Robotic Wireless Sensor Networks
In this chapter, we present a literature survey of an emerging, cutting-edge,
and multi-disciplinary field of research at the intersection of Robotics and
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) which we refer to as Robotic Wireless Sensor
Networks (RWSN). We define a RWSN as an autonomous networked multi-robot system
that aims to achieve certain sensing goals while meeting and maintaining
certain communication performance requirements, through cooperative control,
learning and adaptation. While both of the component areas, i.e., Robotics and
WSN, are very well-known and well-explored, there exist a whole set of new
opportunities and research directions at the intersection of these two fields
which are relatively or even completely unexplored. One such example would be
the use of a set of robotic routers to set up a temporary communication path
between a sender and a receiver that uses the controlled mobility to the
advantage of packet routing. We find that there exist only a limited number of
articles to be directly categorized as RWSN related works whereas there exist a
range of articles in the robotics and the WSN literature that are also relevant
to this new field of research. To connect the dots, we first identify the core
problems and research trends related to RWSN such as connectivity,
localization, routing, and robust flow of information. Next, we classify the
existing research on RWSN as well as the relevant state-of-the-arts from
robotics and WSN community according to the problems and trends identified in
the first step. Lastly, we analyze what is missing in the existing literature,
and identify topics that require more research attention in the future
Opportunistic Localization Scheme Based on Linear Matrix Inequality
Enabling self-localization of mobile nodes is an important problem that has been widely studied in the literature.
The general conclusions is that an accurate localization
requires either sophisticated hardware (GPS, UWB, ultrasounds transceiver) or a dedicated infrastructure (GSM, WLAN). In this paper we tackle the problem from a different and rather new perspective: we investigate how localization performance can be improved by means of a cooperative and opportunistic data exchange among the nodes. We consider a target node, completely unaware of its own position, and a number of mobile nodes with some self-localization capabilities. When the opportunity occurs, the target node can exchange data with in-range mobile nodes. This opportunistic data exchange is then used by the target node to refine its position estimate by using a technique based on Linear Matrix Inequalities and barycentric algorithm. To investigate the performance of such an opportunistic localization algorithm, we define a simple mathematical model that describes the opportunistic interactions and, then, we run several computer simulations for analyzing the effect of the nodes duty-cycle and of the native self-localization error modeling considered. The results show that the opportunistic interactions can actually improve the self-localization accuracy of a strayed node in many different scenarios
Operating ITS-G5 DSRC over Unlicensed Bands: A City-Scale Performance Evaluation
Future Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) will be equipped with a large
set of sensors. The large amount of generated sensor data is expected to be
exchanged with other CAVs and the road-side infrastructure. Both in Europe and
the US, Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) systems, based on the IEEE
802.11p Physical Layer, are key enabler for the communication among vehicles.
Given the expected market penetration of connected vehicles, the licensed band
of 75 MHz, dedicated to DSRC communications, is expected to become increasingly
congested. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a vehicular
communication system, operated over the unlicensed bands 2.4 GHz - 2.5 GHz and
5.725 GHz - 5.875 GHz. Our experimental evaluation was carried out in a testing
track in the centre of Bristol, UK and our system is a full-stack ETSI ITS-G5
implementation. Our performance investigation compares key communication
metrics (e.g., packet delivery rate, received signal strength indicator)
measured by operating our system over the licensed DSRC and the considered
unlicensed bands. In particular, when operated over the 2.4 GHz - 2.5 GHz band,
our system achieves comparable performance to the case when the DSRC band is
used. On the other hand, as soon as the system, is operated over the 5.725 GHz
- 5.875 GHz band, the packet delivery rate is 30% smaller compared to the case
when the DSRC band is employed. These findings prove that operating our system
over unlicensed ISM bands is a viable option. During our experimental

SAI: safety application identifier algorithm at MAC layer for vehicular safety message dissemination over LTE VANET networks
