    Compact Drawings of 1-Planar Graphs with Right-Angle Crossings and Few Bends

    We study the following classes of beyond-planar graphs: 1-planar, IC-planar, and NIC-planar graphs. These are the graphs that admit a 1-planar, IC-planar, and NIC-planar drawing, respectively. A drawing of a graph is 1-planar if every edge is crossed at most once. A 1-planar drawing is IC-planar if no two pairs of crossing edges share a vertex. A 1-planar drawing is NIC-planar if no two pairs of crossing edges share two vertices. We study the relations of these beyond-planar graph classes (beyond-planar graphs is a collective term for the primary attempts to generalize the planar graphs) to right-angle crossing (RAC) graphs that admit compact drawings on the grid with few bends. We present four drawing algorithms that preserve the given embeddings. First, we show that every nn-vertex NIC-planar graph admits a NIC-planar RAC drawing with at most one bend per edge on a grid of size O(n)×O(n)O(n) \times O(n). Then, we show that every nn-vertex 1-planar graph admits a 1-planar RAC drawing with at most two bends per edge on a grid of size O(n3)×O(n3)O(n^3) \times O(n^3). Finally, we make two known algorithms embedding-preserving; for drawing 1-planar RAC graphs with at most one bend per edge and for drawing IC-planar RAC graphs straight-line

    No finite 55-regular matchstick graph exists

    A graph G=(V,E)G=(V,E) is called a unit-distance graph in the plane if there is an injective embedding of VV in the plane such that every pair of adjacent vertices are at unit distance apart. If additionally the corresponding edges are non-crossing and all vertices have the same degree rr we talk of a regular matchstick graph. Due to Euler's polyhedron formula we have r≤5r\le 5. The smallest known 44-regular matchstick graph is the so called Harborth graph consisting of 5252 vertices.     Unimodular lattice triangulations as small-world and scale-free random graphs

    Real-world networks, e.g. the social relations or world-wide-web graphs, exhibit both small-world and scale-free behaviour. We interpret lattice triangulations as planar graphs by identifying triangulation vertices with graph nodes and one-dimensional simplices with edges. Since these triangulations are ergodic with respect to a certain Pachner flip, applying different Monte-Carlo simulations enables us to calculate average properties of random triangulations, as well as canonical ensemble averages using an energy functional that is approximately the variance of the degree distribution. All considered triangulations have clustering coefficients comparable with real world graphs, for the canonical ensemble there are inverse temperatures with small shortest path length independent of system size. Tuning the inverse temperature to a quasi-critical value leads to an indication of scale-free behaviour for degrees k≥5k \geq 5. Using triangulations as a random graph model can improve the understanding of real-world networks, especially if the actual distance of the embedded nodes becomes important.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, will appear in New J.     Non-crossing frameworks with non-crossing reciprocals

    We study non-crossing frameworks in the plane for which the classical reciprocal on the dual graph is also non-crossing. We give a complete description of the self-stresses on non-crossing frameworks whose reciprocals are non-crossing, in terms of: the types of faces (only pseudo-triangles and pseudo-quadrangles are allowed); the sign patterns in the self-stress; and a geometric condition on the stress vectors at some of the vertices. As in other recent papers where the interplay of non-crossingness and rigidity of straight-line plane graphs is studied, pseudo-triangulations show up as objects of special interest. For example, it is known that all planar Laman circuits can be embedded as a pseudo-triangulation with one non-pointed vertex. We show that if such an embedding is sufficiently generic, then the reciprocal is non-crossing and again a pseudo-triangulation embedding of a planar Laman circuit. For a singular (i.e., non-generic) pseudo-triangulation embedding of a planar Laman circuit, the reciprocal is still non-crossing and a pseudo-triangulation, but its underlying graph may not be a Laman circuit. Moreover, all the pseudo-triangulations which admit a non-crossing reciprocal arise as the reciprocals of such, possibly singular, stresses on pseudo-triangulation embeddings of Laman circuits. All self-stresses on a planar graph correspond to liftings to piece-wise linear surfaces in 3-space.     On the Obfuscation Complexity of Planar Graphs

    Being motivated by John Tantalo's Planarity Game, we consider straight line plane drawings of a planar graph GG with edge crossings and wonder how obfuscated such drawings can be. We define obf(G)obf(G), the obfuscation complexity of GG, to be the maximum number of edge crossings in a drawing of GG. Relating obf(G)obf(G) to the distribution of vertex degrees in GG, we show an efficient way of constructing a drawing of GG with at least obf(G)/3obf(G)/3 edge crossings. We prove bounds (\delta(G)^2/24-o(1))n^2 < \obf G <3 n^2 for an nn-vertex planar graph GG with minimum vertex degree δ(G)≥2\delta(G)\ge 2. The shift complexity of GG, denoted by shift(G)shift(G), is the minimum number of vertex shifts sufficient to eliminate all edge crossings in an arbitrarily obfuscated drawing of GG (after shifting a vertex, all incident edges are supposed to be redrawn correspondingly). If δ(G)≥3\delta(G)\ge 3, then shift(G)shift(G) is linear in the number of vertices due to the known fact that the matching number of GG is linear. However, in the case δ(G)≥2\delta(G)\ge2 we notice that shift(G)shift(G) can be linear even if the matching number is bounded.     Percolation on uniform infinite planar maps

    We construct the uniform infinite planar map (UIPM), obtained as the n \to \infty local limit of planar maps with n edges, chosen uniformly at random. We then describe how the UIPM can be sampled using a "peeling" process, in a similar way as for uniform triangulations. This process allows us to prove that for bond and site percolation on the UIPM, the percolation thresholds are p_c^bond=1/2 and p_c^site=2/3 respectively. This method also works for other classes of random infinite planar maps, and we show in particular that for bond percolation on the uniform infinite planar quadrangulation, the percolation threshold is p_c^bond=1/3.Comment: 26 pages, 9 figure

    The polytope of non-crossing graphs on a planar point set

    For any finite set \A of nn points in R2\R^2, we define a (3n−3)(3n-3)-dimensional simple polyhedron whose face poset is isomorphic to the poset of ``non-crossing marked graphs'' with vertex set \A, where a marked graph is defined as a geometric graph together with a subset of its vertices. The poset of non-crossing graphs on \A appears as the complement of the star of a face in that polyhedron. The polyhedron has a unique maximal bounded face, of dimension 2ni+n−32n_i +n -3 where nin_i is the number of points of \A in the interior of \conv(\A). The vertices of this polytope are all the pseudo-triangulations of \A, and the edges are flips of two types: the traditional diagonal flips (in pseudo-triangulations) and the removal or insertion of a single edge.
