    On the vehicle sideslip angle estimation: a literature review of methods, models and innovations

    Typical active safety systems controlling the dynamics of passenger cars rely on real-time monitoring of the vehicle sideslip angle (VSA), together with other signals like wheel angular velocities, steering angle, lateral acceleration, and the rate of rotation about the vertical axis, known as the yaw rate. The VSA (aka attitude or “drifting” angle) is defined as the angle between the vehicle longitudinal axis and the direction of travel, taking the centre of gravity as a reference. It is basically a measure of the misalignment between vehicle orientation and trajectory therefore it is a vital piece of information enabling directional stability assessment, in transients following emergency manoeuvres for instance. As explained in the introduction the VSA is not measured directly for impracticality and it is estimated on the basis of available measurements like wheel velocities, linear and angular accelerations etc. This work is intended to provide a comprehensive literature review on the VSA estimation problem. Two main estimation methods have been categorised, i.e. Observer-based and Neural Network-based, focusing on the most effective and innovative approaches. As the first method normally relies on a vehicle model, a review of the vehicle models has been included. Advantages and limitations of each technique have been highlighted and discussed

    Uses and Challenges of Collecting LiDAR Data from a Growing Autonomous Vehicle Fleet: Implications for Infrastructure Planning and Inspection Practices

    Autonomous vehicles (AVs) that utilize LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and other sensing technologies are becoming an inevitable part of transportation industry. Concurrently, transportation agencies are increasingly challenged with the management and tracking of large-scale highway asset inventory. LiDAR has become popular among transportation agencies for highway asset management given its advantage over traditional surveying methods. The affordability of LiDAR technology is increasing day by day. Given this, there will be substantial challenges and opportunities for the utilization of big data resulting from the growth of AVs with LiDAR. A proper understanding of the data size generated from this technology will help agencies in making decisions regarding storage, management, and transmission of the data. The original raw data generated from the sensor shrinks a lot after filtering and processing following the Cache county Road Manual and storing into ASPRS recommended (.las) file format. In this pilot study, it is found that while considering the road centerline as the vehicle trajectory larger portion of the data fall into the right of way section compared to the actual vehicle trajectory in Cache County, UT. And there is a positive relation between the data size and vehicle speed in terms of the travel lanes section given the nature of the selected highway environment

    Optimal slip control for tractors with feedback of drive torque

    Traction efficiency of tractors barely reaches 50 % in field operations. On the other hand, modern trends in agriculture show growth of the global tractor markets and at the same time increased demands for greenhouse gas emission reduction as well as energy efficiency due to increasing fuel costs. Engine power of farm tractors is growing at 1.8 kW per year reaching today about 500 kW for the highest traction class machines. The problem of effective use of energy has become crucial. Existing slip control approaches for tractors do not fulfil this requirement due to fixed reference set-point.     Development and evaluation of low cost 2-d lidar based traffic data collection methods

    Traffic data collection is one of the essential components of a transportation planning exercise. Granular traffic data such as volume count, vehicle classification, speed measurement, and occupancy, allows managing transportation systems more effectively. For effective traffic operation and management, authorities require deploying many sensors across the network. Moreover, the ascending efforts to achieve smart transportation aspects put immense pressure on planning authorities to deploy more sensors to cover an extensive network. This research focuses on the development and evaluation of inexpensive data collection methodology by using two-dimensional (2-D) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology. LiDAR is adopted since it is economical and easily accessible technology. Moreover, its 360-degree visibility and accurate distance information make it more reliable. To collect traffic count data, the proposed method integrates a Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) into a single framework. Proof-of-Concept (POC) test is conducted in three different places in Newark, New Jersey to examine the performance of the proposed method. The POC test results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves acceptable performances, resulting in 83% ~ 94% accuracy. It is discovered that the proposed method\u27s accuracy is affected by the color of the exterior surface of a vehicle since some colored surfaces do not produce enough reflective rays. It is noticed that the blue and black colors are less reflective, while white-colored surfaces produce high reflective rays. A methodology is proposed that comprises K-means clustering, inverse sensor model, and Kalman filter to obtain trajectories of the vehicles at the intersections. The primary purpose of vehicle detection and tracking is to obtain the turning movement counts at an intersection. A K-means clustering is an unsupervised machine learning technique that clusters the data into different groups by analyzing the smallest mean of a data point from the centroid. The ultimate objective of applying K-mean clustering is to identify the difference between pedestrians and vehicles. An inverse sensor model is a state model of occupancy grid mapping that localizes the detected vehicles on the grid map. A constant velocity model based Kalman filter is defined to track the trajectory of the vehicles. The data are collected from two intersections located in Newark, New Jersey, to study the accuracy of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has an average accuracy of 83.75%. Furthermore, the obtained R-squared value for localization of the vehicles on the grid map is ranging between 0.87 to 0.89. Furthermore, a primary cost comparison is made to study the cost efficiency of the developed methodology. The cost comparison shows that the proposed methodology based on 2-D LiDAR technology can achieve acceptable accuracy at a low price and be considered a smart city concept to conduct extensive scale data collection

