    Integrating big data into a sustainable mobility policy 2.0 planning support system

    It is estimated that each of us, on a daily basis, produces a bit more than 1 GB of digital content through our mobile phone and social networks activities, bank card payments, location-based positioning information, online activities, etc. However, the implementation of these large data amounts in city assets planning systems still remains a rather abstract idea for several reasons, including the fact that practical examples are still very strongly services-oriented, and are a largely unexplored and interdisciplinary field; hence, missing the cross-cutting dimension. In this paper, we describe the Policy 2.0 concept and integrate user generated content into Policy 2.0 platform for sustainable mobility planning. By means of a real-life example, we demonstrate the applicability of such a big data integration approach to smart cities planning process. Observed benefits range from improved timeliness of the data and reduced duration of the planning cycle to more informed and agile decision making, on both the citizens and the city planners end. The integration of big data into the planning process, at this stage, does not have uniform impact across all levels of decision making and planning process, therefore it should be performed gradually and with full awareness of existing limitations

    Towards the Internet of Smart Trains: A Review on Industrial IoT-Connected Railways

    [Abstract] Nowadays, the railway industry is in a position where it is able to exploit the opportunities created by the IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) and enabling communication technologies under the paradigm of Internet of Trains. This review details the evolution of communication technologies since the deployment of GSM-R, describing the main alternatives and how railway requirements, specifications and recommendations have evolved over time. The advantages of the latest generation of broadband communication systems (e.g., LTE, 5G, IEEE 802.11ad) and the emergence of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for the railway environment are also explained together with the strategic roadmap to ensure a smooth migration from GSM-R. Furthermore, this survey focuses on providing a holistic approach, identifying scenarios and architectures where railways could leverage better commercial IIoT capabilities. After reviewing the main industrial developments, short and medium-term IIoT-enabled services for smart railways are evaluated. Then, it is analyzed the latest research on predictive maintenance, smart infrastructure, advanced monitoring of assets, video surveillance systems, railway operations, Passenger and Freight Information Systems (PIS/FIS), train control systems, safety assurance, signaling systems, cyber security and energy efficiency. Overall, it can be stated that the aim of this article is to provide a detailed examination of the state-of-the-art of different technologies and services that will revolutionize the railway industry and will allow for confronting today challenges.Galicia.     A distributed architecture for unmanned aerial systems based on publish/subscribe messaging and simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM) testbed

School of Computational and Applied Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, November 2017The increased capabilities and lower cost of Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) unveil big opportunities for a rapidly growing number of civilian and commercial applications. Some missions require direct control using a receiver in a point-to-point connection, involving one or very few MAVs. An alternative class of mission is remotely controlled, with the control of the drone automated to a certain extent using mission planning software and autopilot systems. For most emerging missions, there is a need for more autonomous, cooperative control of MAVs, as well as more complex data processing from sensors like cameras and laser scanners. In the last decade, this has given rise to an extensive research from both academia and industry. This research direction applies robotics and computer vision concepts to Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). However, UASs are often designed for specific hardware and software, thus providing limited integration, interoperability and re-usability across different missions. In addition, there are numerous open issues related to UAS command, control and communication(C3), and multi-MAVs. We argue and elaborate throughout this dissertation that some of the recent standardbased publish/subscribe communication protocols can solve many of these challenges and meet the non-functional requirements of MAV robotics applications. This dissertation assesses the MQTT, DDS and TCPROS protocols in a distributed architecture of a UAS control system and Ground Control Station software. While TCPROS has been the leading robotics communication transport for ROS applications, MQTT and DDS are lightweight enough to be used for data exchange between distributed systems of aerial robots. Furthermore, MQTT and DDS are based on industry standards to foster communication interoperability of “things”. Both protocols have been extensively presented to address many of today’s needs related to networks based on the internet of things (IoT). For example, MQTT has been used to exchange data with space probes, whereas DDS was employed for aerospace defence and applications of smart cities. We designed and implemented a distributed UAS architecture based on each publish/subscribe protocol TCPROS, MQTT and DDS. The proposed communication systems were tested with a vision-based Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) system involving three Parrot AR Drone2 MAVs. Within the context of this study, MQTT and DDS messaging frameworks serve the purpose of abstracting UAS complexity and heterogeneity. Additionally, these protocols are expected to provide low-latency communication and scale up to meet the requirements of real-time remote sensing applications. The most important contribution of this work is the implementation of a complete distributed communication architecture for multi-MAVs. Furthermore, we assess the viability of this architecture and benchmark the performance of the protocols in relation to an autonomous quadcopter navigation testbed composed of a SLAM algorithm, an extended Kalman filter and a PID controller.XL201

