    6G for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) Communications: Enabling Technologies, Challenges, and Opportunities

    We are on the cusp of a new era of connected autonomous vehicles with unprecedented user experiences, tremendously improved road safety and air quality, highly diverse transportation environments and use cases, as well as a plethora of advanced applications. Realizing this grand vision requires a significantly enhanced vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication network which should be extremely intelligent and capable of concurrently supporting hyper-fast, ultra-reliable, and low-latency massive information exchange. It is anticipated that the sixth-generation (6G) communication systems will fulfill these requirements of the next-generation V2X. In this article, we outline a series of key enabling technologies from a range of domains, such as new materials, algorithms, and system architectures. Aiming for truly intelligent transportation systems, we envision that machine learning will play an instrumental role for advanced vehicular communication and networking. To this end, we provide an overview on the recent advances of machine learning in 6G vehicular networks. To stimulate future research in this area, we discuss the strength, open challenges, maturity, and enhancing areas of these technologies

    Advanced OFDM Receivers for Underwater Acoustic Communications

    In underwater acoustic (UWA) communications, an emerging research area is the high data rate and robust transmission using multi-carrier modulation, such as orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). However, difficulties in the OFDM communications include Doppler estimation/compensation, beamforming, and channel estimation/equalization. In this thesis, to overcome these difficulties, advanced low complexity OFDM receivers of high performance are developed. A novel low complexity Doppler estimation method based on computing multi-channel autocorrelation is proposed, which provides accurate Doppler estimates. In simulations and sea trials with guard-free OFDM signal transmission, this method outperforms conventional single-channel autocorrelation method, and shows a less complexity than the method based on computing the cross-ambiguity function between the received and pilot signals with a comparable performance. Space-time clustering in UWA channels is investigated, and a low complexity multi-antenna receiver including a beamformer that exploits this channel property is proposed. Various space-time processing techniques are investigated and compared, and the results show that the space-time clustering demonstrates the best performance. Direction of arrival (DOA) fluctuations in time-varying UWA channels are investigated, and a further developed beamforming technique with DOA tracking is proposed. In simulation and sea trials, this beamforming is compared with the beamforming without DOA tracking. The results show that the tracking beamforming demonstrates a better performance. For the channel estimation, two low complexity sparse recursive least squares adaptive filters, based on diagonal loading and homotopy, are presented. In two different UWA communication systems, the two filters are investigated and compared with various existing adaptive filters, and demonstrate better performance. For the simulations, the Waymark baseband UWA channel model is used, to simulate the virtual signal transmission in time-varying UWA channels. This model is modified from the previous computationally efficient Waymark passband model, improving the computational efficiency further

    This reprint aims to collect state-of-the-art research contributions that address challenges in the emerging 5G networks design, dimensioning and optimization. Designing, dimensioning and optimization of communication networks resources and services have been an inseparable part of telecom network development. The latter must convey a large volume of traffic, providing service to traffic streams with highly differentiated requirements in terms of bit-rate and service time, required quality of service and quality of experience parameters. Such a communication infrastructure presents many important challenges, such as the study of necessary multi-layer cooperation, new protocols, performance evaluation of different network parts, low layer network design, network management and security issues, and new technologies in general, which will be discussed in this book

    Advanced receivers for distributed cooperation in mobile ad hoc networks

    Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are rapidly deployable wireless communications systems, operating with minimal coordination in order to avoid spectral efficiency losses caused by overhead. Cooperative transmission schemes are attractive for MANETs, but the distributed nature of such protocols comes with an increased level of interference, whose impact is further amplified by the need to push the limits of energy and spectral efficiency. Hence, the impact of interference has to be mitigated through with the use PHY layer signal processing algorithms with reasonable computational complexity. Recent advances in iterative digital receiver design techniques exploit approximate Bayesian inference and derivative message passing techniques to improve the capabilities of well-established turbo detectors. In particular, expectation propagation (EP) is a flexible technique which offers attractive complexity-performance trade-offs in situations where conventional belief propagation is limited by computational complexity. Moreover, thanks to emerging techniques in deep learning, such iterative structures are cast into deep detection networks, where learning the algorithmic hyper-parameters further improves receiver performance. In this thesis, EP-based finite-impulse response decision feedback equalizers are designed, and they achieve significant improvements, especially in high spectral efficiency applications, over more conventional turbo-equalization techniques, while having the advantage of being asymptotically predictable. A framework for designing frequency-domain EP-based receivers is proposed, in order to obtain detection architectures with low computational complexity. This framework is theoretically and numerically analysed with a focus on channel equalization, and then it is also extended to handle detection for time-varying channels and multiple-antenna systems. The design of multiple-user detectors and the impact of channel estimation are also explored to understand the capabilities and limits of this framework. Finally, a finite-length performance prediction method is presented for carrying out link abstraction for the EP-based frequency domain equalizer.     Self-concatenated coding for wireless communication systems