    Optimized Filter Design for Non-Differential GPS/IMU Integrated Navigation

    The endeavours in improving the performance of a conventional non-differential GPS/MEMS IMU tightly-coupled navigation system through filter design, involving nonlinear filtering methods, inertial sensors' stochastic error modelling and the carrier phase implementation, are described and introduced in this thesis. The main work is summarised as follows. Firstly, the performance evaluation of a recently developed nonlinear filtering method, the Cubature Kalman filter (CKF), is analysed based on the Taylor expansion. The theoretical analysis indicates that the nonlinear filtering method CKF shows its benefits only when implemented in a nonlinear system. Accordingly, a nonlinear attitude expression with direction cosine matrix (DCM) is introduced to tightly-coupled navigation system in order to describe the misalignment between the true and the estimated navigation frames. The simulation and experiment results show that the CKF performs better than the extended Kalman filter (EKF) in the unobservable, large misalignment and GPS outage cases when attitude errors accumulate quickly, rendering the psi-angle expression invalid and subsequently showing certain nonlinearity. Secondly, the use of shaping filter theory to model the inertial sensors' stochastic errors in a navigation Kalman filter is also introduced. The coefficients of the inertial sensors' noises are determined from the Allan variance plot. The shaping filter transfer function is deduced from the power spectral density (PSD) of the noises for both stationary and non-stationary processes. All the coloured noises are modelled together in the navigation Kalman filter according to equivalence theory. The coasting performance shows that the shaping filter based modelling method has a similar and even smaller maximum position drift than the conventional 1st-order Markovian process modelling method during GPS outages, thus indicating its effectiveness. Thirdly, according to the methods of dealing with carrier phase ambiguities, tightly-coupled navigation systems with time differenced carrier phase (TDCP) and total carrier phase (TCP) as Kalman filter measurements are deduced. The simulation and experiment results show that the TDCP can improve the velocity estimation accuracy and smooth trajectories, but position accuracy can only achieve the single point positioning (SPP) level if the TDCP is augmented with the pseudo-range, while the TCP based method's position accuracy can reach the sub-meter level. In order to further improve the position accuracy of the TDCP based method, a particle filter (PF) with modified TDCP observation is implemented in the TDCP/IMU tightly-coupled navigation system. The modified TDCP is defined as the carrier phase difference between the reference and observation epochs. The absolute position accuracy is determined by the reference position accuracy. If the reference position is taken from DGPS, the absolute position accuracy can reach the sub-meter level. For TCP/IMU tightly-coupled navigation systems, because the implementation of TCP in the navigation Kalman filter introduces additional states to the state vector, a hybrid CKF+EKF filtering method with the CKF estimating nonlinear states and the EKF estimating linear states, is proposed to maintain the CKF's benefits while reducing the computational load. The navigation results indicate the effectiveness of the method. After applying the improvements, the performance of a non-differential GPS/MEMS IMU tightly-coupled navigation system can be greatly improved

    A dynamic two-dimensional (D2D) weight-based map-matching algorithm

    Existing map-Matching (MM) algorithms primarily localize positioning fixes along the centerline of a road and have largely ignored road width as an input. Consequently, vehicle lane-level localization, which is essential for stringent Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications, seems difficult to accomplish, especially with the positioning data from low-cost GPS sensors. This paper aims to address this limitation by developing a new dynamic two-dimensional (D2D) weight-based MM algorithm incorporating dynamic weight coefficients and road width. To enable vehicle lane-level localization, a road segment is virtually expressed as a matrix of homogeneous grids with reference to a road centerline. These grids are then used to map-match positioning fixes as opposed to matching on a road centerline as carried out in traditional MM algorithms. In this developed algorithm, vehicle location identification on a road segment is based on the total weight score which is a function of four different weights: (i) proximity, (ii) kinematic, (iii) turn-intent prediction, and (iv) connectivity. Different parameters representing network complexity and positioning quality are used to assign the relative importance to different weight scores by employing an adaptive regression method. To demonstrate the transferability of the developed algorithm, it was tested by using 5,830 GPS positioning points collected in Nottingham, UK and 7,414 GPS positioning points collected in Mumbai and Pune, India. The developed algorithm, using stand-alone GPS position fixes, identifies the correct links 96.1% (for the Nottingham data) and 98.4% (for the Mumbai-Pune data) of the time. In terms of the correct lane identification, the algorithm was found to provide the accurate matching for 84% (Nottingham) and 79% (Mumbai-Pune) of the fixes obtained by stand-alone GPS. Using the same methodology adopted in this study, the accuracy of the lane identification could further be enhanced if the localization data from additional sensors (e.g. gyroscope) are utilized. ITS industry and vehicle manufacturers can implement this D2D map-matching algorithm for liability critical and in-vehicle information systems and services such as advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS)