    Internet of things-based framework for public transportation fleet management in the Free State

    Thesis (Masters: Information Technology) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2019The poor service delivery by the Free State public transportation system inspired us to design a framework solution to improve the current system. This qualitative study focuses on improving the management of the public transportation fleet. One of the most recently developed technologies in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), namely the Internet of Things (IoT), was utilised to develop this framework. Existing problems were identified through research observations, analyses of the current system, analyses of the current problem areas, as well as participants’ questionnaire answers and recommendations, the participants being the passengers, drivers and vehicle owners. The framework was developed in two phases, namely a hardware phase that makes use of ICT sensors (e.g. RFID, GPS, GPRS, IR, Zigbee, WiFi), and a software phase that uses an internet connection to communicate with the different ICT devices. The software utilised a Graphic User Interface (GUI) to ensure that the software is user-friendly and addresses possible problems and barriers such as multiple language interfaces and different ICT skills levels. The newly designed framework offers different services and solutions to meet the participants’ needs, such as real-time tracking for public transport vehicles to help passengers manage their departure and arrival times, as well as for vehicle owners to monitor their own vehicles. In turn, vehicle arrival notifications will encourage passengers to be on time so that vehicles will not be delayed unnecessarily. Another feature is counting devices that can be installed inside the vehicles, which will inform vehicle owners how many passengers are being transported by a vehicle. The passenger pre-booking system will support the drivers when planning their trips/routes. Finally, the framework was designed to fulfil all the participants’ needs that were indicated in the questionnaires in order to achieve the goal of the research study

    Radio over fiber enabling PON fronthaul in a two-tiered cloud

    Avec l’avènement des objets connectés, la bande passante nécessaire dépasse la capacité des interconnections électriques et interface sans fils dans les réseaux d’accès mais aussi dans les réseaux coeurs. Des systèmes photoniques haute capacité situés dans les réseaux d’accès utilisant la technologie radio sur fibre systèmes ont été proposés comme solution dans les réseaux sans fil de 5e générations. Afin de maximiser l’utilisation des ressources des serveurs et des ressources réseau, le cloud computing et des services de stockage sont en cours de déploiement. De cette manière, les ressources centralisées pourraient être diffusées de façon dynamique comme l’utilisateur final le souhaite. Chaque échange nécessitant une synchronisation entre le serveur et son infrastructure, une couche physique optique permet au cloud de supporter la virtualisation des réseaux et de les définir de façon logicielle. Les amplificateurs à semi-conducteurs réflectifs (RSOA) sont une technologie clé au niveau des ONU(unité de communications optiques) dans les réseaux d’accès passif (PON) à fibres. Nous examinons ici la possibilité d’utiliser un RSOA et la technologie radio sur fibre pour transporter des signaux sans fil ainsi qu’un signal numérique sur un PON. La radio sur fibres peut être facilement réalisée grâce à l’insensibilité a la longueur d’onde du RSOA. Le choix de la longueur d’onde pour la couche physique est cependant choisi dans les couches 2/3 du modèle OSI. Les interactions entre la couche physique et la commutation de réseaux peuvent être faites par l’ajout d’un contrôleur SDN pour inclure des gestionnaires de couches optiques. La virtualisation réseau pourrait ainsi bénéficier d’une couche optique flexible grâce des ressources réseau dynamique et adaptée. Dans ce mémoire, nous étudions un système disposant d’une couche physique optique basé sur un RSOA. Celle-ci nous permet de façon simultanée un envoi de signaux sans fil et le transport de signaux numérique au format modulation tout ou rien (OOK) dans un système WDM(multiplexage en longueur d’onde)-PON. Le RSOA a été caractérisé pour montrer sa capacité à gérer une plage dynamique élevée du signal sans fil analogique. Ensuite, les signaux RF et IF du système de fibres sont comparés avec ses avantages et ses inconvénients. Finalement, nous réalisons de façon expérimentale une liaison point à point WDM utilisant la transmission en duplex intégral d’un signal wifi analogique ainsi qu’un signal descendant au format OOK. En introduisant deux mélangeurs RF dans la liaison montante, nous avons résolu le problème d’incompatibilité avec le système sans fil basé sur le TDD (multiplexage en temps duplexé).With the advent of IoT (internet of things) bandwidth requirements triggered by aggregated wireless connections have exceeded the fundamental limitation of copper and microwave based wireless backhaul and fronthaul networks. High capacity photonic fronthaul systems employing radio over fiber technology has been proposed as the ultimate solution for 5G wireless system. To maximize utilization of server and network resources, cloud computing and storage based services are being deployed. In this manner, centralized resources could be dynamically streamed to the end user as requested. Since on demand resource provision requires the orchestration between the server and network infrastructure, a smart photonic (physical layer)PHY enabled cloud is foreseen to support network virtualization and software defined network. RSOAs (Reflective Semiconductor Optical Amplifier) are being investigated as key enablers of the colorless ONU(Optical Network Unit) solution in PON (Passive Optical Network). We examine the use of an RSOA in radio over fiber systems to transport wireless signals over a PON simultaneously with digital data. Radio over fiber systems with flexible wavelength allocation could be achieved thanks to the colorless operation of the RSOA and wavelength reuse technique. The wavelength flexibility in optical PHY are inline with the paradigm of software defined network (SDN) in OSI layer 2/3. The orchestration between optical PHY and network switching fabric could be realized by extending the SDN controller to include optical layer handlers. Network virtualization could also benefit from the flexible optical PHY through dynamic and tailored optical network resource provision. In this thesis, we investigate an optical PHY system based on RSOA enabling both analog wireless signal and digital On-Off Keying (OOK) transportation within WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) PON architecture. The RSOA has been characterized to show its potential ability to handle high dynamic range analog wireless signal. Then the RF and IF radio over fiber scheme is compared with its pros and cons. Finally we perform the experiment to shown a point to point WDM link with full duplex transmission of analog WiFi signal with downlink OOK signal. By introducing two RF mixer in the uplink, we have solved the incompatible problem with TDD (Time Division Duplex) based wireless system

