-driven approaches is that they aggregate
information from a collection of shapes to improve the analysis and processing
of individual shapes. In addition, they are able to learn models that reason
about properties and relationships of shapes without relying on hard-coded
rules or explicitly programmed instructions. We provide an overview of the main
concepts and components of these techniques, and discuss their application to
shape classification, segmentation, matching, reconstruction, modeling and
exploration, as well as scene analysis and synthesis, through reviewing the
literature and relating the existing works with both qualitative and numerical
comparisons. We conclude our report with ideas that can inspire future research
in data-driven shape analysis and processing.Comment: 10 pages, 19 figure
A Domain-Specific Language and Editor for Parallel Particle Methods
Domain-specific languages (DSLs) are of increasing importance in scientific
high-performance computing to reduce development costs, raise the level of
abstraction and, thus, ease scientific programming. However, designing and
implementing DSLs is not an easy task, as it requires knowledge of the
application domain and experience in language engineering and compilers.
Consequently, many DSLs follow a weak approach using macros or text generators,
which lack many of the features that make a DSL a comfortable for programmers.
Some of these features---e.g., syntax highlighting, type inference, error
reporting, and code completion---are easily provided by language workbenches,
which combine language engineering techniques and tools in a common ecosystem.
In this paper, we present the Parallel Particle-Mesh Environment (PPME), a DSL
and development environment for numerical simulations based on particle methods
and hybrid particle-mesh methods. PPME uses the meta programming system (MPS),
a projectional language workbench. PPME is the successor of the Parallel
Particle-Mesh Language (PPML), a Fortran-based DSL that used conventional
implementation strategies. We analyze and compare both languages and
demonstrate how the programmer's experience can be improved using static
analyses and projectional editing. Furthermore, we present an explicit domain
model for particle abstractions and the first formal type system for particle

A Hybrid Environment for Syntax-Semantic Tagging
The thesis describes the application of the relaxation labelling algorithm to
NLP disambiguation. Language is modelled through context constraint inspired on
Constraint Grammars. The constraints enable the use of a real value statind
"compatibility". The technique is applied to POS tagging, Shallow Parsing and
Word Sense Disambigation. Experiments and results are reported. The proposed
approach enables the use of multi-feature constraint models, the simultaneous
resolution of several NL disambiguation tasks, and the collaboration of