Vehicular safety applications have much significance in preventing road accidents and fatalities. Among others, cellular networks have been under investigation for the procurement of these applications subject to stringent requirements for latency, transmission parameters, and successful delivery of messages. Earlier contributions have studied utilization of Long-Term Evolution (LTE) under single cell, Friis radio, or simplified higher layer. In this paper, we study the utilization of LTE under multicell and multipath fading environment and introduce the use of adaptive awareness range. Then, we propose an algorithm that uses the concept of quality of service (QoS) class identifiers (QCIs) along with dynamic adaptive awareness range. Furthermore, we investigate the impact of background traffic on the proposed algorithm. Finally, we utilize medium access control (MAC) layer elements in order to fulfill vehicular application requirements through extensive system-level simulations. The results show that, by using an awareness range of up to 250âm, the LTE system is capable of fulfilling the safety application requirements for up to 10 beacons/s with 150 vehicles in an area of 2 Ă 2âkm2. The urban vehicular radio environment has a significant impact and decreases the probability for end-to-end delay to be â€100âms from 93%â97% to 76%â78% compared to the Friis radio environment. The proposed algorithm reduces the amount of vehicular application traffic from 21âMbps to 13âMbps, while improving the probability of end-to-end delay being â€100âms by 20%. Lastly, use of MAC layer control elements brings the processing of messages towards the edge of network increasing capacity of the system by about 50%
Benets of tight coupled architectures for the integration of GNSS receiver and Vanet transceiver
Vehicular adhoc networks (VANETs) are one emerging type of networks that will enable a broad range of applications such as public safety, traffic management, traveler information support and entertain ment. Whether wireless access may be asynchronous or synchronous (respectively as in the upcoming IEEE 8021.11p standard or in some alternative emerging solutions), a synchronization among nodes is required. Moreover, the information on position is needed to let vehicular services work and to correctly forward the messages. As a result, timing and positioning are a strong prerequisite of VANETs. Also the diffusion of enhanced GNSS Navigators paves the way to the integration between GNSS receivers and VANET transceiv ers. Quality-Aware Broadcasting Strategies for Position Estimation in VANETs
The dissemination of vehicle position data all over the network is a
fundamental task in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) operations, as
applications often need to know the position of other vehicles over a large
area. In such cases, inter-vehicular communications should be exploited to
satisfy application requirements, although congestion control mechanisms are
required to minimize the packet collision probability. In this work, we face
the issue of achieving accurate vehicle position estimation and prediction in a
VANET scenario. State of the art solutions to the problem try to broadcast the
positioning information periodically, so that vehicles can ensure that the
information their neighbors have about them is never older than the
inter-transmission period. However, the rate of decay of the information is not
deterministic in complex urban scenarios: the movements and maneuvers of
vehicles can often be erratic and unpredictable, making old positioning
information inaccurate or downright misleading. To address this problem, we
propose to use the Quality of Information (QoI) as the decision factor for
broadcasting. We implement a threshold-based strategy to distribute position
information whenever the positioning error passes a reference value, thereby
shifting the objective of the network to limiting the actual positioning error
and guaranteeing quality across the VANET. The threshold-based strategy can
reduce the network load by avoiding the transmission of redundant messages, as
well as improving the overall positioning accuracy by more than 20% in

Location-Quality-aware Policy Optimisation for Relay Selection in Mobile Networks
Relaying can improve the coverage and performance of wireless access
networks. In presence of a localisation system at the mobile nodes, the use of
such location estimates for relay node selection can be advantageous as such
information can be collected by access points in linear effort with respect to
number of mobile nodes (while the number of links grows quadratically).
However, the localisation error and the chosen update rate of location
information in conjunction with the mobility model affect the performance of
such location-based relay schemes; these parameters also need to be taken into
account in the design of optimal policies. This paper develops a Markov model
that can capture the joint impact of localisation errors and inaccuracies of
location information due to forwarding delays and mobility; the Markov model is
used to develop algorithms to determine optimal location-based relay policies
that take the aforementioned factors into account. The model is subsequently
used to analyse the impact of deployment parameter choices on the performance
of location-based relaying in WLAN scenarios with free-space propagation
