    Genetic Programming for Smart Phone Personalisation

    Personalisation in smart phones requires adaptability to dynamic context based on user mobility, application usage and sensor inputs. Current personalisation approaches, which rely on static logic that is developed a priori, do not provide sufficient adaptability to dynamic and unexpected context. This paper proposes genetic programming (GP), which can evolve program logic in realtime, as an online learning method to deal with the highly dynamic context in smart phone personalisation. We introduce the concept of collaborative smart phone personalisation through the GP Island Model, in order to exploit shared context among co-located phone users and reduce convergence time. We implement these concepts on real smartphones to demonstrate the capability of personalisation through GP and to explore the benefits of the Island Model. Our empirical evaluations on two example applications confirm that the Island Model can reduce convergence time by up to two-thirds over standalone GP personalisation.Comment: 43 pages, 11 figure

    The demand for mobile connectivity is continuously increasing, and by 2020 Mobile and Wireless Communications will serve not only very dense populations of mobile phones and nomadic computers, but also the expected multiplicity of devices and sensors located in machines, vehicles, health systems and city infrastructures. Future Mobile Networks are then faced with many new scenarios and use cases, which will load the networks with different data traffic patterns, in new or shared spectrum bands, creating new specific requirements. This book addresses both the techniques to model, analyse and optimise the radio links and transmission systems in such scenarios, together with the most advanced radio access, resource management and mobile networking technologies. This text summarises the work performed by more than 500 researchers from more than 120 institutions in Europe, America and Asia, from both academia and industries, within the framework of the COST IC1004 Action on "Cooperative Radio Communications for Green and Smart Environments". The book will have appeal to graduates and researchers in the Radio Communications area, and also to engineers working in the Wireless industry.     SaPPART White paper. Better use of Global Navigation Satellite Systems for safer and greener transport

    Transport and mobility services are crucial to the society that faces important challenges. Up to date, transport facilities and services have been fundamental to economic growth. However, there have significant and unacceptable negative impacts on the environment including pollution, noise and climate change. Therefore, it is paramount that the efficiency of the transport system is improved significantly including lower consumption of energy. A way of achieving this is through the concept of smart transport that exploits Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) technology. ITS are built on three technology pillars: information, communication and positioning technologies. Of the three technologies, positioning could be argued to be the least familiar amongst transport stakeholders. However, a quick investigation reveals that there are a wide variety of transport and related services often associated with communication technologies that are supported by positioning. Currently, the positioning is provided in the majority of the cases by Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), among which the Global Positioning System (GPS) is the pioneer and still the most widely used system. The other current fully operational stand-alone system is Russia’s GLONASS. As these operational systems were not originally and specifically designed for transport applications, the actual capabilities and limitations of the current GNSS are not fully understood by many stakeholders. Therefore, better knowledge of these limitations and their resolution should enable a much more rapid deployment of ITS. This white paper is produced by the members of the COST Action SaPPART with two principal aims. The first is to explain the principles, state-of-the-art performance of GNSS technology and added value in the field of transport. The second aim is to deliver key messages to the stakeholders to facilitate the deployment of GNSS technology and thus contribute to the development of smarter and greener transport systems. The first chapter highlights the important role of positioning in today transport systems and the added value of accurate and reliable positioning for critical systems. The second chapter is about positioning technologies for transport: GNSS and their different aiding and augmentation methods are described, but the other complementary technologies are also introduced. The third and last chapter is about the management of performances inside a positioning-based intelligent transport system, between the positioning system itself and the application-specific part of the system which processes the raw position for delivering its service

    Distributed localization of a RF target in NLOS environments

    We propose a novel distributed expectation maximization (EM) method for non-cooperative RF device localization using a wireless sensor network. We consider the scenario where few or no sensors receive line-of-sight signals from the target. In the case of non-line-of-sight signals, the signal path consists of a single reflection between the transmitter and receiver. Each sensor is able to measure the time difference of arrival of the target's signal with respect to a reference sensor, as well as the angle of arrival of the target's signal. We derive a distributed EM algorithm where each node makes use of its local information to compute summary statistics, and then shares these statistics with its neighbors to improve its estimate of the target localization. Since all the measurements need not be centralized at a single location, the spectrum usage can be significantly reduced. The distributed algorithm also allows for increased robustness of the sensor network in the case of node failures. We show that our distributed algorithm converges, and simulation results suggest that our method achieves an accuracy close to the centralized EM algorithm. We apply the distributed EM algorithm to a set of experimental measurements with a network of four nodes, which confirm that the algorithm is able to localize a RF target in a realistic non-line-of-sight scenario.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figure

    Active Object Classification from 3D Range Data with Mobile Robots

    This thesis addresses the problem of how to improve the acquisition of 3D range data with a mobile robot for the task of object classification. Establishing the identities of objects in unknown environments is fundamental for robotic systems and helps enable many abilities such as grasping, manipulation, or semantic mapping. Objects are recognised by data obtained from sensor observations, however, data is highly dependent on viewpoint; the variation in position and orientation of the sensor relative to an object can result in large variation in the perception quality. Additionally, cluttered environments present a further challenge because key data may be missing. These issues are not always solved by traditional passive systems where data are collected from a fixed navigation process then fed into a perception pipeline. This thesis considers an active approach to data collection by deciding where is most appropriate to make observations for the perception task. The core contributions of this thesis are a non-myopic planning strategy to collect data efficiently under resource constraints, and supporting viewpoint prediction and evaluation methods for object classification. Our approach to planning uses Monte Carlo methods coupled with a classifier based on non-parametric Bayesian regression. We present a novel anytime and non-myopic planning algorithm, Monte Carlo active perception, that extends Monte Carlo tree search to partially observable environments and the active perception problem. This is combined with a particle-based estimation process and a learned observation likelihood model that uses Gaussian process regression. To support planning, we present 3D point cloud prediction algorithms and utility functions that measure the quality of viewpoints by their discriminatory ability and effectiveness under occlusion. The utility of viewpoints is quantified by information-theoretic metrics, such as mutual information, and an alternative utility function that exploits learned data is developed for special cases. The algorithms in this thesis are demonstrated in a variety of scenarios. We extensively test our online planning and classification methods in simulation as well as with indoor and outdoor datasets. Furthermore, we perform hardware experiments with different mobile platforms equipped with different types of sensors. Most significantly, our hardware experiments with an outdoor robot are to our knowledge the first demonstrations of online active perception in a real outdoor environment. Active perception has broad significance in many applications. This thesis emphasises the advantages of an active approach to object classification and presents its assimilation with a wide range of robotic systems, sensors, and perception algorithms. By demonstration of performance enhancements and diversity, our hope is that the concept of considering perception and planning in an integrated manner will be of benefit in improving current systems that rely on passive data collection
