    Performance Analysis of Iterative Channel Estimation and Multiuser Detection in Multipath DS-CDMA Channels

    This paper examines the performance of decision feedback based iterative channel estimation and multiuser detection in channel coded aperiodic DS-CDMA systems operating over multipath fading channels. First, explicit expressions describing the performance of channel estimation and parallel interference cancellation based multiuser detection are developed. These results are then combined to characterize the evolution of the performance of a system that iterates among channel estimation, multiuser detection and channel decoding.     Survey propagation for the cascading Sourlas code

    We investigate how insights from statistical physics, namely survey propagation, can improve decoding of a particular class of sparse error correcting codes. We show that a recently proposed algorithm, time averaged belief propagation, is in fact intimately linked to a specific survey propagation for which Parisi's replica symmetry breaking parameter is set to zero, and that the latter is always superior to belief propagation in the high connectivity limit. We briefly look at further improvements available by going to the second level of replica symmetry breaking.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figure

    AbstractIn a wireless broadband context, multi-path dispersive channels can severely affectdata communication of Mobile Terminals (MTs) uplink.Single Carrier withFrequency-Domain Equalization (SC-FDE) has been proposed to deal with highlydispersive channels for the uplink of broadband wireless systems. However, currentsystems rely on older assumptions of the Nyquist theorem and assume that a systemneeds a minimum bandwidth 2Wper MT. Faster-Than-Nyquist (FTN) assumesthat it is possible to employ a bandwidth as low as 0.802 of the original Nyquistbandwidth with minimum loss - despite this, the current literature has only proposedcomplex receivers for a simple characterization of the wireless channel. Furthermore,the uplink of SC-FDE can be severely affected by a deep-fade and or poor channelconditions; to cope with such difficulties Diversity Combining (DC) Hybrid ARQ(H-ARQ) is a viable technique, since it combines the several packet copies sent bya MT to create reliable packet symbols at the receiver.In this thesis we consider the use of FTN signaling for the uplink of broadbandwireless systems employing SC-FDE based on the Iterative Block with DecisionFeedback Equalization (IB-DFE) receiver with a simple scheduled access HybridAutomatic Repeat reQuest (H-ARQ) specially designed taking into account thecharacteristics of FTN signals. This approach achieves a better performance thanNyquist signaling by taking advantage of the additional bandwidth employed of aroot-raised cosine pulse for additional diversity.Alongside a Packet Error Rate (PER) analytical model, simulation results show that this receiver presents a better performance when compared with a regular system,with higher system throughputs and a lower Energy per Useful Packet (EPUP)

    Turbo Decoding and Detection for Wireless Applications

    A historical perspective of turbo coding and turbo transceivers inspired by the generic turbo principles is provided, as it evolved from Shannon’s visionary predictions. More specifically, we commence by discussing the turbo principles, which have been shown to be capable of performing close to Shannon’s capacity limit. We continue by reviewing the classic maximum a posteriori probability decoder. These discussions are followed by studying the effect of a range of system parameters in a systematic fashion, in order to gauge their performance ramifications. In the second part of this treatise, we focus our attention on the family of iterative receivers designed for wireless communication systems, which were partly inspired by the invention of turbo codes. More specifically, the family of iteratively detected joint coding and modulation schemes, turbo equalization, concatenated spacetime and channel coding arrangements, as well as multi-user detection and three-stage multimedia systems are highlighted

    Numerical study on failure process of aluminium plate subjected to normal impact by hemispherical projectiles

    In this paper a study is presented on the numerical analysis of the failure process of aluminium armour plate subjected to normal impact by hemispherical projectiles. The perforation process has been simulated by the application of 3D analysis using IMPACT dynamic FE program suite. The comparison on the elements size of meshing towards failure mode was observed and evaluated. The material behaviour of the target plate was approximated by an appropriate constitutive relation. The study covered different size of meshing element on target plate as well as different level of impact velocities. Different failure modes for each case were found. For low speed impact condition a petalling was observed, whereas for high speed impact a radial neck along with a holes enlargement was observed with better and uniform perforation mode. The deformation and failure mode of the impacted target plate will be given special attention in this investigation