    Rethinking business models for innovation

    One of the major challenges confronted by those in charge of technological innovation involves anticipating the value creation model sufficiently early on,in a highly uncertain context both as far as the technology itself is concerned and the potential market. Today, in many industrial sectors, the innovation boundaries have moved towards projects that are more and more exploratory and fuzzy. The simple optimisation of linear processes of the "stage-gate" type is no longer sufficient to build sustainable competitive advantages. The notion of Business Models, when applied to innovation, enables us to describe how a company creates value through innovation, generally within a business ecosystem, and how the value will be distributed between the actors involved. The authors of this book believe that the notions of Business Modelling and value creation are key to all the dimensions of successful innovation, whether technology, marketing, organisational or economically based. Rethinking Business Models for Innovation: this title describes the relationship between thinking, modelling, and also field-testing. The book is based on a series of nine recent cases of innovation involving company managers, often assisted by researchers (the co-authors of each chapter), and how they built and formalised their Business Models and then tested their strategies. After having discovered the variety of the cases, the reader will understand that every innovation situation generates specific questions about Business Models. However, we feel that we can identify three key issues that arise, more or less, in each of these projects.     INVESTIGATING ICT SOLUTIONS FOR THE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT IN THE FREE STATE: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

    ThesisInefficiencies in the public transportation system in the Free State province resulting in poor quality public transportation has led to the investigation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions to improve the system, through integration, and the challenges and opportunities that may result from this integration. This research investigates ICT solutions for public transportation improvement focusing on the challenges and opportunities for all stakeholders of the public transportation system. Critical review of South African legislation and policies on public transportation and ICT was carried out. This was to review government laws and policies governing public transportation development. It also reviewed how the government planned on improving public transportation, developments so far based on those plans and future plans, and how these legislations by the government have been carried out in the Free State province. A theoretical framework was developed to lay out expectations for the integration process including the adoption of technologies and adaptations to the new integrated public transportation system based on technology acceptance and diffusion theories. Questionnaire and Interview surveys were carried out on public transportation vehicle owners, drivers, public transportation users and non-users to assess the current state of public transportation, their needs that could potentially be solved by ICT and the challenges likely to be faced. The use of questionnaires was also to assist in identifying and defining elements needed for successful integration of ICT into the system. ICT experts, transportation planners, academics, public transportation owners and users were also interviewed to gain more understanding and insight on ICT solutions, the public transportation systems, technologies for potential use in the public transportation system and challenges that may arise due to integration
