    Online impedance regulation techniques for compliant humanoid balancing

    This paper presents three distinct techniques, aimed at the online active impedance regulation of compliant humanoid robots, which endeavours to induce a state of balance to the system once it has been perturbed. The presence of passive elastic elements in the drives powering this class of robots leads to under-actuation, thereby rendering the control of compliant robots an intricate task. Consequently, the impedance regulation procedures proposed in this paper directly account for these elastic elements. In order to acquire an indication of the robot’s state of balance in an online fashion, an energy (Lyapunov) function is introduced, whose sign then allows one to ascertain whether the robot is converging to or diverging from, a desired equilibrium position. Computing this function’s time derivative unequivocally gives the energy-injecting nature of the active stiffness regulation, and reveals that active damping regulation has no bearing on the system’s state of stability. Furthermore, the velocity margin notion is interpreted as a velocity value beyond which the system’s balance might be jeopardized, or below which the robot will be guaranteed to remain stable. As a result, the unidirectional and bidirectional impedance optimization methods rely upon the use of bounds that have been defined based on the energy function’s derivative, in addition to the velocity margin. Contrarily, the third technique’s functionality revolves solely around the use of Lyapunov Stability Margins (LSMs). A series of experiments carried out using the COmpliant huMANoid (COMAN), demonstrates the superior balancing results acquired when using the bidirectional scheme, as compared to utilizing the two alternative techniques

    Instantaneous Momentum-Based Control of Floating Base Systems

    In the last two decades a growing number of robotic applications such as autonomous drones, wheeled robots and industrial manipulators started to be employed in several human environments. However, these machines often possess limited locomotion and/or manipulation capabilities, thus reducing the number of achievable tasks and increasing the complexity of robot-environment interaction. Augmenting robots locomotion and manipulation abilities is a fundamental research topic, with a view to enhance robots participation in complex tasks involving safe interaction and cooperation with humans. To this purpose, humanoid robots, aerial manipulators and the novel design of flying humanoid robots are among the most promising platforms researchers are studying in the attempt to remove the existing technological barriers. These robots are often modeled as floating base systems, and have lost the assumption -- typical of fixed base robots -- of having one link always attached to the ground. From the robot control side, contact forces regulation revealed to be fundamental for the execution of interaction tasks. Contact forces can be influenced by directly controlling the robot's momentum rate of change, and this fact gives rise to several momentum-based control strategies. Nevertheless, effective design of force and torque controllers still remains a complex challenge. The variability of sensor load during interaction, the inaccuracy of the force/torque sensing technology and the inherent nonlinearities of robot models are only a few complexities impairing efficient robot force control. This research project focuses on the design of balancing and flight controllers for floating base robots interacting with the surrounding environment. More specifically, the research is built upon the state-of-the-art of momentum-based controllers and applied to three robotic platforms: the humanoid robot iCub, the aerial manipulator OTHex and the jet-powered humanoid robot iRonCub. The project enforces the existing literature with both theoretical and experimental results, aimed at achieving high robot performances and improved stability and robustness, in presence of different physical robot-environment interactions

    Enabling Human-Robot Collaboration via Holistic Human Perception and Partner-Aware Control

    As robotic technology advances, the barriers to the coexistence of humans and robots are slowly coming down. Application domains like elderly care, collaborative manufacturing, collaborative manipulation, etc., are considered the need of the hour, and progress in robotics holds the potential to address many societal challenges. The future socio-technical systems constitute of blended workforce with a symbiotic relationship between human and robot partners working collaboratively. This thesis attempts to address some of the research challenges in enabling human-robot collaboration. In particular, the challenge of a holistic perception of a human partner to continuously communicate his intentions and needs in real-time to a robot partner is crucial for the successful realization of a collaborative task. Towards that end, we present a holistic human perception framework for real-time monitoring of whole-body human motion and dynamics. On the other hand, the challenge of leveraging assistance from a human partner will lead to improved human-robot collaboration. In this direction, we attempt at methodically defining what constitutes assistance from a human partner and propose partner-aware robot control strategies to endow robots with the capacity to meaningfully engage in a collaborative task