    In this thesis, we have explored self-concatenated coding schemes that are designed for transmission over Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels. We designed both the symbol-based Self-ConcatenatedCodes considered using Trellis Coded Modulation (SECTCM) and bit-based Self- Concatenated Convolutional Codes (SECCC) using a Recursive Systematic Convolutional (RSC) encoder as constituent codes, respectively. The design of these codes was carried out with the aid of Extrinsic Information Transfer (EXIT) charts. The EXIT chart based design has been found an efficient tool in finding the decoding convergence threshold of the constituent codes. Additionally, in order to recover the information loss imposed by employing binary rather than non-binary schemes, a soft decision demapper was introduced in order to exchange extrinsic information withthe SECCC decoder. To analyse this information exchange 3D-EXIT chart analysis was invoked for visualizing the extrinsic information exchange between the proposed Iteratively Decoding aided SECCC and soft-decision demapper (SECCC-ID). Some of the proposed SECTCM, SECCC and SECCC-ID schemes perform within about 1 dB from the AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels’ capacity. A union bound analysis of SECCC codes was carried out to find the corresponding Bit Error Ratio (BER) floors. The union bound of SECCCs was derived for communications over both AWGN and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels, based on a novel interleaver concept.Application of SECCCs in both UltraWideBand (UWB) and state-of-the-art video-telephone schemes demonstrated its practical benefits.In order to further exploit the benefits of the low complexity design offered by SECCCs we explored their application in a distributed coding scheme designed for cooperative communications, where iterative detection is employed by exchanging extrinsic information between the decoders of SECCC and RSC at the destination. In the first transmission period of cooperation, the relay receives the potentially erroneous data and attempts to recover the information. The recovered information is then re-encoded at the relay using an RSC encoder. In the second transmission period this information is then retransmitted to the destination. The resultant symbols transmitted from the source and relay nodes can be viewed as the coded symbols of a three-component parallel-concatenated encoder. At the destination a Distributed Binary Self-Concatenated Coding scheme using Iterative Decoding (DSECCC-ID) was employed, where the two decoders (SECCC and RSC) exchange their extrinsic information. It was shown that the DSECCC-ID is a low-complexity scheme, yet capable of approaching the Discrete-input Continuous-output Memoryless Channels’s (DCMC) capacity.Finally, we considered coding schemes designed for two nodes communicating with each other with the aid of a relay node, where the relay receives information from the two nodes in the first transmission period. At the relay node we combine a powerful Superposition Coding (SPC) scheme with SECCC. It is assumed that decoding errors may be encountered at the relay node. The relay node then broadcasts this information in the second transmission period after re-encoding it, again, using a SECCC encoder. At the destination, the amalgamated block of Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) scheme combined with SECCC then detects and decodes the signal either with or without the aid of a priori information. Our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme is capable of reliably operating at a low BER for transmission over both AWGN and uncorrelated Rayleigh fading channels.     Measurement, Modeling, and OFDM Synchronization for the Wideband Mobile-to-Mobile Channel

    Wideband measurements of the mobile-to-mobile channel, especially of the harshest channels, are necessary for proper design and certification testing of mobile-to-mobile communications systems. A complete measurement implies that the Doppler and delay characteristics are measured jointly. However, such measurements have not previously been published. The main objective of the proposed research is to develop channel models for specific scenarios from data obtained in a wideband mobile-to-mobile measurement campaign in the 5.9 GHz frequency band. For this purpose we developed a channel sounding system including a novel combined waveform. In order to quantify and qualify either the recorded channel or the proposed generated channel, we developed a simulation test-bed that includes all the characteristics of the proposed digital short range communications (DSRC) standard. The resulting channel models needed to comply with the specifications required by hardware channel emulators or software channel simulators. From the obtained models, we selected one to be included in the IEEE 802.11p standard certification test.