    Robust online motion planning with reachable sets

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2013.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 51-55).In this thesis we consider the problem of generating motion plans for a nonlinear dynamical system that are guaranteed to succeed despite uncertainty in the environment, parametric model uncertainty, disturbances, and/or errors in state estimation. Furthermore, we consider the case where these plans must be generated online, because constraints such as obstacles in the environment may not be known until they are perceived (with a noisy sensor) at runtime. Previous work on feedback motion planning for nonlinear systems was limited to offline planning due to the computational cost of safety verification. Here we augment the traditional trajectory library approach by designing locally stabilizing controllers for each nominal trajectory in the library and providing guarantees on the resulting closed loop systems. We leverage sums-of-squares programming to design these locally stabilizing controllers by explicitly attempting to minimize the size of the worst case reachable set of the closed-loop system subjected to bounded disturbances and uncertainty. The reachable sets associated with each trajectory in the library can be thought of as "funnels" that the system is guaranteed to remain within. The resulting funnel library is then used to sequentially compose motion plans at runtime while ensuring the safety of the robot. A major advantage of the work presented here is that by explicitly taking into account the effect of uncertainty, the robot can evaluate motion plans based on how vulnerable they are to disturbances. We demonstrate our method on a simulation of a plane flying through a two dimensional forest of polygonal trees with parametric uncertainty and disturbances in the form of a bounded "cross-wind". We further validate our approach by carefully evaluating the guarantees on invariance provided by funnels on two challenging underactuated systems (the "Acrobot" and a small-sized airplane).by Anirudha Majumdar.S.M

    Benchmarking Stability of Bipedal Locomotion Based on Individual Full Body Dynamics and Foot Placement Strategies–Application to Impaired and Unimpaired Walking

    The principles underlying smooth and effortless human walking while maintaining stability as well as the ability to quickly respond to unexpected perturbations result from a plethora of well-balanced parameters, most of them yet to be determined. In this paper, we investigate criteria that may be useful for benchmarking stability properties of human walking. We perform dynamic reconstructions of human walking motions of unimpaired subjects and subjects walking with transfemoral prostheses from motion capture recordings using optimal control. We aim at revealing subject-specific strategies in applying dynamics in order to maintain steady gait considering irregularities such as deviating gait patterns or asymmetric body segment properties. We identify foot placement with respect to the Instantaneous Capture Point as the strategy globally applied by the subjects to obtain steady gait and propose the Residual Orbital Energy as a measure allowing for benchmarking human-like gait toward confident vs. cautious gait

    Adaptive Force-Based Control of Dynamic Legged Locomotion over Uneven Terrain

    Agile-legged robots have proven to be highly effective in navigating and performing tasks in complex and challenging environments, including disaster zones and industrial settings. However, these applications normally require the capability of carrying heavy loads while maintaining dynamic motion. Therefore, this paper presents a novel methodology for incorporating adaptive control into a force-based control system. Recent advancements in the control of quadruped robots show that force control can effectively realize dynamic locomotion over rough terrain. By integrating adaptive control into the force-based controller, our proposed approach can maintain the advantages of the baseline framework while adapting to significant model uncertainties and unknown terrain impact models. Experimental validation was successfully conducted on the Unitree A1 robot. With our approach, the robot can carry heavy loads (up to 50% of its weight) while performing dynamic gaits such as fast trotting and bounding across uneven terrains

    Integration of Riemannian Motion Policy and Whole-Body Control for Dynamic Legged Locomotion

    In this paper, we present a novel Riemannian Motion Policy (RMP)flow-based whole-body control framework for improved dynamic legged locomotion. RMPflow is a differential geometry-inspired algorithm for fusing multiple task-space policies (RMPs) into a configuration space policy in a geometrically consistent manner. RMP-based approaches are especially suited for designing simultaneous tracking and collision avoidance behaviors and have been successfully deployed on serial manipulators. However, one caveat of RMPflow is that it is designed with fully actuated systems in mind. In this work, we, for the first time, extend it to the domain of dynamic-legged systems, which have unforgiving under-actuation and limited control input. Thorough push recovery experiments are conducted in simulation to validate the overall framework. We show that expanding the valid stepping region with an RMP-based collision-avoidance swing leg controller improves balance robustness against external disturbances by up to 53%53\% compared to a baseline approach using a restricted stepping region. Furthermore, a point-foot biped robot is purpose-built for experimental studies of dynamic biped locomotion. A preliminary unassisted in-place stepping experiment is conducted to show the viability of the control framework and hardware
